Have a home office and need to choose the right paint!

last month

Hi Friends, just moved and have a home office to paint and decorate. I love a light blue ceiling, and want to have the doors to match or maybe a shade darker. We are still in boxes but I must get this done so I can function and get work done! The Office also flows into the kitchen so the color of the walls will be the same as the kitchen. and I wonder if I shoud paint the door in kitchen the same color as the office ? HELP!!!1

I think you need to specify where the office is going. That looks like a massive space for an office ( if it is down those steps ) - that seems more like a dining/ living room combination. Or are you talking about the landing area on the left? And what doors are you talking about? The ones to outside or cabinet doors? Maybe it's just me - I am not seeing your vision.

Select the area rug first. That will guide you on what shade of blue to select.

Not sure where you plan to place the office as the space above looks to be the dining area. Not sure how you plan to stop the blue on the ceiling. Sometimes concepts like this work better when the home is less open concpt.

Are you painting the office blue because you like the color, or have a rug and accessories you want to compliment? Don’t suggest painting any doors blue, or you’ll have to paint all the doors (unless it‘s the cupboard door in the office).

Will blue suit the kitchen’s flooring/counter/backsplash? Choose a shade that is complementary and even continue it into what looks your LR/DR? is that the office?

Look on line for blue home office combinations that resonate/suit your furniture, style, etc. Painting the ceiling can be fun. When you’ve narrowed down some blues, be sure to test.

When I think of a home office/study with blue walls/ceilings/doors - I think of something like this:

A color drenched office = walls/ceilings/trim/built-ins/etc. It has it's own defined space that is separate from the rest of the home.

OR - if the room isn't color drenched, these are what I think about:

Your room looks really large. What else will the room be used for besides a home office? What does your office furniture look like? Do you already have an area rug? What else will be needed for your office (e.g., built-in storage)?

great questions! the office will be in a designated area by two large windows right off the foyer. This area will also be the small dining space, I will put a pub table there. I do have a rug with the blues that I like and the curtains will be light cream linen.

this is the space for the home office, the LR ceiling will also be blue, Misty blue by Benjamoin Moore. I was also thinking of wallpaper or board and batten.

whoa. are those two floors staying as is?

will that opening stay as is?

    the other wall?

what kind of office are we visualizing here? just a desk? in an area shared w/a pub table?

can you do a layout drawing?

Pub tables are usually a bad choice in a room with 8' ceilings. They appear to take up more room because the space between the top of the table and the ceiling is diminished.

The two tone flooring is not staying, the dark flooring will eventually be replaced, The opening will stay as is, we just downsized from 400k to 200k and my office will now be a part of the dining room. So I will have the corner by the windows and the dining area, pub style, will be a small part of it. :) .Also, I want to put a blue bookcase to the right of the french doors.

Also, I dont want to lean towards gray of any kind, I want soft blues and greens. I hope this helps, so you can help me...Pleaseeeee. LOL.

Given the open floor plan, I would’t paint the ceiling and doors. You can always re-asses after walls and the bookcase are done. Once impactful accessories are added, you’ll have impact, without it being too much.

There are important decor decisions and only when made, then decide on paint color as your renditions are quite different. Originally you mentioned blue a few times, so it may be easier to narrow down shades and test in the room.

Have you worked on a floor plan and measured where/what will work best? Consider having dining near the kitchen for convenience with table under the chandelier (hope you change your mind about a pub style table).

Have you considered having an actual wall installed to make an office "off" the kitchen?

I am not sure what the purpose of the pub table and its plaement is. I think that is a choppy idea that doesnt relate to the office space or the rest of that sunk down room.

Your photos are very limiting. Not only do we need one standing from each side of the space but in order to give you the best advice we really need a drawn out floorplan. It need not be fancy but window placement and door placement is important. Just draw something out and snap a photo of that and post it.

Before choosing paint colors I recommend you concentrate on room placement and set a plan in motion so that you don't have a poorly planned layout. Once you have that your paint colors can be chosen.

the dining area will be close to the office area, but I am ok with that, I dont stay in my office that often but I do need it none the less. I do like blue ceilings and will do that throughout the home. If I do the walls in a cream color and sky blue ceiling I like that too. its the shade of cream that has me stuck, and/or wall paper. I will not be removing walls or taking down walls, too much work for now.
