Please help me confirm if they go together

last month
last modified: last month

Need help to decide if the sideboard/buffet cabinet and the dining table go together. Thank you so much for any input!

The dining table is 96x40. The buffet is 46" wide and 44" high. The room is 172x134. The window is on the top 134" wall in the drawing.

No. The cabinet's legs are thin and spindly when compared to the huge thick legs of the table. The table also overwhelms the chairs.

I don’t think so. Are you trying to match them? I think the buffet might look better in another finish & perhaps longer? A lot longer, & maybe a little lower. What are the dimensions? Agree with apple pie’s comment regarding the chairs.

No, the scale is off. It's too small but if you go longer, it will be a squeeze to get to the chairs when people are sitting on that side of the table. We don't have photos of the rest of the space and normally, I don't like to block a window but in this case, I'd consider a piece that can be placed to fit on the window wall. You could even butt two pieces together if you can't find a long one.

@apple_pie_order Thank you! I didn't think of this detail. My main concern was the color difference. The chairs are the old chairs and I am looking for new chairs. But one thing I like those chairs is the back which makes those chair not that bulky.

@JT7abcz Thank you! I think another option is to put the buffet on the bottom wall in the drawing to avoid putting it in front of the window. If I do that, I can only fit 6 chairs instead of 8 and I will have some extra space behind the chairs. This is why I thought the arrangement in the picture utilizes the space better.

    Suggestion:

--Can you look for a buffet height but shallow depth sideboard instead in a light warm finish like your floors? The room seems cold with the many black, smooth, angular surfaces. Also proportion is off with the cabinet.

--The tall back chairs take up a lot of visual space. Consider lower backed chairs but with black legs. Do you have room elsewhere to put some of the chairs unless you need 8 chairs regularly.

I think the table and buffet look fabulous together. They both have a modern style and they share the same color.

I thought I read on Houz that when mixing furniture, you need only 2 shared elements.

I do like the upholstered chairs to soften it up a bit. The carpet softens also.

I do like the upholstered chairs

Your dining table should be centered on your window, and that cannot happen if you place that cabinet on that wall.

My general rule about wood finish items in the same room is that if they do not complement or match then they should contrast. This is a near miss.

I prefer that wood finishes not all match, more interesting & ”depth”? if they don’t. I agree with Beverly , they should compliment or contrast if mixing.

I would usually choose a longer lower cabinet in DR and maybe not so matchy . So a buffet type cabinet . and maybe with glass doors but not trying to match and miss

@lisedv Thank you so much for the design! That looks much better. I am just afraid of using any carpet in my house because I saw how much dirt a carpet could hide once.

@housegal200 We only have 3 people living in the house at everyday basis. We just like bigger table because it also serves as my son's study table and we sit all together at the table when he studies. We also prefer to have possibility to fit more people just in case we need to.

@Cheryl C Thank you! They are actually not the same color. The dining table is black, and the buffet is black brown with some black edging and base.

@BeverlyFLADeziner Thank you so much for the drawing! From the interior design point of view, is it that important to place the dining table center to the window? Is it a must?

Is your ceiling electrical outlet centered in the ceiling? I'm guessing it is.

That's the way contractors build houses with electrical outlets in the center of rooms. You don't want to slide the table off center then it won't line up with the window or the ceiling light fixture.

Sometimes contactors build the dining room to accommodate a side board on one of the walls. Then they bump out the wall of the dining room to accommodate that piece of furniture but the light fixtures are still centered over the table.

Here are examples of how the table is centered on the window and centered under the light fixture. This might be easier if you posted images of your room.

@BeverlyFLADeziner We have room to place the ceiling light in different aeras because we thought about different opportunities when we redid the electricity.

@K Laurence @Patricia Colwell Consulting @BeverlyFLADeziner I got what you are saying by miss match. Would you please give me some examples regarding a good compliment or contrast? Thanks a lot!

Meh. They "go" together in terms of color, but I think you can do a lot better on the sideboard, you need something more interesting.

@porkchop_z5b_MI How about after I add some interesting decor? I feel this room is not big, so I‘d better keep the furniture simple. Is that right?

We really need to see the room.

Why are you hesitating to place a sideboard or bar cabinet on the end wall of the dining room?

You realy need the space on either side of the table to allow chairs to be added to the table.

All of these are contrasting sideboards that would work with your dining table.

^^ Oh, I love the green "peacock" one Beverly posted. Now that's what I'm talking about when I say interesting. Easy color to work with in terms of pulling in decor to tie it all together.

I think something like this might be better suited to the space.

@BeverlyFLADeziner If we follow the 36” rule for the space around the dining table, I can’t put any chairs on the shorter sides of the table. 172-96-36-36=4. I can only use smaller dining chairs if i want to have 8 chairs. But the shorter side of the room is 134”, so we have room for a 22” deep buffet there since 134-40-36-36=22.

Any more suggestions regarding where the best position to put the buffet is? Thanks

I'm not even going to ask how you ended up with a non-expandable table in this room.

OK, so here is how I would handle the space. I'm assuming your dining table doesn't have a leaf installed, because if it did that is where we would steal the added space needed.

If there is not a leaf I would set the table up wtihout the end chairs at the table. Instead I would place them on either side of the sideboard and then just place them at the table when required.

If you purchase a reasonable size sideboard for that 134" wall you should have space at either end of the buffet to keep the chairs until required.

it's not unusual to have a dining table with no chairs at the ends unless in use.
