Hope you don't mind if …

last month

I show off my latest cake creation. I started decorating cakes about 13 years ago when my oldest granddaughter had her first birthday. I am self taught so when I first started making cakes, I made practice cakes and then gave them to my neighbors 3 hungry boys. They are grown and out on their own now so I'm glad I've improved my skills enough to not have to make practice cakes.

I generally try to make a cake that aligns with my granddaughtes' interests. My middle GD loves to go fishing with her dad. Their birthday are not on the same day but I decided they needed to share this year's cake since it they both love fishing so much. I can't until they see it tomorrow.

The cake is a half sheet cake, made with 3 boxes of King Arthur's Gluten Free Chocolate Cake mix. I molded the fish from a batch of Rice Krispie treats I made . I covered the fish with fondant and painted it with food coloring. The rocks are edible chocolates that I bought at Hobby Lobby.

    Cake looks amazing!

I started making cakes when my grandson was born - I'm surprised that my daughter was fine with letting me make his first birthday cake + smash cake!

I made him a dinosaur themed cake for his last birthday - luckily, he was turning four. I just made a few "cute" fondant dinosaurs after watching some YouTube videos.

I need to start making A LOT of practice cakes if I'm going to be able to make realistic painted animals for his cake by the time he's 10! Your GD and DS are going to love their shared cake!

Thanks. My grandkids and their parents arrived at our northwoods abode this afternoon. I had the cake covered up with a Do Not Touch sign on it. The were curious about it but didnt touch it. The kids were in the water within 5 minutes of getting here. My son-in-law is getting there fishing poles ready to go.

As far as the fish cake goes I had seen the idea somewhere on the internet lastfall. I think it was made on a 9x13 cake. I used a 12x18 pan. I baked the cake 2 weeks proir to when I assembled it. I wrapped the cake in plastic wrap and the foil and put it in the freezer. I took it out of the freezer the night before needing it and thawed it the refigerator. I made the buttercream frosting a week ahead and stored it in the refrigerator. I also made the fondant fins ahead of time so they would be dry when I needed them.

I used a 12 ounce box of rice crispy cereal mixed with a 10oz. bag of melted mini marshmallows to make the head and the tail end. I did not use any butter in the rice crispy mix. You need to grease your hands with cooking spray before molding the fish.

The cat tails on the cake are not edible but I assume you could make them out of fondant.

It's almost time for the reveal.

deegw, I don't really have any other artistic abilities. I used to sew and do some crocheting but that was quite awhile ago.

pudgeder and bluebell, you might be sorry that you asked me to post pictures of some of my other cakes. I’ve been making them now for family members for 13 years. I believe I have posted some in the past but I will look through my birthday cake folder in a little while and try to refrain from posting all of them.

My first cake was my first GD’s ”1 in a melon” smash cake

    along with cupcakes

This was for my second GD’s Puppy Pawty at age 2

    Along with these cupcakes

This one looked great until it started collapsing under the weight of all those flowers. It had 7 one inch layers. I later learned about using dowels.

This ”Donut Grow Up” cake was simple to decorate but cute

This ”My Little Pony” cake was fun to make.

Not sure how many pics I can post at a time so I will bore you with a few more in another post.

I loved how this ”Fun to Bee 1” cake turned out.

And I made bee themed sundresses for my girls

The mermaid tails in this cake were made with candy melts

My middle granddaughter requested a fox cake for her 7th bday so I made this from cupcakes

Had a ”3esta party with this cake

Used a frosting sheet ordered on Etsy for this cake

Had an Alicorn Tea Party. Each child got their own china tea cup and saucer (thanks to a resale store) to take home

I have quite a few more real cakes that I made but the last cake I will show off is a Diaper Cake I made for a niece’s baby shower

I have been teaching my GDs how to use a piping bagd and different decorating tips to decorate cakes for holidays and their parents birthdays. As of now they love doing it, so hopefully they have great core memories and they will carry on with their own families someday
