Bedroom Rug(s) Advice Needed

last modified: 27 days ago

I'd love to get advice on choosing one or two bedroom rugs. I have a queen bed, and I'm thinking of a large one that will go under the bed and provide soft footing on both sides and the back. I want to see the rug itself if I go this route. If you think that would work what size and shape (rectangle or square) would you buy. If you think that two smaller rugs, say 5x8, would work better, please let me know. Right now, I am looking for advice on size(s) and shape(s) only. (It will be wool, Persian or Moroccan in style, and something to go with my dark green bedroom. But those choices will come once I decide on one or two rugs and their sizes.)

Thanks so much for all your advice.

if you want exact advice, you'll have to post photos. have no idea how large your room is, where the bed sits, what else is in the room.

Wow, what a great article (among many fabulous ones!) you linked. Thank you so much, Lisedv! I am going to soak up some great wisdom this long weekend.

I'll do that, Beth, over the holiday weekend. Right now, it is a mess with seam coating and painting being done. Thankfully, that mess will soon be over. I'll come home tomorrow to a clean, dark green bedroom and move my stuff in for a long and luxurious weekend. (The cats will be most grateful too.)

I never understand the need for a big rug hidden under a bed , at best a piece of broadloom finished on all sides in a plain color since any pattern will compete with bedding and you do not see enough of the pattern to make sense. I like some nice rugs on either side of the bed for cozy feet and chosen after the bedding .

Everyone is different for sure - I will say my son’s allergies improved when we removed the rug from under his bed as it was hard to vacuum and keep dust free

Good points, Patricia and LaLaGirl. I don't have allergies but I do have cats so they add to the dust regularly. And it would certainly be less expensive (therefore, I could get a higher quality), and I could get two, one for each side of the bed. I'll begin looking and bookmarking. I'm in no rush. Thank you all so much!

I used to have a large rug under my king sized bed. I gave it up for 2 3x5 washables with rug pads. So much easier to pick up and throw in the wash, especially with pets.

“Soft footing on both sides and the back” - assume you mean at the foot of the bed? All depends on the size of the room, and where the bed is placed. I would go with a 9 x 12 or larger, so you can really see the rug. But traffic patterns are also important. You don’t want to walk through the door into the room or the door into the bathroom, and have one foot on the rug, and the other on the floor. We had to go with a 10 x 14 in our bedroom to avoid that issue!

You’ll also have many more choices if you go with a standard size rectangular rug, instead of a square rug!

Update: I ended up choosing the last rug shown here. I have decided to go dark in paint, lamps, rug and to a slightly lesser extent because it is emerald, with the comforter. There is dark wood vintage furniture which is all leggy rather than heavy. And strong white accents plus the window and the mirrored closet doors that reflect the window. It's a beautiful combination of light and dark

    I'm not seeing any pictures?

Editing my answer. The rug is unavailale. It was one of their "one of a kind" rugs so there is no chance of replacing it. I still have the one above it bookmarked but my heart isn't really in it so I probably will not order it. And while I have looked at similar rugs there I have seen nothing I liked. Pictures will still be coming soon.
