Need Help Furnishing Sunroom/Foyer!

last month

This is our charming, but tiny (9’x9’), sunroom which also serves as the foyer. Would love to make it a sitting room but not sure if there’s enough space. The main entry to our house is the door on the right, which is used frequently. The door on the left is not used frequently as it leads to a small balcony. In addition, there is a wide opening into the living room. Any ideas how to make this a cozy, inviting, yet functional space?

I’m sure you’ll get plenty of help. I just wanted to say I love the brick floor!

Drapes on the windows; more upholstered furniture; a rug that covers most of the floor. Those would all make the room feel warmer and look cozier.

What type of climate are you in? A cold weather climate where visitors come in with coats and boots that need to be kept until they leave? Or a warmer climate where people just use the front door to come in and enter into the house with no need to hang coats or drop shoes?

We are in a four seasons climate (northeast coast) and we are just a few short blocks from the ocean.

you've got a couple of great pieces to use, drape the windows for light control and privacy, and get a larger area rug to fill the space.

Since you seldom use the opposite door a shelf on the solid wall and your bench there.

The chaise and another upholstered piece in a neutral color.

if drapery, hang the rod high, just under the ceiling. layer with blinds for your coastal vibe.

... WallPaper the ceiling with clouds or paint it a blue of the sky...

you've got a great space, have fun!

I would do inside mount roman shades so not to hide the lovely window trim. A 5x7 rug across the back part of the area. A small scale sofa under the 3 windows and a small scale swivel chair angled near the door you don't use often. Table with a lamp beside the sofa and a very small table near the swivel chair for a drink & book. IMO open drapes in a 9x9 space will take up visual space.

love the floor. I like the idea of woven wood or bamboo shades.

what about some built in seating under the windows?

or, something like this cozy shelf for books, a comfy sofa, some greenery

I like this idea too if you have a view

a nice rug of some sort will warm it up too

The room is likely to be quite comfortable in spring and fall in the Northeast coast area. In winter, the room will get a blast of cold air every time the front door is opened. The bench is clearly in use for taking off shoes.

Consider adding a window seat and a wicker rocking chair or a pair of wicker rocking chairs. Add a table, lamp, and a couple of warm throws for cooler days.

    Good ideas so far...

I would cozy up by using frosted bulbs in the ceiling fixture to eliminate the shadow patterns....in a lower wattage, and use table or floors lamps for any extra lighting.

Paint the ceiling the same color as the walls.

    I agree no drapes...Roman Shades.

    Some plants.

What tracefloyd said…. your windows are too nice to hide with drapes. Like jck910’s ideas also.
