Flooring in a Small Powder Room--What's Your Opinion On Size & Type?

We have an ugly 3'x6' powder room that needs to be be completely redone. It may not be everyone's way of doing things, but we are starting with the flooring and working from there. We have Brazilian Teak hardwood floors leading up to the space:

Should we consider using that in the PR?

If we go with tile, would a 12"x12" work? I love this porcelain look:

We may use this in our laundry room which is just down the hall from the powder room. If we use tile, is this an appropriate size in such a small space?

Here are a couple of photos. Not much help, I know.

Show us the dimensions of the room.

I prefer a tile in bathroom spaces for disinfecting purposes. But it certainly can look lovely.

I prefer a powder room floor to be different from the other floors leading up to that room. It should feel like a private separate world. So yes, go for tile in there.

I love the 12" floor tile you show for your laundry room. Your powder room is too small for there to be much of a repeat of that pattern so for that reason, I'd not use it in the powder room.

For a space that small, consider a 3" x 3" checkerboard mosaic, or other mosaic, like this one from Fireclay.

(Available in many other colors too.)

I would use the 12" tile that you selected for the laundry room, but just use one of the two colors. It will still tie to the laundry room floor, but with a small room it will be less busy.

I know you want to start with the flooring, but you do realize that the toilet will need to be removed and usually the tile is continued under the vanity, so it will need to be removed.

If your not planning on placing the tile under the vanity you will need to know exactly where the new vanity will sit.

Not sure about the sizes but tiles in my opinion are much better

Well I understand the need to phase work but you really need to know the big picture. What is your plan for the vanity and the rest of the room? It’s good to understand context of the whole home in order to make your first decision but you also need the whole context of this room too. Are you confident you want to keep a vanity that goes all the way to the floor vs a furniture style? Are you confident your existing vanity footprint is ‘standard’ and will work with a new one?

I prefer a smaller scale tile for smaller spaces. And, since you are doing a checkerboard look in your laundry you could consider a small scale herringbone, basketweave, etc. But you really need to know what you are doing for the vanity top in order for it to coordinate. A local countertop fabricator should have a remnant you could buy and they may hold it for you for quite awhile if you put a deposit down. You should take your floor tile sample(s) with you when you go top hunting. Also, Bertch Bath makes decent cabinetry line that is offered with end fillers so you can get a custom look without going custom.

I also have a small 3’x9’ powder room. I used a 5” hexagon floor tile with matching blue grout. I think a solid look on a small floor looks best. This photo was when the floor was done and nothing had been reinstalled.

I would go for the wood floor since there aren’t steamy showers and bare feet coming in to this room. When the door is open, you have visual continuity from the rest of the house. But if that is off the table, keep the floor simple.

    More finished look.

Your choice of flooring is going to much, much larger than your choice of vanities. Consider selecting the vanity first and then the flooring, or at least shop for them simultaneously.

@RedRyder - I've seen so many pics of your wonderful powder room, but never the floor. It looks beautiful too!

I agree with a solid color in a small space like that. Smart to match the grout color as well.

.We definitely will be replacing the vanity and everything else in the room. The new vanity will not be going down to the floor. It will either be a pedestal or something that is wall-mountable. We will add flooring to all odf the 18 swuare feet

Ok so then the flooring can’t go in first as the vanity will need to be gone in order to do a new pedestal style vanity. You wouldn’t want to pay to reinstall your old vanity over the new floor so best to just do the whole room at once.

i will not have the old vanity reinstalled

Ok so let us know what vanity you are leaning towards and then we can help narrow down tile.

Either a floating vanity or something like this:

Since you want a furniture style you are best off going significantly smaller than what you have now. So if your existing is 36” wide you’d be looking at 30” wide. The room will need to be painted/wallpapered, etc before the new vanity goes in.

I know. I just need feedback on the flooring right now.

Need to know the vanity specifically. That one is obviously too wide for your space. When you find the vanity you actually can do/would like - it may have a top that is solid white or veined, etc. which will definitely impact the floor direction. What size are you going with specifically for the vanity? If you are set on that wood look I would caution you against a white oak look with your wood floors outside this room. I’d suggest a light walnut tone - something more like your wood floor tone. And, since you are leaning toward a wood vanity I’d suggest a tile floor - small scale. No checkerboard for sure. That is starting to narrow it down but again, to be specific on floor you will need to be specific on the vanity.

I would pick the floor first. There are so many great looking wall hung vanities now, you will find something that you love. I personally think floors are harder to decide on for small spaces.

What element will be “the star” of the room? Do you want a simple floor and vanity because there will be fabulous wallpaper? If that is your vision, go with simple tile-matching grout. If you want plainer walls, a colorful tile can really liven up the room. But there can’t be three attention-getters.

I also have a very small powder room 3.5 ft by 5.5ft. Mine has the same wood flooring as the adjacent hallway. I think a different flooring in there would only accentuate how small it is.

I think you should continue the Brazilian Teakwood into your powder room and use either a wall hung vanity or a pedestal sink.
