looking to update the front of home

Looking for ideas to update the front door to a contemporary wood door, similar for the garage door, recommendation for a new exterior brick paint color and update landscaping for a cohesive modern look. Would like to widen the driveway and expand to the right side of the house

Adorable house. You will get lots of suggestions.

I am going to work with the color of the driveway (which you could clean to make whiter):

Please upload some more photos showing the garage door (raised out of sight in current photo) and front door.

This is a traditional-looking house, not modern or contemporary. It could look more contemporary with a very large budget, but not by changing just the front door and the landscaping. Do you have some inspiration photos showing ideas you like for this house?

    What is your general location?

If you are in a warmer climate, then I would suggest you do a new driveway with pavers.

What is the staining on your driveway ... rust from well water?

I would not widen the driveway. Cement or asphalt is not a good look. If you want to expand the parking area, use grow-through pavers. To comment on the landscaping, we need a better picture of what's there now. I'm not sure why you want to paint it. It looks like the color scheme lots of people hoping to update for a "cohesive modern look" choose.

You have a contemporary garage door and front door in your ideabooks. Is that what you have in mind? I don't think they would suit your house, given that the roof line, railing and arches are traditional. Lovely house.

Thank you all for great suggestions so far. Would love to see some specific photos of front doors you would suggest. Maybe in wood but not too traditional

Your home as colonial bones. It is going to benefit most from a contemporary makeover that plays with color, contrasting color, and modern landscaping. Adding a contemporary front and garage door is not going make it look more contemporary. It will just look like you've randomly stuck on incongruous styles .

    * Use dark grey paint color so the body of your home is not as dark as your roof. Maybe Kendall Charcoal.

    * Remove your shutters.

    * Paint the garage door the same color as the body of the house, or do a solid wood garage door with square windows across.

    * Solid wood front door with no windows. Keep your current side windows. They will look contemporary when painted black. Squared, contemporary railings and a contemporary light will signal contemporary much more than installing a door like the ones in your idea book.

    * Consider lime green colors in your foliage and perennials so they pop against the house.

These three pictures are all the same house:

Thank you Kendrah. Love your suggestions and the paint color choice

That’s a nice looking home - I’d get a pro landscaping plan with some texture and drama and install it myself

Where can I get a digital pro landscaping design ?

  • last month

Landscaping designers will be local to you. Check your local area garden centers. A designer will come to your property, then design landscaping for your specific site. Usually you can self-install the plants or pay the center to install.

Removing that ”arch” over the left hand
side window would be a step towards modernization.

    A nice re-landscape & hardscape is what’s needed.

I see no colonial bones here but a mish mash of styles for sure. What ever door you get make sure those sidelights are the same color they are part of the door. I think a garage door with some windows across the top and then maybe a simple front door in black with some glass too, maybe even all glass with simple sidelights no grids. That little arch over the window on the left needs to go too . Much larger sconces on the garage and a much nicer light in the entry . THEN landscaping and you will need some help to get it right . Not any additional driveway for sure .I would keep the white exterior , black door, and garage door

I wouldn't bother with the arch over the window. Removing it will cost a lot and not make much of a difference. And, were you planning to change/remove the porthole on the very left? I'd keep them all, so they reference each other.

Be careful with digital designs, because they tend to show all plants in bloom at once and, therefore, look fantastic. Most plants bloom for a month or less, so you don't want to base your decision on a picture with spring, summer and fall bloomers all in bloom at once, which isn't going to happen in real life. Digital designs often have the proportions slightly off or plants too close to the house.

Most importantly, you clearly have gardens. What's there? What's working? What's not? Nothing is going to look good this time of year before plants are up and trees leaf out. If this is a flip, I'd plan to fill in with annuals when the season starts. If not, wait to see what you have. Otherwise, you may spend a lot of money ripping out a perfectly nice garden and replacing it with something that's not any better.

Just a note. “Real” wood garage doors look nice for a very short while unless meticulously maintained on a regular basis, at least where I live ( So Cal beach ). I had two beautiful custom wood gates at my previous home, had to be refinished often $$$ even though we have very mild spring like weather year around.

I like your house colors as it is now but the all over Charcoal above is very nice..

For inspiration, you can upload a photo of your house to ChatGPT and have it landscaped and/or painted.

Of course with AI minor mistakes are possible but some on Houzz have said it is worth the subscription for ideas.

You can upload a photo of your house to paint companies online and "paint" it using their colors for free.

These are not your house but I prompted a description to AI on some ideas posted so far.

Not sure if the existing garage door has lites (windows). or not. If not, will suggest you replace with one that does.

I think your house would look lovely with a more modern style wood look front door and a coordinating garage door in wood to match.

I don’t find the arches offensive. It will be a big expense to remove them. I like the colors as is. The lack of landscaping seems to be the problem.

I like the second example from @tracefloyd. The door is wooden and clearly stands out. The new garage door is now more recessed (visually). A front door needs to be obvious, and wood against white is classic.

I would not paint the brick a dark gray. It looks dreary. Your white house is lovely but needs some sparkle. Besides a classic wood front door, you need landscaping. Most local garden centers will give you a free plan if you buy the plants from them. Once you have a plan, you can buy the plants a few at a time.

Don’t mess with arches and structural parts. Update the two doors (front and garage) and power wash the driveway.

Here are some front doors that will let in some light.

How about one like this? It’s a modern type vinyl I think and has a wood texture. I had them paint in two tone to look like wood.

Where did you get this door Andhi?

I’m in Calgary Canada and I ordered it through Lux. The vendor for the slab is Madero/Plastpro and the painting was done through a local vendor in Edmonton and custom colour.

Here are the details for the door - but the colour was custom and details I cannot find.

It’s actually fibreglass not vinyl. And you’ll find the slab on plastpro
