Ideas to make sliding brass-framed mirrored closet doors look better

last month
last modified: last month

I have 2 side by side closets that each have 2 sliding mirrored doors in a brass frame and was wondering how i might be able to create a more appealing closet hiding solution. The picture here is an example; mine are not quite as nice. My brass frames are very brassy looking.

House is midcentury so i don’t want to ruin that vibe.

Thanks for your help!

Is your plan to replace the doors?

I would replace them. They are a cheap looking type of door and give the air of the 80's. Anything done to them is good time and or dollars after bad. Just my .02. OR at the very least show us YOUR DOORS.................................

Must it be inexpensive or is price secondary to appearance?

If you’re keeping the doors & want to tone down the brassy look try using ”Rub ’n Buff”, comes in a variety of finishes & gets good reviews.

I’ve also seen them covered in peel & stick wallpaper , grasscloth looking is what I saw & it looked surprisingly good.

I would consider replacing with bifold doors. Louvered doors would fit a mid-century vibe, and would allow for air circulation. Doors with glass panels, backed with fabric, would look lovely, like No. 19 in this article:

The article shows a lot of other great ideas for closet doors, too. And even if some of them don't immediately say "mid-century," that doesn't mean they won't work well overall.

Is it the brass frame you don't like, or the vast amount of mirror?

I would add a film to the mirror and use the rub & buff to tone down the frame, or prime and paint the frame to match your trim. Films are available everywhere, including Amazon.com

@lisedv i just want to make it look nice, so if that means replacing the doors, so be it.

Hard to find a perfect example of my idea, but here goes. Leave the mirrored doors as is. Color drench the room in a tone similar to a brass tone (not the brass finish). The wall color will reflect back onto the mirror.

Same idea for the sliders. Soft brass tone draperies. Same for floor, soft brass tone rug. Same for bed, soft brass tone coverlets. Keep any wood light and warm.

@oncape not sure i understand about the sliding doors; are you saying to put draperies in front of them?

We painted ours with wall paint. In one bedroom we painted it with the same paint as the wall. In the other we added trim around, and painted it with the white trim paint. In both cases the paint stuck just fine to metal and glass, and has lasted years.

Before that, when it was a nursery, we wallpapered it with regular prepasted wallpaper with a child theme. Bugs Bunny if I recall. It came off easily when we decided to remove it and paint.

We thought we might replace them some day but they're so unobtrusive that it seems not worth the effort.

Sorry...leave the mirrored closet doors as is. Paint the room all one color, trim included, in the tone of the brass closet doors. Now the wall/trim color works with the mirrored closet doors.

The draperies go on the exterior windows I see reflected in the closet doors.

The entire space becomes one soft brass tone. The brass frames just blend right into the room.

If you want to keep the mirror you could paint just the brass. Either the wall colour, or the room's wood trim colour. Our wall paint on the sliding door trim has lasted 30 years and no chips. Teenage boys' rooms for 10 years, so not delicate use.

As suggested above, you can 1) paint the brass frame, 2) replace the doors for similar ones with a white metal frame, 3) choose an updated style of sliding mirror doors, 4) choose louvre doors, 5) wallpaper your existing doors (shown here in a wood look, grasscloth can also be nice..

If you don't want sliding doors they you have several more options.
