BUTLER'S PANTRY KIND-OF

last modified: 2 months ago

There is an 11' hallway between the front of my brownstone house and the newly extended transitional kitchen. I'm going to build a wall of storage with counterheight in the center (see the plan), for storage and to make good use of the space. Will keep folding tables and chairs in that storage, plus lots of other things. Would like to build the same cabinetry as you see in the kitchen, same style and color, but wondering what can be tweaked so it doesn't really look so "kitchen"y. Your advice? Thanks!

This is the 11' hallway that leads into the huge kitchen:

This wall with all the stuff, is where the new storage will be built.

This is the kitchen cabinetry. BM Balboa Mist color. Antique gold hardware.

The storage wall. The dotted lines indicate the interior shelves:

Are you continuing the kitchen flooring into the hall? I wonder why you didn’t just continue the wood floors you have and then sand and stain all to match? That aside, I would not match the kitchen cabinet white since this is a separate area (and matching it will look too ‘kitcheny’). Starting with your floor finish there, I’d suggest a dark tone, a wood stain or a color for the cabinets. The counter there could be wood stained to match the floors.

Why no drawers to maximize storage?

I added drawers to most of the built-ins I designed for my hallways.

    Dear Thinkdesignlive,

All the flooring in the house is what you see in the hallway. The added kitchen got its own floor, I wanted something light colored, but you have a great point, thank you!

    Dear Chispa,

I don't really need drawers, for my purpose. What do u think about the same cabinets as in the kitchen, for this space?

I don't really like BM Balboa Mist as a color, so I'm probably not the right person to answer the question!

Is that wood-look tile in the kitchen?

Looking down the hallway and seeing the same color cabinets sitting on different color flooring would really bother me.

Why not get the same cabinets but in a different color?

This is the third time you have posted the same question, and the fourth time on the topic of storage in this hallway. Has something about the situation changed since you last posted about it?

It might be easier to revive old threads instead of posting new ones so you don't have to rehash the same information about the finishes in all of the continuous rooms.

Ok, I'll go there. I don't know what kind of panties my butler wears!

I‘m glad you have that typo in your heading... I am much happier to respond to ”BUTLER’S PANTY KIND-OF“ than I would be to respond to ’BUTLER’S PANTRY KIND-OF’... ( especially in light of the fact that it’s mostly always ”kind-of” as there are usually no butlers involved. :)

I’m probably going to be pretty useless to you, in any case, though- because when I think of Brooklyn Brownstone hallway built-in cabinetry- I only think of this:

    Dear freedomplace,

Ha, and thank you! About the color - most of the brownstone has the original gorgeous detailed woodwork, but I just can't put a dark color into that small hallway, it'll drag me down, i need light colors around me....

Paint them the same color as the walls in the hallway. It really is too much with two different floors, two different cabinet colors, and multiple wall colors in one view.

Like I said before pick a color you like - not the same white as the kitchen. The last photo that Freedom Place posted looks great IMO - and by doing something dramatic (either all wood to match the floors or a color you like) is that it sets up the transition from ‘hall’ to ‘kitchen’ in terms of experience and flow. It will make your kitchen feel even more bright and lively as it contrasts from the hall. A lot of designer speak and sum up to say that matching your kitchen is really really really not the way to go here.

PS the hallway color is not the right call either. It needs to read deliberately unique from the kitchen.

Here are some coordinating colors for Balboa Mist and a video of the deeper brown. It would be lovely…. https://www.tiktok.com/@westofmain/video/7339965752847502597

Not a pro ... but to me where you are building storage is not part of the kitchen, so I would make it part of the hallway and paint it the same color.

Agree with doods. The storage idea is perfect. An unused alcove adjacent to the kitchen will make an ideal pantry. But since it is in the hallway, treat it and design the outside/doors and surface as part of the hallway.

Thank you all, so much, for your input! There's one factor that—although it's not a 'design' one— I can't ignore it: I just can't do dark colors. My house has a lot of the original stunning cherrywood and I do love it all, but when I added the kitchen I just HAD TO lighten things up for myself, and am feeling the same way about this narrow hallway. It's either right for the house, or right for me! Dark drags me down terribly.

If you painted your storage area the same as the hallway it wouldn't be dark.

    Dear Doods,

Thanks, but since the Balboa Mist of the kitchen cabinets and the BM Classic Grey of the hallway wall = are quite similar, both 'say' white - wouldn't it still look too much like 'kitchen' in the hallway? Also, am wondering if the hardware should be different from the kitchen....

Not in my opinion to me it just becomes hallway, and yes I would think hardware should be different from kitchen. I would want the hardware to be low key to blend as much as possible with the cabinetry, maybe even painted wood in the same color, in other words downplay that area so your kitchen remains the focus.

I see your closet door in the hallway is painted white. Match that white and use similar black hardware. If the kitchen countertop looks good with the hallway white, use that for the surface. . Honestly, if you love the kitchen color, bring it into the hallway and paint the rest of the hallway trim the cabinet color. either way will be a great improvement to your current storage needs.

    " It drags you down"

"You don't want it look like the kitchen"

In white? Iwill look exactly as the kitchen. It will be pantry, versus Butler Pantry

It's a walk through space, too fast to drag you anywhere, just my guess. : )?

Just a shorter version, below.......Flooring, contiguous, wall color contiguous, cabinetry Hale Navy, and hardware same as kitchen and same counter top as well.

All that was needed to delineate from kitchen? Make a transition was the cabinet color..... and prints on the opposite wall. You live in the kitchen, not the storage and serve place.

The dining room used to be a neglected always..living room.

The butler is shared with laundry on picture wall and was the former dining room....way too small.

In my opinion I would build it like a closet and not with cabints and countertop but rather doors and an extension of the existing closet like door in the area already.

Totally get your preference for lighter colors - I’d be tempted to do something interesting

Ok... This: "Would like to build the same cabinetry as you see in the kitchen, same style and color"

    and this plan:

With it all being right next to the kitchen door with a full line of cabinet in the kitchen there... it's going to look like an extension of the kitchen. A tweak isn't going to change that. You want to put your kitchen cabinets in your hall, it is going to look like that.

Maybe build in with something completely different in a light wood. Complement the kitchen instead of using more of it in the hall. Or perhaps something with frosted window doors that can have interior lighting that would look very different than the kitchen. If you like art or something a bit unusual, you could have a wall of sliding panels in something lovely instead of using cabinet doors.

I also like the color la la posted. It’s fresh and a color color! Just don’t do the kitchen color or hall color please. It’s your home but if you do something like the kitchen it will honestly drag the kitchen down. I also like what Jan posted as an example but that may be too dark for you.

IMO if all seen together you already have a different floor so no different cabinet style IMO maybe hang some art in this passgae too. instead of the gallery wall The next time you have a dilemma keep it to one post please.

IMO, what makes it look "kitchen-y" is the base cabinet with wall cabinet over it. I think it would look better as all floor to ceiling doors. You can put a combination of adjustable shelves and slide out trays. Maybe doing something in a micro shaker would keep it coordinated with the kitchen but still a bit different.
