Rug advice...I'm completely thrown with this green couch

I got this rug(first picture) and the more I look at it, the more it's not my vibe. I'm into midcentury modern, love moody colors, warmth, earth tones, boho, nature etc. and this rug just doesn't hit any of those things. Thoughts on this rug instead? I will figure out wall paint from there. I'm definitely not keeping it this cold gray.

Cheerful looking and it goes well with the colors of your sofa and pillows.

I think you would like it better if the walls were a darker green.

I think this suits your description very well. I have one very similar to it and love the way it looks in my guest room.

Go moody with this sofa. Paint the walls green

I don't like your sofa with that first rug. It just looks too muddy and doesn't seem to have any green in it to tie back to the sofa. Return and keep looking.

Agreed! Thoughts on second one that I like for a more midecentury modern vibe?

I like a rug with a bit less contrast against the couch such as what Jan suggested

On a recent post, you were considering dark walls. Are you still considering dark walls? Right now you’re showing light walls, so any suggestions will be based on that. Please don’t approach this step by step—present the full concept at, and treat the rug selection as part of the overall design.

MCM is highly successful with MOODY,,,but it should come from your case pieces and your art, your lighting..NOT from the rug..., perhaps??

All the rugs you favor? Are not the mood you claim to want..

    More tonal, less jarring

I’m sorry. I’m not a pro. 🙂 But, I did have quite a few pros chime in on various platforms that wall color should be picked last. The rug before was darker and a different style so I thought maybe a dark moody color(which i do love dark and moody) but I figured out that I think it’s the rug that I’m not settled on. So, I went and looked for rugs that fit what my style better. I love this MCM looking one…so now I will be going back to the drawing board on wall color.

I like all sorts of styles! MCM, moody, boho, nature rustic. I’m just trying to see what works best in my space.

I like the second rug you pictured Even with dark walls it adds excitement to an otherwise dark space. I’ve never thought of MCM as moody. When I think MCM I think of the Jetson’s (TV show). The dark moody seems more late 1950’s.

The 'moody' came from all the cigarette smoke in the rooms!

    Haha!

Are you keeping the current wall to wall carpet?

It's not just the green couch, it's the bloody gray walls limiting your choices. Can you repaint the walls an ivory white so you're not limited by the gray as well as the green. You need to look for a rug that has green and gold tones like the one you show to echo the flooring (please show a closeup since flooring is your 4th wall) and what looks like a gold finish wood console. Please show all four sides of the entire space.

    This rug is from Wayfair.

Yes, unfortunately I have to for now due to budget. I also have young kiddos who play in this basement so I will likely replace it once they are older and less accident prone. The area rug was my attempt at a refresh without new carpeting. We are also missing carpeting under the tv stand/electric fireplace, because there was a large fake fireplace that was very odd there that we took out so now we are missing carpeting in that spot.

1st pic - I agree that this is not the right rug. If you are keeping the carpet that is under this rug I would get a larger rug that runs closer to the tv wall (hides the stain and goes under the leg of the furniture on the right.)

If you are keeping the rug that is underneath the area rug, the area rug needs to work with the color. The current carpet has too much violet browns for the gold. (Too much violet brown with the wood furniture as well.)

The second picture - I love that carpet. I love MCM. But I have a few concerns. The pattern may be too bold with the sofa and the light tan will be hard to keep clean as it looks like a major traffic pattern through the middle of the room.

I like a few that are not MCM or the popular muted worn look

Last one is my favorite - All pulled from Rugs Direct.

Thank you! Very helpful! Yes, the fact that it didnt reach beyond the tv stand is definitely a no(even as a noob I know that 😅)! And, yes I feel like it just doesn’t quite fit color-wise. I’m in love with the MCM rug though! I’m way more inspired by it. It’s also fun and not too serious which is nice for my kids who still play dolls and games down here. I can see your concerns. It’s one of those washable rugs and we don’t wear shoes in the house, so maybe that will help. But, it’s in the back of my mind about it getting dirty easily 😕.

This is the tv wall...we are getting a larger tv and will be hiding all wire FYI. This fireplace stand is new. Also, the decor on there is not at all staying. I just set things there until I decorate it.

Wall to wall carpet color...cannot replace at this time so must be mostly covered by area rug.

Shoe wall coming in off garage(door will be painted please don't judge). I also have a tall wood mcm looking shoe shelf picked out that will go in between sconces....all racks and bench will be gone.

hall to the right of shoe wall where you walk in from the garage. It's a tight squeeze hall and you step down a bit to walk that way. The stairs to go up are here. Laundry room to the left with a curtain that will absolutely be changed. Wall art must stay as it's my husband's photography.

I would waste money on NO rug. They crawl mercilessly on wall to wall carpet. Not one thing will keep it in place.

I would do that if I could, but I'm missing a chunk of carpeting under the tv stand where we took out an old odd looking faking fireplace...so I need an area rug to cover it. Replacing carpeting is not an option at this time.

Shoe shelf I like for shoe wall...and looking for a new bench to go next to it.

    For anyone following this thread:

--Post photos of all FOUR sides of a space, INCLUDING THE FLOORING, ANY BUILT-INS, OR ITEMS THAT MUST STAY. Pros look at a space holstically, not just one feature. People posting a Design Dilemma must take into account the entire space, too. For pros on Houzz, there's no such thing as one problem, with one solution. Sometimes the solution is to paint walls and not buy a new rug. Sometimes a change in layout is a solution. There are many ways to solve a problem when it comes to design. But the big picture of all the "givens" is most important to show.

--State how the room is used--had no idea this was a basement.

--Had no idea the space had wall to wall carpeting. I thought it was some kind of wood with gold finish, so forget my rug suggestions for a palette. Why not get great art in a style you like iinstead of an area rug ? Kids will enjoy playing on existing carpeting.

This is one of those threads where OP dropped info piece by piece. Next time, do it all at the beginning.

Yikes! Most people wouldnt know to post all of that. I don’t know(nor do most people on here asking for advice) the inner workings of how home interior pros do things. I had no clue I had to provide so many details to whether you think rug one looks better than the other. sheesh 🙄

Houzz should definitely tell people how to post, but most of it is common sense. Most of us thought this was a living room, not a basement. That was pretty basic information.

This is kind of a no-brainer.

Basement play room for the kids

Area Rug that you have fallen in love with.

It doesn't have to be the perfectly designed space - it needs to be a room that you and your kids enjoy being in.

    Buy it and be done.

Based on what you lean towards, hope the rug and paint colors below help to narrow down your actual preference - that‘s the biggest decision at this point and given room’s usage, suggest going darker.

I’d work with the carpeting‘s color to create a smoother transition. Cushions will also help to pull the room together.

    Moody:

    Boho:

    Natural/rustic:
