Help and ideas for our Minnie Aussie’s Sleep Habits

last month

Help with our Aussie’s sleep habits at home. We live on 4 acres.

When we are away from home, in hotel rooms, camping, at the cottage, or even at DD place, our Minnie Aussie sleeps all through the night.

However, at home he wakes us

up 2 or 3 times every

night, barking to go out. This, no matter how much he is walked etc. He always sleeps on the floor beside us. We are sleep deprived.

We simply don’t understand the difference or why he sleeps great everywhere else but home.

try this...just choose a word or very short phrase ("false alarm!") and as soon as he barks, use that word with a commanding voice with a tone that will get his immediate attention. don't be loud and don't repeat it over and over. say it once or twice and if he knows, by the tone of your voice, that you mean business, he should stop. the instant he stops barking, pop a treat in his mouth, make a fuss and tell him what a good boy he is. rinse and repeat doing this until he understands that the word/phrase you use means QUIET RIGHT NOW. once he is quiet and settled in his bed, ignore him.

this won't happen overnight but i've never met an aussie that wasn't very trainable and after a few nights of doing this, the light will come on in his head and he will realize that barking like he is doing isn't getting any positive results so with time, it should lessen to the point where he will understand that every sound doesn't mean he has to alert the whole household.

good luck!! dogs are so funny and sometimes try our patience in a major way but it's hard to get too angry with them. here's a good example...i was standing in the checkout line at the local dollar general store recently. i had left the dogs in my van where they usually just watch the door i entered in hopes i'll bring them a treat. there were a few other people standing with me when we all suddenly heard the blaring of a car alarm. i didn't think too much about it but then it just kept going. a guy walked into the door and said to everyone, "umm, i think that's my fault. i was talking to a couple of great big dogs when i walked by and one of them started barking like crazy, jumping from the front to the back." that's when i realized it was MY van and sure enough, when i walked to the door, i could tell. my silly dane boy was being so adamant thinking he needed to protect HIS van, the noise he made and the motion he caused set off my car alarm. had i been sitting in the van with them, they would have welcomed a perfect stranger with wiggles and demands to be petted but since i was nowhere in sight, frank took it upon himself to guard HIS van. he caused quite a stir but i couldn't fault him. at least i know for sure my van was safe from being stolen! 😂

the merle is the offender, my brindle girl would have smothered a stranger in kisses and drool!

Why are you walking a dog that has 4 acres to run on? He should be outside playing most of the time and quite tired at night..

@ShadyWillowFarm Bear simply doesnt run around the property, i wishe he did This is unline so many other visiting dogd, who just take off. The property is not fencer, there is a busy street withib rwnge and neighbours have chickens Despit, that they are in an enclosed coup, bear wanders over there which sends them into panc mode! Interestinly, even when we go to off leaah dog parks, he is like glue against my feet.

We plan to fence our yard, but as the property is solid rock, it will br an expneive and trdious endeqvour We are in Shield Country.
