It needs a rug and some lighting in addition to what is just overhead.

Start with a RUG, remove the massive "floral" on the cocktail table. Add a chair or two, so the area feels more conversational.

Art is personal ....but that feels a tad heavy and overwhelming and is also hung a bit high.

More pictures, other angle would help, and we have no drawing, no dimensions so as what FITS will remain a mystery until you shall provide..feet and inches.

Lighting for sure the art is personal if you love it then that is okay. I hate the sectional with all the guets lined up like a kids BD party . Maybe 2 sofas and chairs instead . I think color is a must so that is easy to do with a great rug . The step down will of course need to be addressed but a long sofa there will do the same as the sectional What is the space to the right ? INfact a to scale plan of the whole living space could be very helpful .

Yes. A rug. Yes, Chairs instead of poofs. Yes Yes. Lamps on the side tables. I love the sectional. That is the kind of room that is made for a sectional. It softens the very hard look of the room. The flowers on the coffee table interfere with possible conversation. What is under the stairs?

Color and soft furnishings seem to be missing. Items like cushions, lamps with texture, a beautiful rug with color, maybe gold, cream, greens. Try to pull out colors from your large art piece, which seems very deliberately placed.

The art is mounted too high for the room

    The windows need drapery panels

The space needs a tree with up lighitng in the base

The area needs a rug to define it

The seating requires some level of lighting at eye level

I would add a custom wood table or bend behind the sofa although it would require some woodworking skills to fashion the legs to allow for the step in the corner.

I too think the arrangement on the coffee table is too big/full.

I would look for a larger ottoman style coffee table, Low back Swivel chairs

and of course a dark patterned area rug to tie in the dark art and the black wrought iron.

Not something in the budget but a more modern stair case railing would do alot

it is empty is under the stairs!

Huh? No one can see under the stairs since you've only shown one pic!

It needs a rug and some color. Get a rug, maybe an oriental with some reds and add red to your sofa with some pillows. I'm not a fan of your art, but you could pick up some yellow from it.

Please add some more photos. Take them straight on with:

    1) the art wall at your back of the staircase wall

    2) the stairs at your back of the wall with art

    3) with the exterior doors at your back

I normally like light colored carpets but the dark Surya rug posted goes with the dramatic painting and is a good foil for it -- if large enough.

    Exactly what Beverly said.

Lower the art. above a sofa there should be only 4-6" of space.

    See how this one is?

She also mentioned window panels. Just like THIS:

See how it frames the windows? and the potted tree next to the sofa and by the door? And the rug to ground everything.

And lets talk about this room w/that art! (see how it's only hung a few inches above the back of the sofa?)

You have that gigantic wall with beautiful light, so show it off!

Look at this one. everything is very monotone but then this art literally explodes w/life:

Speaking of that art, while the size is just fine, the art itself does absolutely nothing for the room. I know art is personal, but you did ask.

If you want to keep that art, then you need to add in elements that coordinate with it. You have all solids in here. add some pattern and colors. notice these array of pillows. they work w/the art and the sofa color.

Lose the tall vase on coffee table and get a dark tray and accessorize that.

I'd lose those two small stools and get something larger in either wood or black.

Look at these next two tall living rooms. (first one doesnt need window treatments) you see how the stool placement is better sized?

this one w/window treatments, neutral rug and elements, but a lot of contrasting accessories.

Speaking of black, it wouldn't hurt to use it somewhere to go w/that black art. Look at the elements in this picture (w/the black) and see how they look w/your large art in your room?

even black trim work or these shelves, coffee table would go well w/your art

you need the contrast. For sure some type of pattern rug. something w/black/taupe/beige

Look at how nice this art work is w/the colorful pillows the sconces and the chandelier. you can do this

another beautiful coordination of artwork w/pillows/throws, tree, stools, etc

another idea on how to hang window panels:

Beth, you have given her so many good ideas to ponder. This is one of the best Houzz "decor responses" I have read in a while, partly because you found so many perfect illustrations that show us what you are describing. Houzz Pros make this site very special. Thank you to ALL of the Pros who graciously give of their time and advice. 🌿

The poufs in the large open space look like you are ready for leap-frog 🐸

The art is too big. It is dwarfing your furniture and everything else. It is a stunning piece. And I am 99% of the time absolutely NOT about telling people what art they should have in their space and/or where they should display it. Art is extremely personal. But in this case, imo, the art is not working.

Do you have another room or hall where you can showcase it better? It could take up a whole wall, and that’s fine.

You may have the idea that you need huge art in the LR due to the very high ceilings. But you do not. If that were the case, all your furniture would need to be 20 feet in height. You just need to decorate the space basically at eye level. The art can be large- but within reason. And have some lighting at eye level- lamps, sconces- to that effect.
