Sun during the day says southern primary exposure. Because the angle varies from summer to winter, an overhang can be sized to shadow the windows during the summer months. Something exterior could help.

Not Austin but Chicago area, our big west-facing living room bow window had us closing the curtains in the middle of the day until the sun went down, in summer. And the east-facing dining room had me concerned about the furniture.

We had film applied, like Lina. It was a 3M product. The east window had just the UV-blocking protection. The west window had UV protection and heat-limiting protection. It worked great! I would say the light, while not darker, and not obscured, was not as bright and glaring, it was just different, in a good way. We were finally able to have a cooler house in summer and enjoy the room and light. In winter, it was not as warm from the brief sun, but it was a just fine trade-off. Highly recommend.

This won’t be popular, but in the west upstairs bedrooms, we put in vertical blinds. They can’t be beat for that kind of light control. Horizontal blinds in the east bedrooms were fine, but the verticals worked best on the west side.

To cut the sun but not the view use SOLAR SHADES. They can be order at numerous on line vendor or HD, Lowes or JC Penney.
