How do I warm up the look of our windows?

We recently installed bookshelves under our windows and added window shades. The window still looks bare and cold. How do I warm it up and style the bookshelf? Tall plants (like a snake plant)? A small lamp? We live in Florida, like a "clean" look and want to give a nod to the tropics without overdoing the coastal vibe. (Pay no attention to our dog's bed near the bookshelf. That is moveable.)

Does the dog like to jump on top of the bookcases to look out?

The overall gray is what makes the space look/feel cold. Unfortunately you didn't match the shades to the white windows and you are now kind of stuck with the color scheme.

I would add more colorful plants at your fence, like crotus, ti, bougainvillea, ixora, etc.

Could the space use an area rug to warm it up? You don't show the rest of the room and furniture, so we can't really tell.

I like the look it is simple and elegant maybe some more color in the plants but honestly it suits the space maybe if the dog behaves a really pretty glass pice to reflect the light.

Add some pretty drapes? Paint the walls? Put nice molding on the windows?

I'd change out the blinds to a patterned fabric Roman blind. Change the gray tone wall color to a fresher Florida vibe. Or paint the bookcase the same color as the wall color.

You chose cool wall and shelf paint and cool shades. Cluttering your beautiful new bookcase with objects is not going to change the coolness of the room.

Instead, remove everything but the plant on the right side. Add a runner to the floor in front of the central part of the bookshelves. Add warmer bulbs to your recessed lights.

Your new bookshelves are lovely. Very nice.

Of course the cold feel is coming off all the gray. Paint the walls first of all. I’d choose a very slightly warm white. Too bad your brand new shades are gray and I assume you don’t want to replace them.

Is the floor tile gray? ☹️ Too much grayness! Agree with someone else about adding an area rug. I don’t know what color - is there ANY other color in the room?

I think the patterned (and or colored) Roman shade idea mentioned upthread is good. Except, it looks like you prefer very simple and minimalistic- so this might not work for you. A simple woven wood type shade could add some warmth- but you have just installed what you have, and they look fine.

So to tell you the truth, I don’t know what advice I can give you that you would accept. The room reads very cold to me with all of the grey; but I think you like it that way. I also do understand that grey walls can potentially work well in Florida- with the Southern exposure- to provide a calming/cooling effect. Although, my friend who lives in West Palm Beach, runs his AC 24/7- as I think many people in Florida do. He has grey walls, too! He likes it. Except, the house has a lot of vibrant color in the decor- red Oriental rugs, wood furnishings, etc.

So, I don't know. You could add a lamp. You mention the idea of adding a small lamp. I would go bigger... and black or red/coral.

    The bookshelves look great!

All that grey is what makes it look cold. Warmer lighting might help a bit, but IMO you need warmer color paint on the walls and some color. I like Lyn's idea of colorful pattern on the blinds. Or the woven wood that freedomplace mentions.

I never mind seeing a dog bed, but where's the dog? Pay the dog tax! (In other words, please post a photo, so we can all admire your doggo.)

So maybe a lamp on one side, with a piece of reflective glass (as @Patricia mentioned) on the other side (of course only use glass if your dog doesn't jump up there); or maybe a piece of rock crystal, etc.- i.e. something with color and or reflective quality.

Or one of your plants - or a crystal vase with a few eucalyptus stems, etc.

The lamp shade doesn’t have to be black, of course- but I think that some strong contrast could be helpful for your space. Plus, it looks like your dining chairs are black- and there appears to be some black or dark brown leather seating, too, possibly. So, I used a lamp with a black shade, gold metal base for warmth and reflection, and the base has coral shaping/design to give a nod to Coastal/Tropical.

You could alternatively bring in black just on a lamp base. And/or you could bring in some vibrant color on a lampshade and/or on the lamp base.

Or something like this might be another approach for adding some warmth and tropical feel:

I don't mind your plants but do agree that the gray walls make the room feel cold. Since the blinds are new and you aren't likely to want to paint, try changing the pots to something more colorful. I also like @chispa's idea of adding some colorful plants along your fence to give you something brighter to look at.

Without seeing the rest of the room, I would suggest a rug and a couple of reading chairs with ottomans or a bistro table. Either would break up the expanse of grey.

Suggest selecting books that you don’t mind storing, to create a less lined up feel and experiment: ie: lay books down, etc. Given you like clean lines, just experiment with what’s too little/too much on the top. Overall, your windows will also benefit, so I’d just leave as is.

Install Roman shades above the window.

I am an outlier and I think it looks fresh, crips and great. As if you are getting new blinds, you just got these. :)

This is a great room. I prefer windows that are framed out, though. I think a gentle pattern on the walls would help.

I would start by painting that wall a pale shade from the outdoors..pale aqua or pale green….bringing some “life” into the room…for a start

Art and a rug will go a long way in the room....stay with warm colors. If any of the furniture is black (can't see the sofa), I would replace with a fabric sofa. If that is out of the question, add throw pillows, and definitely a coffee table...nothing shiny.

Raise the shades...the filtered gray light is not helping. Plants on window sill...go with terra-cotta pots.
