Small Entryway

My ranch house has a small entryway with a built in closet as you walk in the front door to the left. I’m looking for suggestions for a more vibrant rug (if possible 4’x8‘ in size) and a different light fixture to elevate the space. It currently feels very brown. I’m including a few photos of the ooen concept room off the entry. I have also included two photos of lights i am considering.

Thank you in advance!

Would a rattan hanging light or the other star shaped work well? I guess my style is modern rustic. i’d like to soften thigs a bit and add pops of color.

A black rug along these lines would give you more contrast and definition- so the area would not appear all brown. If you like the star, definitely go for it. Of the two you show, I like that one the best. I don’t really see the rattan working for your entry.

I like the look of the rattan but wonder if it will cast too many shadows and if it will throw light in too small of a pool. An entry way seems like a place you want well lit on a dimmer.

@Katherine Wilson I love the versatility of your living room furniture choices and arrangement. For a rug color for the entry rug, might you consider picking up the cool greyed spruce greens and blues in the print on the wall? They are a nice color foil for warm browns... cool and airy.

For a ceiling light, I struggled with that too. The "appropriate" flush lights with a frosted bottom shade mostly made me want to cry. I felt like I was sitting in the principal's office. You seem to be looking for something more interesting and happy to set the tone for your home. Wayfair has a couple flush-mount Moravian-star-like lights (photos). I eventually settled for something more contemporary, and there are several versions of this style, but it might not be "farmhouse" enough for you. The challenge is to find something that casts diffused downlighting but doesn't look sad. A sweet little table lamp on the console could also add light to the area. Will you mount the mirror on the wall?

Had to shop a little. I'm guessing at the size of your entry. Is this too "happy" for you? https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Green-Rugs-Small-Living/dp/B0DYV7K2KB

Not a fan of either light. The eye is immediately drawn to the outside and the warmth/style of your lovely living area, so I’d mimic that feel to create a natural flow. An injection of black will help connect the rooms as well and your art on the right will become the star (maybe hang slightly lower).

I’d add some lovely clay pottery on the cabinet and hang the mirror. Down the road, maybe look for a mirror that better suits.

More size, more light equals more PRICE. Pay attention to dimension ::)

@Katherine Wilson- when I posted here last night, I was not able to include a visual of my rug idea in your actual space. I’ve had a chance to create one- so just adding it.

I was not able to include your exact star fixture in this one- but this light is sort of similar.

So I hope this gives you a better idea of what I was describing. I will add this visual to my previous comment, also.

To your comment about the entry feeling "very brown," a solution would be to paint all the wood trim to tone down the brown. And get a rug with an actual color instead of brown/neutral.

Would you consider removing the wall between your entryway and the stair and replacing it with a railing? As it is now both the stairway and the entryway seem small and closed off.

This new picture is very telling. If it were me, I’d remove this furniture asap. It creates a bottleneck when there’s no need. If you must have that piece and its storage, move it over to the left on that half-wall.

The mirror would be ok if hung. Maybe a small shelf under it.

@littlebug Zone 5 Missouri- You make a good point about the size of the console; and your idea to hang the mirror on the wall with a floating shelf is a very good idea. OP has a built-in closet right there by the entry door, so there should not be a lack of storage in that area.

Btw, the picture you used in your comment is not actually the OP’s. It is an image that I created (editing the OP’s room pic) to show some ideas.

Yes, @freedom, I realize the picture I picked up was one on which you had made suggestions/alterations. Rather than scrolling all the way back up to the top to use the OP’s own picture, I just copied the closer one to the bottom. Quicker for me.

I apologize if you were offended by my using that particular picture to illustrate my point.

No, @ littlebug! I was not offended at all! I thought you were under the impression that it was a new pic that the OP had added, so I was just clarifying.

I’m happy that you found some use for my visual. I thought I was talking to myself on here.

Black could provide contrast and stand up to all the wood. And OP says her design style is ”modern rustic” - which I don’t think a black rug in the entry would be unheard of and/or considered tres bizarre for ‘modern rustic’.

The black rug was a suggestion- not a mandate.

    Manners are also optional.

Should have considered a wall mounted console on the wall with the baseboard radiator and mirror above.

You want the console and mirror closer to the entry door.

I like the idea of bringing a metallic light into the hallway for just a little more interest. What's your budget for light and rug?

When the living room and patio are compared to the view into the entry area, it looks like they're styled by two different people. The living room is so well done with the curved chairs in a circle, cylinder floor lamp and round shade, tables, and ottoman mixed with in with straight angled pieces which all make the spaces look inviting and contemporary.

In the photo that includes the entry and stairwell, it reads as a rigid mix of about a dozen squares and rectangles that don't relate (doors, window, pony wall, fireplace, mirrors, etc). It's good you're going to remove the accent cabinet and square mirror. Consider also removing the stair mirrors, and adding larger, round light fixtures (maybe two in the entry?) and perhaps a larger round urn on the mantle. If you styled the living room, you can make this angle look great too.

So, get rid of the mirror on the ledge heading down our stairwell mirror? i know this area needs help! The macrame hanging was in the window when we moved in.

  • yesterday

There are many great suggestions above, I especially like @Norwood Architects idea to remove the full wall and @JAN MOYER suggestion to replace the front door. If those aren't in the cards for you, think about treating the entry hall and stair area as a unit.

The hall is too narrow for an entry table, you can consider placing a shallow unit on the pony wall instead. Make sure it doesn't extend past the door frame. Get a loooonng runner for the entry hall, a couple of ceiling lights, keep it simple and open.

Yes, remove the mirror on the stairs and the macrame piece. Replace the pendant with a larger light fixture and some wall decor (woven pieces?) or other items on the wall to the left of the window to balance the entry doors.

These items may not be to your taste but they give an idea of shapes and visual weights to balance the spaces. Others can weigh in with their decor ideas.
