Unfurled Hostas in Snow and a Freeze Tonight

Will wet snow help insulate my newly emerged hostas? The Rocky Mountain weather has been so crazy (well everywhere has been, right?). We've had an extremely warm, dry winter. We were in the high 70's much of March (even 83-84° on occasion), so the gardens think it's Spring and half my hostas are up and unfurled. So the forecast showed some rain today (happily and finally had heavy rain the past 2 days!) and showed temps falling below freezing in tomorrow's early morning hours. I planned to cover hostas this evening but then an icy ran began, which turned to a wet, snow - it was 37°!

With the snow coming down hard, we covered the hostas as best we could. Was it too late? Will the snow sitting on the leaves under a cover cause more damage? I

If this info helps: It won't be 32° until 2 am, and 28° being the lowest at 6 am.

Hi Kay, I suspect those leaves and pips will be mush. Similar happened to me last year, and my hosta beds were pretty ugly. Badly deformed leaves, or greatly reduced pip counts. I’m afraid I will be in the same boat this year - we've had days of warmth and rain, everything up - and Monday’s low is projected to be 26F. Best of luck - I hope the snow provided insulation for you.

We had a freeze a couple of weeks ago, after several of my hostas had started to unfurl. The ones I covered (with nursery pots) didn't fare any better than the ones left uncovered. The containers that I placed in our shed held up though.

The few that were damaged are looking pretty ugly, but their newer growth is fine.

    Indianagardengirl -

    Wait! The pips too?!

Yes, pips froze on the tips. Leaves unfurled but boy were they ugly. I picked off the mushy tips and ended up with raggedy half leaves on many.

Many of these pips are more than 4” and if we hit 26 i suspect i will have another year of uglies 😢

Yeah, our crazy Utah weather! My hostas haven't unfurled, but now I'll be out looking at the pips tomorrow. We should be done with our freezes after tonight, fingers crossed. It was great to get some much needed rain! Too bad the temperatures had to drop so much.

I hope you'll have some success since you went to the trouble to cover yours.

If you feed the hummers, someone has reported a sighting in Farmington already! That was before the freeze, and it's a couple weeks earlier than usual. I put my feeders out, just in case.

Sorry this has happened all. The new leaves that unfurl will cover the ugly. I have had this happen from freeze and deer. I still have snow cover but lots of rain today and then freezing again so I might have some pip covering to do on a couple of early risers at some point.

Wow! I don’t even have any ground pips! The hostas in the garage are starting to pip, but they are in pots.

I swear they can take 24-25 degrees with no damage (in the pip stage)

Several of mine suffered frozen pips last month with the late frosts. The leaves that finally emerged from the damaged pips look rough, but the rest of the leaves are Ok. The 3rd plant is Montana aureomarginata m, which was already unfurled when the frost hit.

We’ve had two days of warm weather and quite a bit of rain and now a lot of my hostas are pipping! 🤩

The last freeze warning my hostas weren't unfurled and the pips came through fine. We had some warm, very nice days after that.

But last night we had another freeze and my beautiful, unfurled hosta leaves look like wilted lettuce now. Another freeze tonight.

Looking out the window I thought some trees had white flowers on them. But nope, it's only frozen globs of snow. Spring is always erratic, but it's still my favorite time of year.

Really bad freeze here last night. only one of my hostas has real leaves yet, all the rest pips, so i just piled mulch on them

Not good news for a few of them

Great news! Even following the new freeze nights we had a few days ago, and some hostas fully unfurled, there is very little damage to my hostas!

We just threw old sheets or tablecloths over the ones that were most unfurled, with a stake in the center to hold the weight of the wet snow off the leaves. I checked on my Mom's yesterday and they look terrible. Her house is only a few miles away, so weather is about the same and her hostas were in well protected areas; e.g., against the house or under a tree next to the covered patio. No one lives there right now and I can't get over there regularly to water the containers, so they were really dried out. I wonder if that made them more suseptible to frost damage(?).
