Rugs and fireplace for a Mediterranean Organic vibe (+ floor plan)

last month
last modified: 21 days ago

[Updated: LR pics from 3 different angles + floor plan. Painting and fireplace replacement are in progress. ☺️]

I want to improve the cohesiveness of my LR by using a color palette of cream, green, and burnt orange (Mediterranean Organic?). I think these colors will complement my brown floor, brown furniture, and orange loveseat (I will keep for now ;). I plan to paint the walls "SW Greek Villa" and the fireplace mantle and wall "SW Dried Thyme".

🌿 RUGS: I am looking for rug recommendations with that color palette. (1) 8' x 10' area rug and (2) 3' x 5' entry rugs (different pattern for variety, but same colors for cohesiveness).

🌿 FIREPLACE: I'll remove the horizontal shiplap and then paint the wall, as well as the shelf and legs of the fireplace, green for now, but I'm looking for ideas for a future remodel. Currently, both the fireplace and kitchen range have shiplap with gray and b&w tiles.

I would appreciate your suggestions for the rugs and the fireplace to create that Mediterranean Organic feel.

I'm all for eclectic style for a room or home, but IMO your room is just too random in furnishings selections. No two items seem to work together.

Here is an eclectic room that leans Mediterranean in colors and finishes, but the brown is a link with certain finishes, accessories and art.

I think you might want to consider a layout that allows the rug to match the angle of the fireplace.

A natural fiber rug could look nice - and add neutral texture

Thanks for the inspo pics @la_la Girl and @BeverlyFLADeziner!

😊 la_la Girl, I'm not sure about the brown jute or sisal texture. I'd prefer something that feels softer underfoot. LOL.

    😊 BeverlyFLADeziner

    1. I see your point on "random furnishings." I'd like to keep my current furniture, but I could add new cushions and textiles that align with the color palette.

    2. And I will organize the artwork by style and swap pieces from other rooms to maintain a cohesive look in the LR.

    3. I’m open to a layout change, but I found that an angled rug didn’t work because the wall of windows is the focal point for me, not the fireplace, and the circulation pathway felt awkward in the open floor plan.

@la_la Girl, Here I added your suggested Taraji Herringbone brown rug and painted the fireplace green and the right wall cream with the "SW visualizer". Now, I'm thinking a color other than brown for the rug since my furniture and flooring have various shades of brown? Any suggestions?

Can you share examples of "Mediterranean-Organic color palette with cream, green, and burnt orange" rooms that you like?

    lobo_93 thanked mtnrdredux_gw
  • last month

Yes, but do you have rooms you like? That is usually a very good starting place. I like the textures you have in the room. Not so sure about orange with green though. I would lean toward brown/cream/tan/orange (an Hermes room, LOL) but maybe if you had examples of rooms you liked it would be easier to help.

👋 [EDITED link] (1) I like these LR, that I have saved here: https://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/180583729/list/archways-fireplaces-windows (2) And this is the color palette I'm going to paint: green (fireplace), cream (walls), white (ceiling):

I like your inspo rooms. To me, though, most of them are neutral rooms. The one with ornage chairs has a grey fpl, but only half the wall. I think painting your fpl green, floor to ceiling ,could be a lot with the orange sofa.

@mtnrdredux_gw I will check out that Hermès look ;)

Today, the painters are here, and I hope the creamy walls paired with the green accent wall around the fireplace will create a lovely backdrop.

We've found a smaller mahogany mantel (shelf and legs) on FB to replace the old white one. We'll remove the old mantel, paint the wall green, and install the new one.

PS: I would love your help in finding cushions and rugs to complete the look.

Less is more in this instance. Your room as pictured is heavy looking. Remove all but the basic furniture chairs and sofa, and accessories. Once you have decided which furniture works, remove pieces that don’t. range to optimize the window view, keeping in mind your eye will drift to fireplace as a second focal point. Add rug, then maybe 1/2 of the accessories and decor as before. Remember the eye needs open space for resting to appreciate all components.

It’s a nice room. I would try removing the settee and put the sofa there. Then 2 chairs across from it. I don’t think I would arrange the furniture to align with the fireplace. Good luck!

May I suggest that even though you aren't ready to remodel the fireplace, removing the box molding around the mantel will be a big help. It's way too busy with the vertical tile, patterned hearth, and horizontal shiplap.

This is a beautiful wool rug that could work to bring all your colors together. You could order the smallest size to see if it works in your room.

"May I suggest that even though you aren't ready to remodel the fireplace (...)" @katinparadise

Actualy, we are remodeling it now ... During the removal of the old mantle, some tiles and the sheetrock were damaged. We ended removing all the tiles (along with shiplap) and repaired the sheetrock. With a blank slate, we are now installing a new limestone hearth, which will raise the base for the mahogany piece to fit at the top of the firebox. Then that painting has been postponed until Monday. I’ll update as it goes. Cheers!

I love an eclectic look but I think you need a few more through lines in here. I’d get a rug the color of the low rattan chair and settee. Get throw pillows for the orange sofa that are the low rattan color as well.

Show is the sage fireplace with orange sofa when it is all in place.

I've done an inventory of 1-LR furniture, 2-music nook & plants, and 3-I'll share a floor plan too.

I want to replace my heavy side tables and possibly the coffee table. For art, I plan to hang only 3 oil seascapes we love on the north wall by the fireplace... I'd love your suggestions. Thank you all once again!

Hi reporting in here as asked to see what you have going on. If I were walking into this space i would do the following

    1. remove the ship lap from fireplace

    2. paint the entire space one color. I would suggest the greek villa. there is no need to paint the fireplace, Why does everyone want an accent wall? it makes it look like you were afraid to commit. Your space is too small and too chaotic for it.

3 . you have a lot of small furniture pieves so nothing is anchoring the room. it just looks bust and like these are all random handme downs you are making due with. If you are going to invest in anything it shouldnt be new cushions it should be one larger piece. I recommend you . Bring in another sofa to anchor your space your coral/orange piece is not large enough to be the anchor for the room

4 . stop with all the weird angles for things like the sofa, Your space doesnt have the depth from window to opposite wall for this. you are makng the space look smaller than it is.

5 . bring in an apartment size sofa in a light neutral.to float

6 move the orange sofa to the window wall so it will create an L shape seating arrangement with the light sofa

7 anchor the two sofas by using an end table and lamp between them

8 float your daybed bench opposite the orange sofa

9 use the largest rattan chair and place it to the right of your fireplace slilghtly angeled in towards the room. get an interesting round table or drum table to place to the left of that chair.

10 large art work or a series of four behind it on this wall

    11 interestng mirror above fireplace

    12 interesting chandelier

13 brng your green color into the space with an area rug and accents

14 eclectic pillows in fabrics that pull from your colors and art

15 sofa table behind your light floating sofa with two cube ottomans under it for extra seating

    16 woven roman shades

    17 warm white drapery panels

ditch the other rattan chair and odd tables . less is more here. way more.

    placement not actual pieces

the angle on the chair and table isnt correct but you can see placement in the above. Best of luck to you.

😊 Design Interior South, Thanks so much for your report and the awesome mockups! I really appreciate the detail you put into them, and I will review everything carefully. Below are a couple of details/ updates:

1- Furniture layout and tables: "stop with all the weird angles for things like the sofa". @DIS [Edited for clarity]: Last year, I created a music nook by angling the loveseat with the piano behind it. I moved the piano to face the windows, so I can enjoy both the music and the view. Any other layout options for the piano (not facing the walls)? And any links to side and coffee tables would be appreciated.

2- Paint: I’ve already started painting the common area in Greek Villa. For the corner fireplace, we removed the shiplap, painted the green backdrop in Dried Thyme, and are installing a smaller red mahogany mantle. I love your suggestions for rug and cushions with green, could you please send me the link?

🌿 Update: the walls are now painted, and the fireplace is installed!

In the 1st pic, you can see the darker wood furniture and piano (while the lighter settee and scoop chair are just out of view). I would love your advice on how to arrange everything back.

[Edited PS: Please note that the furniture hasn't been put back yet; it's just against the back wall while I'm still cleaning. I just wanted to show you the paint and the fireplace ASAP😂]

I say this in the kindest way possible. You are asking for advice but doing the same thing that wasn't working for you to begin with. I would never float an upright piano in a room. It looks wrong on all levels . The piano wasn't evident to me in the first photos you shared. Although I appreciate your explanation it still doesnt work. I have given you my professional plan and advice and I will stick with what I said, Modifying it to include the piano. Best of luck.

@Design Interior South, here is the layout you suggested. Spatial Limitation: the pathway (in yellow) to the DR and entryway crosses through the rectangle designated for the LR. That is why the chairs cannot be centered on the window wall; instead, they must be placed to the right, closer to the fireplace, so the loveseat and table behind it can fit...

I think this is good. I would eliminate one of the two large tables. I would place one to the window side of the sofa cornered between sofa and chair and add a lamp on it. Remove the one between the chairs. Its too big. Get a small round drink table something like this. Maybe in a metal finish. https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/mercer41-wegner-round-wooden-drink-table-w116717593.html?piid=786338929 . Your chair and sofa should not "overlap" each other so if it still does once the smaller table is between the chairs you may need to eliminte one of the chairs. Otherwise I think the layout is really nice

"The fireplace looks so much better! I have to admit I didn’t notice your piano earlier either." @Hellogardener

1- Fireplace: Thank you! I have been making changes to the farmhouse style left by the prior owners and sharing my dilemmas/ progress here. I am pleased with the corner fireplace now, and I really like how the new mantel goes well with my music cabinet.

2- Piano: Yes, I have a piano, ... a large bench, two guitars, and a tall music cabinet that all need to fit in this space (😂@Valinta inventory below).

This room is for playing music, reading, and enjoying the view outside. The "eclectic" seating works well for those purposes, and they hold sentimental value for me, so I'd like to keep them. But I would love to hear your recommendations for tables, cushions, and rugs to create a more cohesive look for the space. Thank you so much!

The mantle looks so much better. If you are going for a Med orgainc look, the mantle wall would look much better painted the same white as the rest of your room. But, I presume you love this green as you just painted it. And, I admit I'm biased because accent walls make my skin crawl. :)

Your day bed is lovely, but looks like a show piece. Does anyone sit on it for playing "music, reading, and enjoying the view outside." It is the only seat in this current set up that has a view of the outside and it just doesn't look comfortable.

I'd eliminate the daybed. Place your two chairs there facing the window but closer towards the window wall. Keep your sofa where it is. Get a much smaller coffee table. Make the 2 chairs, sofa, coffee table set up tighter so you have a better pathway around it.

I think you are going to go through a lot of returns trying to shop online for a green rug that will look right with the green of your wall. Either shop in person with a paint sample, or stick to rugs that have less green.
