Can anyone tell me what type of architecture this house is?

    McMansion accidental.

Builders often mix styles, especially for large homes like this one. If you're looking for a standard name to describe this type of architecture (e.g. Tudor or Art Deco or Cape Cod) you won't be able to pin it down.

Although often looked down on for some valid reasons, the reality is that this is a large family home, looks well maintained, and with a great yard.

The stucco colour does not complement the roof or the stone. Painting it a colour close to that of the stone would unify the front facade, which already has a lot going on.

Some larger landscaping would help, but it may be a newer build and the plants are still growing.

    Sad Beige McMansion.

The construction permits on file at city hall may have the architect's name. You can get in touch with them if you are thinking of making changes.

Are you thinking of buying this house? The commenters above gave you some good suggestions of how to improve its appearance, but IMO, this is never going to be a particularly attractive house. I think the stucco parts would look better in siding that is close to the color of the stone. Maybe the interior is more important to you. How is the interior floor plan? That's where you live, so it's arguably more important. If you have a large family you might be too busy to notice your exterior much, and just want the space. Is it in the neighborhood where you want to live?

Sorry nothing looks right to me Mcmansion comes to mind and large but why ? The architect for this one needs a revist to school

Curious , why are you asking?

Does anyone have practical suggestions on how to improve the exterior appearance? The house is for sale currently and the poster may be the owner or a prospective purchaser who would appreciate your creativity and expertise.

Stucco colour has been suggested by several people, and I took a stab at landscaping. Anyone else up for a challenge?

Owner attempting to sell vs prospective buyer are two very different considerations. I would need a lot more information before I could make any suggestions ( other than what’s obvious in the photo ).

Masonry Tudor: Specifically refers to homes built entirely of brick, stone, or stucco, as seen on many grand English examples.

I know you didin't ask but if you decide to paint here is an option.

I like it in white. Updates the look. Proportions of the solid black front door as a focal point emphasizes human scale.

    Now it's a white McMansion.

    McMansion

Other than the terrible ( from what I can see ) landscaping & architectural issues all the mismatched windows bother me the most.

I'm not feeling the portholes myself …

It’s a house for people who can accept a house for what it is... Also, this house is for people who do not take life so seriously. Bonus points for people who like having fun. And people who are not going to care if it’s a “McMansion” - or what it is. (And btw, you are not going to find many such people on this discussion board.)

Anyone who goes into this with the idea of ”fixing” the house and turning it into something else is, imo, in for a hard life.

I would have a lot of fun with the house. It’s over the top- and my landscaping/hardscaping and everything else would be over the top.

I would definitely not paint or whitewash the exterior brick/stone... But the other areas would be easy enough to paint, if someone wanted another color.

    Paint it purple.

In 2004 we bought what might be called a MacMansion, a large colonial house with 3-car front facing garage. I knew the house would never be beautiful ... but it was on a 2 acre lot, 20 miles from downtown Boston, overlooking 30 acres of conservation land. The view out back, with no close by neighbors, and top school district, more than made up for the ugly-ish front. It also had a great floor plan inside. I would still be living there happily if DH didn't get a job relocation offer he could not refuse.

Another option if you decide to paint.

I couldn't get AI to place the pots directly in front of the pillars. Technically they are "in front" from the camera's perspective.

The pillars are now clad in stone courtesy AI.

This is a house with decisions only made by the builder and determined by $$$. No architect involved in developing these plans No matter what's changed, it will always be a McMansion. If the land is really valuable, it could be a tear down in a few years.

Here are more examples of builders McMansions.

The pix Beverly posted just above look like they were captioned by Kate Wagner of McMansion Hell, a site I heartily recommend for its educational and entertainment value.

Many people would ignore what the members of this clan think are horrible features. If the location, inside layout and schools (as @chispa stated) are what someone was looking for, they will buy it. Those of us who analyze color, style, materials, layout, faucets and curtain rings would probably not even take a look.

I have owned what this group would consider an ugly house. (I certainly did) But it was my first and my then husband and I were tired of looking and it met our needs.

I can see a large family wanting this house and not caring about what we are all picking on.

Motley Mansion comes to mind. A little this, too much of that...an assortment of disparate designs resulting in a unattractive, ostentatious large house.

If you are considering buying this house, please read this article.

I agree RedRyder. The reality is that this large spacious home is probably in a great spot and easily meets the needs of a family who will make many memories there. Easy things to brighten it up would be changing window shapes/sizes and adding more interesting landscaping. Funny thing is that while I do love the look of my house outside I mostly walk into my home and enjoy inside or am out back enjoying the yard. So what it looks like outside is a lot more for others

I can understand perfectly well why somone might buy a McMansion. But all P&C asked was what type of architecture it was. Not whether to buy, sell, or build. The answer to the last IMO is "I wouldn't." The answer to the other two is "it depends."

And many people have already taken the time to say what the home style is and comment negatively on it. Is more really needed at this point?

I don't know, because I still have no idea what P&C's agenda is.

    Who cares?

The house is what it is. And it can be worked with. Also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For example: I find many of the things that some of the ”clan” here like to be quite garish.

It would have been a very simple thing to state what style people thought the house might be- and move on. Minus all of the subjective (and continuing) negative commentary.

You don’t like the house. We get it.

If the poster is looking for a type of architecture, how about 21st Century Schizoid (kudos to King Crimson)?

I think I’m fine with schizoid. And King Crimson.

Never had I expected to see this much venom from the contributors on this site and yet here we are.

Are you serious? This site is seething with venom and judgement daily of how people live, what they buy, how they design, how they parent, how the tidy or not and more. This post is tame in comparison.

At least some of the comments here were very thoughtful. I don't know if seething is the word but there are always one or two who regularly insult I will grant that.

A circular drive might be better. I was attempting to do that- but AI and I got our signals crossed. Not AI’s fault- I wasn’t very clear. I did want the stucco painted in a color close to the brick color, as @tracefloyd mocked up. I did some paint visualizer images yesterday, myself, and I like matching the brick color. AI wasn't cooperating. I think AI likes the existing stucco color. The Tiffany blue door, wildflowers, lighting, walkway- AI is on board with me.

This is one feature of what we call McMansions. I suspect it applies to this house. It explains the odd placement of windows as well.

Frequently, priority in McMansion construction is given to the interior layout. Vaulted ceilings, the master suite, bay windows, and the expansive foyer are emphasized with less regard for how these interior spaces will shape the overall envelope of the structure. In particular, designing individual windows for their effect in individual rooms can cause the exterior to feature numerous windows with an asymmetrical or misaligned layout, in multiple conflicting sizes and styles. It has been claimed that this gives the exterior appearance an "amorphous" or "bloated" quality.

Buy what works for your family. That’s the most important message. If the outside of a house offends you, you might not be able to overcome that, but many people do. We spend way more time inside our homes anyway.

The different shapes and asymmetry of some of the windows does not bother me. I find it interesting, and I am feeling like there was some intentionality. Including the porthole type windows. I love boats, yachts, ships. Maybe there is a shipping connection with this house and/or owner.

The house is not for everyone. It doesn’t have to be.

Throwing caution to the wind, I shall respond with I do not know what architectural style it is but I am sure "Big Box Store" and "dart board" is somewhere in the list of influences.

A dart board on a circular drive would be excellent.

Re the ”porthole” windows …. ”Ahoy, matey!” Yeah, they are ”interesting”.
