Thanks Pam....I was hoping you would chime in! That does help, and jives with my instinct and experience. Tell me about the bricks to raise your planters above grade. I've seen differing opinions on this, some say that "wicking action" when in contact with something below increases drainage, while other say the air gap increases drainage. Your thoughts?

I have all my containers raised off the ground. I'm sure the underlying soil condition could play into the wicking action and that can vary widely but IME, roots (and/or weeds) grow out and in the drain holes unless there is a gap.

No such thing as "too many" drain holes unless they are oversize allowing soil to escape.

I suppose fewer holes would be better if you watered only one end of a really long bed but that's another topic.

What do you grow gardengal in your containers? Some pics would help from such an experienced gardener.

Sorry, no pics. I've gardened heavily in containers for more than 40 years but that's been spread out over 7 different gardens. My gardens are always in a state of transition and not what I consider very photogenic.
