Would it be a mistake to try to paint a metal pendant shade?

I really like the shape of this light fixture on FB marketplace but the black metal shade is too dark. Do I dare paint it cream?
The FB marketplace price is $400. I think it's a discontinued Visual Comfort fixture, I've asked the seller and haven't heard back yet.
What I especially like about it is the diffuser plate (?) underneath. And it's the proper size for my large, high ceilinged room (24"). And it's not $2,000 which seems to be the price of fixtures that catch my eye!

Absolutely. Use a product like stix primer to make sure the paint adheres...or use rustoleum spray which is designed to adhere to metal. It will probably need a few coats, but will work fine.

If you love it, yes, I’d absolutely paint it! It’s a very nice light.

I painted a dining room fixture with spray paint many, many years ago. It held up fine.

There are so many new types of paints out there now, hopefully someone(s) with recent experience can advise on a good one for a project like this.

[I didn’t see Annie’s post with good suggestions before mine.]

I painted a metal outside light over 10 years ago, went from black to silver. It still looks like the day I did it, and trust me, I am NOT good with this stuff. 😄

I used rustoleum spray. Very quick light coats, move past the fixture quickly or the paint will run. Patience to do a few very thin coats is key, don't go back over a spot immediately if you miss it or it will run then. Let it dry, hit it again.

Make sure it is clean and no soap. Use RustOleum paint. Decide if you want satin or gloss. Yes, to several light coats. Spray outside on a not too windy day. Tape what you do not want painted. Do not spray in flip flops unless you want painted feet. Ask me how I know, painted patio furniture last fall, lol.

I even painted a paper shade on a lamp. Back in the day when it was popular, I did a faux finish on it and it came out nice.

I just did our outdoor big wrought iron table and four chairs . It is an ornate vintage set.

I used the new Professional High Performance Rustoleum. It is really amazingly easy to use. They have made a wonderful formula and the spray is much more guided so no ” painted feet”.

If you don’t have one of the trigger attachments do get one. It makes it even easier to use a spray can. Just snaps on.

The paint comes in Gloss or flat. You will be very pleased. Always wear a high quality mask and eye protection even if outdoors , and no wind. If you can smell the odor of paint you are in danger . 🙏c

I wouldn’t hestitate to paint it… I’d like to see it with Rustoleum’s hammered finish. :)

(Feel free to laugh. It is funny. Now anyway. At the time I was Big Mad, because it wrecked my favorite pair of glasses. SO came in while I was working on the glasses, took one look at my spray painted face and almost hit the floor he was laughing so hard. Apparently my role is to provide amusement.....😄)

I would paint it if I found a color I liked. That's the main problem with pray paint -- the limited choices. Cream would not be my choice tough - nor most of the typicak spray paint colors. I would look at those hammered finish options, I might even consider covering it with fabric or something other than paint.

Ally, sorry about your glasses, and I hope you were able to get your fair (and hair?) clean with out resorting to things you don't really want on your face. Goo Gone dissolved not cured yet spra paint and then Dawn removed the Goo Gone, so you migth not have to use paint thinner, but that would still be pretty harsh on your face.

@lascatx there are paint stores that can make any color into a spray paint.

@deegw Did the seller respond? I like the fixture and would guess it is in good shape. Would/could you paint just the shade or the entire fixture?

I purchased one of the Conical Pendant from Rejuvenation for our DR, and it has a diffuser. Linen shade. Ha! It's quite a bit more now. My order 8/2021 for the 24" D x 54.6" L was only $479 plus $47.90 shipping plus tax.

Super easy DIY-- because the fixture will not get a lot of wear and tear makes it most likely to be successful. On the "any paint can be made a spray paint" claim, yes any paint can be put into a paint sprayer (all big box stores sell them) BUT not any paint is metal compatable. A proper primer could bridge this gap.

lascatx,I'm not 100% sold on the cream but it would have to be some other pale color. It's for the dining area in the kitchen/family/dining area. We have cream walls and I don't want the large black light to be the first thing that catches the eye in the room.

Allison, that is pretty and would look great. I'll have to change my account settings to see if they will send me a coupon code!

The seller said she couldn't find any manufacturer markings which I thought was odd. I told her that I wanted to look up the specs to check the weight because I wondered if we'd have to get an electrician to shore up the light box. She did weigh it for me and told me that it was 19.5 pounds.
I think I would paint just the shade, I'd have have to see it in person to figure out how to tape off the other parts.

That's great! I also have the sand linen shade. I needed the 24" D for the DR table width we had made for the last house.

You are too kind, and it is certainly not necessary. Glad I was able to help.

I took a photo for you. We have dimmers on almost everything. Ignore the lump on the banquet - my 17.5+ yo dog is napping.

Thank you, Jilly. Funny you say that. When I posted, I thought those things have been used all over our last two houses, actually three. Kitchen, LR, foyer, upper foyer, DR, den and MBR. Only the light fixture and metal table in corner with houseplant and large shells DH has found on his morning walks are new to this house.
