How much drainage in steel planters for veggies?

last month
last modified: last month

I have two new corten steel planters, they are both 26" cubes. They are not the same brand. One has two 3/4" holes, plus eight 1/4" holes. The other has two 3/8" holes.

I've done some research and as expected, suggestions are all over the board. One source says "one 1/2" hole for each 36 square inches of bottom area". My planters each have 676 square inches of bottom area, that would mean 18 or 19 - 1/2" holes. (for what its worth, they both have 10 cubic feet of volume).

What do y'all think? Does that sound right, or would that be too many? I'm thinking its a bit much.
