Entertainment Center in Awkward Space

Hello! I am hoping you can help me design an entertainment center around the TV for this awkward space in the family room. There is a small closet (it is under the stairs) that can be removed. We have thought about a built in. If we do that, would we go wood or white? The mantel is wood, the kitchen in the adjoining room is white. We have considered buying a console and building bookshelves around it. The couch is in the opposite corner so we would need the TV to sit at a slight angle or be on a swivel. Any and all ideas are so welcome!
Thank you.

The easy answer is wall mount the TV on an articulating arm lower it a bit and if you need a cabinet that is all that will fit on that wall the cabinet needs to be wider than the TV and for sure no room for bookshelves. You say FR do you have a LR space ? I think if at all possible that TV should go elsewhere That space is full

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your input. I agree the space is full. If the mantel were lower I would probably put the TV over the mantel. Or there’s the option to put it on a console in the opposite corner by the windows, but that doesn’t leave much room for a couch. We have a large family so the big couch is nice. This family room layout has bugged me for 20 years! 😆

I would move the sectional more or less in front of the TV and then figure out if I needed to deal with the open space to the right of the fireplace. Such as an easy chair or a game table or a large plant, etc.

If the necessary wiring can be installed over your mantel (inside the chimney), you can install an articulating arm that would allow you to lower the television down over the mantel for viewing, and then return it to where the mirror currently is (when you're not using the TV). That's a big IF, but it's worth considering.

Thank you so much! These are great points. Would the easel go where the chest is or would I reconfigure the room and put it in the corner in front of the windows?

Way too much stuff jammed into this room. Give yourself some breathing space.

I'd like to see more wall in this room.

Do you need the cabinet for storage? If not, I would consider mounting the tv on an articulating arm in the corner and then adding a triangular shaped corner shelf under it. You'd have to remove the closet doors and patch and paint the opening.

    Good advice already —

I’d be tempted to get a frame tv and hang it vertically on an arm that enables you to pull it out and rotate to horizontal for viewing - I wouldnt add more furniture to room, I’d be looking to simplify/remove items

    I vote corner cabinet.

Wish I could see the other end of the room. This is when a detailed floor plan comes in handy - can you provide both plan and photo, please? Initially, there are some things weighing your room down. . the coffee table might better serve if it was replaced with an ottoman + tray. 2. All of the items on the floor and surrounding the fireplace. 3. The track lights focusing on ?.? 4. Put large painting instead of mirror over the fireplace.

Wouldn't you have to put the fire out with the TV lowered in front of it on a bracket? Seems impractical with the seating right there.

Might be worth it to get a tabletop TV stand that lets you rotate the TV with the current setup.

Can you angle the cabinet you have to face the couch?

If you ready to consider a big change, think about moving the doorway to where the tv currently is. You've put up with an awkward arrangement for 20 years. This big change would make the whole room more livable.

I need to see the whole room maybe new eyes can help with something else . A space has 4 wall we need to see them all to have any idea of how to actually help/

It would be nice to see the whole room and know the measurements, but here is what I am thinking

A corner built in, very simple, that provides a shelf that is centered on the corner that the TV sits on

Sorry, I am not the best at drawing things with perspective, but this is my attempt to illustrate what I am saying

Get rid of the track lighting that isn't lighting anything worth lighting

The wall where you are standing. One pic shows a throw. Is that a chair it's on? Why not swing the couch around put the TV to the right of the fireplace-yes in front of a window. It appears you keep to closed anyway and you have the one above for light.

Can you post a floor plan of the room showing dimensions including doors, windows, fireplace, other entrance to the room, etc. It will help all of us determine if there are other possibilities. Also, it looks like the TV is too wide to fit on the wall next to the french doors and the other wall under the tracklight. On the tracklight wall, what is that low white door we see?

Corner wood armoire type cabinet so it looks more decorative and balances the space rather than the hutch type cabinet you have currently. You do have a lot in the room, but with no other options for the TV you do what you have to do.

All kinds of room contortions to accommodate the huge TV. I'll add one suggestion: Get a smaller TV!

A question: What is that small white panel/door to the left of the TV console? If no access is needed then get a corner cabinet as Jennifer Hogan and Holly suggest and articulated arm for a smaller TV.

Separate issues that also make room too crowded. Too many rectangles: doorways, fireplace, art work, TV, mirror. Wrong proportions: TV screen, TV console; too big coffee table, too much stuff to look at: ottomans, cushions, throws,

Consider subtracting and/or scaling down some items in this small space: Get a small, round nesting coffee table to tuck into the sectional. That coffee table, though attractive, is way too big for the space.

Rectangular nesting coffee table might suit your sectional than a round one since your "L" section is short:

Paint the built in cabinet the wall color so it blends in. Dog pic is too large for the wall space. Cabinet is really large for the room. Wall mounted tv w swivel would
give some breathing room, if that’s possible. It looks like a cozy family room. If your family is like mine was, everyone piles in together on that couch!

One very important thing you need to do is to paint the black french door in white or strip to natural wood - black was only a temporary trendy color while some crazy people could not come up with good ideas. Black should never be used in a home except for pot handles in the kitchen or other such minor details. Also the black around the fire place clashes with the nice warm colors of the stones. UGH! There are other issues besides the entertainment center. The grey walls are UGLY. Otherwise not too bad a room. Buy a smaller TV - that could help also.

It looks like the tv is already angled in a corner Maybe get a smaller tv and angle it i more? The cabinet is too large. Get a smaller coffee table I like the round one shown in another comment. Get rid of the mirror and hang the dog painting over the mantel if you love it It would unclutter that wall Paint the black door white and paint the black fireplace trim a color that blends with the stones. Glad to see a cozy family space instead of a white sterile space youd never let the kids in

It's a nice room, I would relocate the TV above the mantle, and paint the french doors white, remove the cabinet and track lighting, replace the the coffee table with a 36" or less round one, and repaint the wall finish to a lighter shade like sand, or a cotton white, which would invite darker and more colorful objects into the space, along with the shade of the flooring, ceiling, tv and ceiling light fixture, overall the room space is great and nice to look at!

So many helpful comments here - thank you so much! I was traveling the last week and wasn’t able to get back to everyone but I reeeally appreciate you taking the time to help! I’ll post a picture of the space on the other side (kitchen) and a floor plan by the end of the day. Thank you soo much! I’ll also try to make a few of these changes and see how it looks and post. Thank you!

If only the sectional were a reversed L--would allow you to put the TV and console against the wall to the right of the fireplace--then you could watch the TV from the kitchen. Block the window behind the TV with a folding screen or something.

For whataever reason we cannot see the rest of the space so done I guess.
