last month

Looking to see if anyone has a color match formula for Merillat Cotton or KraftMaid White Dove in BM advance paint

i ordered a quart of paint from Merillat, but it doesnt match at all it looks like it’s not tinted at all

I am also working with a local BM paint store to get a match I‘m on attempt #9. I also contacted BM corp to see if they have a formula but they do not.

Thanks

I have had good luck with BM (a larger store) Are they matching off an actual cab door?

Not exactly sure if I undestand this but you take a door to the paint store to get color match and honestly it might never be exact . If you are trying to match anew cabinet with an old one the match proably will not be perfect since the old cabinet has been living in the space for a while too. Waht are you trying to color match that might be helpful to know

    Thank you for your responses.

@la_la Girl - Yes, I've taken the door to a larger BM paint store.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - It's not even a close match much less exact. As for old vs new, the new cabinets match the older cabinets exactly so that's not the issue.

Depending on the paint, it can keep it's color for quite some time. I have touched up cabinets I painted with Advance custom white in another house seven years later with new paint and it matches. At the same time, my friend used a SW cabinet paint and it has yellowed.

We have constructed a vent hood that needs to match along with trim and crown molding above the upper cabinets that I would like to match as closely as possible without it sticking out like a sore thumb.

@la_la Girl - Yes, I have taken a door to be color matched to our BM store.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - I would hope the match would be close, but in this instance it's not close at all.

We remodeled our kitchen layout. In doing so, we installed new Merillat cotton cabinets and they match perfectly with 7 yr old Merillat cotton cabinets, so that is not the issue.

In the remodel, we have extended the cabinets to the ceiling by adding an unpainted filler along with crown and have made a vent hood. I want to match the color so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

I have painted a prior kitchen w/ BM Advance paint did not have trouble with the color changing over 7 years when I went to retouch. I did have a friend use a SW for her cabinets and it did yellow pretty quickly so paint can change color depending on the formula.

Can I ask how things are changing from attempt 1 through 9?

Is the store re-reading the sample and getting the same results

or did they just read the first time and are bumping the numbers around to try to match?

What is wrong with the match - too gray, too colorful, too white?

I did find with my own painting project that BM Advance was whiter than the BM Regal Select using the exact same color formula in both paints - I didn't care as the Regal Select was being used only on the inside of the closet, but it is not as white as the trim.

The other thing that can impact how it appears is the texture. Smoother surfaces reflect light differently than rougher surfaces - so the same color can appear lighter or darker when they are actually the same.

Do you own a color muse? They are not perfectly accurate, but it can evaluate two samples and get the delta variance even if they are not reading the color perfectly - both will have the same defect.

If I had tried the same store 9 times I might look for another store. We have a BM store in town and an Ace Hardware that sells BM paint. The one woman who works at Ace is so much more talented than any of the other people at either store. If she isn't in and I have a tough matching issue I go back again later when she is in.

It could also be that their matching machine hasn't been calibrated for a while or one of their colorants is a bit off.

^ good point on the people or equipment issue -

in my experience they should be able to get a dead on match
