PVD polished nickel fixtures won't tarnish. While nickel is a "living finish" - once PVD technology is used, the nickel stops behaving like a living finish and retains its bright, warm, reflective shine for a lifetime without oxidizing or discoloring. They will, however, still show water spots (just like polished chrome fixtures do).

My daughter has polished nickel in one of her bathrooms - she uses Meguiar's Waterless Wash & Wax. It helps prevent water spots for awhile.

Is your daughters polished nickel PVD or uncoated? i dont mind doing a little polishing and work to upkeep, i just dont want it to pit

I have had polished nickel PVD faucets from Sigma in my master bath and powder room for over 15 years. Most of the PVD finishes will say they "resist" tarnishing, so you might get some slight color changing over the years, which is evident, mostly in the shower due to our hard water. BUT there's been no pitting or chipping. I've also not had any scratching. I love the styling that Sigma offers as well.

I had polished nickel from Ikea for 18 yrs still looked like new when we sold.
