Help with exterior trim and door paint color

last modified: 14 days ago

Update: i added the ”after” photo below my first two.

Just had our house painted in SW Canvas Tan. The recommended trim color (SW Redend Point) came out way too pink.

I'd like some help with trim color and door paint combinations. We're going to be selling our home soon so my concern is curb appeal.

I tried using apps to get visual color combinations and Al isn't really coming through for me. I'd really appreciate any help from you kind people.
Thank you!!

I don't see any pink trim. Is this the before photo?

Sorry, I realize it’s kind of hard to notice it with the photo I posted. Here’s two more.

I agree, the SW Redend Point is too light for exterior, it makes it look pink.

Staying in the same South West Vibe, how about SW Vintage Leather,

just a darker tone on the same color. like your tiled roof color. and SW Blustery Sky for the door.

I think that’ll be pretty. I’m gonna try to get AI to add those to my photo and see how it comes out.

the wood should be primed first. (and no to paint and primer. not for exterior paint) prime w/a good exterior primer and THEN paint.

since it's spanish style, any of these will work

cobalt blue pots bring out the terra cotta

what would really add interest to that home is the spanish tile (talaver and saltillo) on the porch or walkway.

    around the door too

If you can, look for a salvaged or used spanish style wood front door. that alone will make a huge difference.

Is it too late to stop and leaving the wood as is? I like it.

Then paint the trim of the roof the charcoal gray of the support posts. Posts and trim usually have the same paint color and it ties it all in. You could paint the front door the same charcoal, but do it in a high gloss finish.

I tried all of the color combinations recommended by you kind folks and the Mexican style orange colors really looked too orange.

The house looked like a Mexican restaurant. I think part of the problem is my house has a dirt and brush hill behind it. Very brown.

Here are the after pics. I did the front door in SW retreat. I need more plants and bigger/better color planters, a larger entry rug, some wall decor.

Nice- I like your door! Do you have house numbers on there?

    Match the clay/concrete tiles color.

Those columns are oversized for the small canopy and are brutal in design.

If the canopy has been designed correctly, there would have been no need for those supports.

Molly: Thank you! We added a proper mailbox since the old one was basically just sitting on those rocks looking abandoned. The mailbox has the house numbers on it now, but I may still add numbers to the house itself.

Trace: Thank you for the ideas! I’ll post updated photos once I get the decor situation somewhat under control lol. Right now it’s still a work in progress over here.

Beverly: Thank you! I agree — the pillars are definitely bulky. If we were staying long term, I’d probably redesign a lot of it. I also strongly dislike the window awnings 😂

This house is full of questionable choices though. It has an outdoor bathroom and a creepy damp cave connected to the house through an interior door… which feels slightly illegal somehow lol.

We’ve put about $15K into repairs and upgrades so far, but since we’re moving to Europe in August, my goal was mainly to make it appealing for the next owner in our tiny Arizona mining town.

Please post photos of the house and garage and from the street as in Listing photos. I'd like to help with curb appeal for the frontage of the property.

I’d go with a light brown, and add some potted plants.

Since you are moving in August, assume you want to put the property up for sale asap, given the bigger issues below which may limit interest.

Therefore, I wouldn’t spend the time and money repainting. Adding solar lighting would be an asset and visually, just add large clay pots and a mat.

My vote is for the darker red/orange color or a dark blue. Southwest color palette for sure. Good luck and best wishes for safe travels to Europe!

What an inexpensive fix. Yes, the market maybe funky right now, but if you can deliver it will move.

Go a darker color: Navy, Charcoal Gray, Dark Eggplant, Dark Terra cota/Dark Brown or something with a strong dark color. There is not enough architectual stimulation to the front, but if monochromatic.

Paint the front door, posts on the entrance and window trim a dark matching color. Keep the trim on the house same in the same family of paint color-Slightly lighter-in the medium range. Not too light.

It looks like you have cool pots. Paint one or two with the colors in the trim, flowers or bugs. Fun and whimsical.

Get a bold solid color front door mat. Even black might look cool.

Get a cheap addriack chair in a striking color that matches(30 bucks) plastic at lowes / home depot or where ever.

Be playful but intentful in your selections.

No nicknacks or clutter. Keep it clean and focused.

    Good luck!
