Honey oak floors + charcoal sectional — rug and curtain color help

Hi everyone, I’m struggling with undertones in my living room and would really appreciate some guidance.Taupe curtains looked muddy and a cream/charcoal rug felt too cool. Should I lean warmer or cooler with rug and curtains? Going for cozy but modern. Also i added a pic of the new end tables i am getting.

    your curtains look gray.

where is the rug? take a few more photos of the room and include the furniture that you must keep/use in the space. Where is the TV and how many people live in the home?

Those curtains are temporary and i dont have a rug currently, that is the questions i am asking for help here with. The TV is on the opposite wall in the corner. I am keeping the couch. I added pics of the end tables i am getting.

When asking for free design help here you must give more information. Most posters give great free design help, but more information may be needed in order to help. I know you’re only asking for rug help, but what other colors do you have in the space, throughout your home, to make the room cohesive. You can get a ton of help, suggestions for free, then take what you need for your room from there. One picture of a room, does not help others

While yes the floors are a warm tone, I look at hardwood as a neutral.

    What color are the walls?

I also see the drapes as gray.

I think you should start with the rug. While I am a fan of monochromatic design, I am not when it comes to gray in a living room.

Try to find a rug that has some other color, plus a bit of gray. Curtains can then relate to a color in the rug.

What colors of you like? What other colors are in your home that flow from the living room?

Gray can pair with light blues, reds, burgundy, yellows.

You can also bring in color with throw pillows.

I just moved in. My other rooms are not set up yet, i am basing the colors off of what i am doing in the living room. i am buying all new furniture in every room and the colors will be different. i am having a hard time with the living room because of the color of the couch and floors.

Also, the furniture in the other rooms will be cream/beige so it wont be as hard to match. jusr struggling with this because of the dark couch. The curtains that are up are temporary, i do not want gray and am aware it doesnt go good

What's your style? What's your budget for a rug? You can definitely combine warm and cool colors. Are you planning on keeping the wall color? Something like this could work.

I would look for a rug with a pattern.

Got it. My favorite with your sofa would be blue.

This one has cream in it and you can do a cream textured drape. Print or floral pillows.

I personally don't like modern or abstract rugs, but maybe that is your thing.

Again, my is to bring in another colorbto bounce off. Then can add art, accessories and window treatment.

I do like that light blue color!! i do want more of a cozy feel and not so bright. not sure if i can have both… but would other color curtains work?

I know this is not for everyone but…,,I like simple 4-inch wood blinds and have them throughout my home.

There will be black lightning accents as well

You can certainly do a light blue. Go on all the websites. Check out Wayfair.

If you get a rug with light blue and cream in it, you can do cream drapes, but try to get them with a texture.

Then we can have fun with pillows.

I would definitely get a rug with a bit of colour to it. I like blues, greens and orange/yellow with grey. Not necessarily all in one. For drapes I would get the rug first and then build from that. What colour are Tue walls?

Or i kind of also like a sage green, would that look good? walls are accesible beige

I thon that could work. Not as the whole rug but a colour in it

Sage green and your sofa? No.

Blues and greens are pretty but they're both cool colors. You'll want to add in some warmth as well so you don't make the room feel to cold. This is a runner but give the idea of what I'm saying.

sage with the sofa, no. No to all the black accents, just looks like a lot of black dots everywhere. You wanted to warm it up, soften it up. Brushed nickel rods, lamps, hardware to warm it up and compliment your already gray feature piece of furniture.

Blues, yes, with a gray sofa. Hang drapery panels that are similar to your wall color, so not to be so jolting. Hang the rod just under the ceiling so it makes the room feel taller. Look for pinch pleated panels (they can be hung with hooks and rings, or just clip rings) rather than grommet, too casual.

Greens can absolutely go with charcoal. Get some throw cushions and experiment with colour a bit. All of us, me too, are just guessing somewhat

I agree about no black accents.

Can you post better pictures of the entire room from further back? At least show the entire wall.

You can make the color combination look intentional by using patterns with grey and warm colors (pillows, rugs) and spreading the grey and warm around the room.

Adding natural elements like baskets, plants or wood stools will also help bridge the warm and cool.

Charcoal is very neutral. And your floor is a medium toned wood floor that basically works with most anything.

I think that your existing end table works better with the floor than the one you are planning to bring in. So maybe consider saving money there. If you like sage green- by all means, find a sage green rug that you like. Maybe one that has sage and a bit of beige in it- and get some oatmeal/flax colored linen (or linen type) drapes. For the black accents- maybe a lamp or two with black shade(s). You could also add a bit of black in a pillow or two if you like.

I like the black base and shade shape on mockup above ^^.

Here are some more with sage rugs. Faux fur throws can be fun, too.

    ETA:

I think white or off-white drapes in a linen or linen type fabric could also be nice.

I'm with katinparadise--love those colorful patterned rugs! The others are a bit of a yawn.

Thanks @Diana Bier Interiors, LLC! I think a rug like that would be so pretty in this room. It brings all the different tones together and adds some life to an otherwise very neutral space. I hope OP comes back to see the suggestions offered.

Working with the gray sectional and the brown tones of the end tables, consider matching the end tables with the draperies and accent pillows on gray sofa. I like the gray rug and its texture show in this photo. I like the white walls, with a hint of gray undertone, possibly B.M. Distant Gray. What I don't like is the grouping on the wall. The art could be the focal point in the room

Wood floors are a neutral typically. It would be nice to see the color of the sofa/walls with more light - grays will have different undertones. I have a "gray" sofa (my SO would refer to it as gray) - however, it's a greige sofa and leans more beige or more gray depending on what else is in the room.

I know that your sofa isn't griege - but it might have an undertone that we need to see.

What exposure light comes through your window? N/S/E/W?

Im gonna do something like this. Let me know what you think

Or this. i think im liking this better feels more cozy.

Go for it! Post pictures as you go along doing the update

Yes to the warmer color curtains! Add pillows in prints that pull in all the tones. I would try to be sure your rug has all the colors as well. It makes it all feel more pulled together. It's going to be a lovely space.

Just a note that you will still need to judge color in the space. The AI-generated options above are very dark and very gray, not at all resembling the warm honey-toned colors in the photo originally provided. I would choose a rug by the actual wall color, not the sofa color.
