are you able to separate the sectional into two separate pieces?

How many people live in the home? Is this your primary TV viewing space?

Please post a floor plan with measurements including door openings, windows, fireplace, etc. Also provide the sectional measurements.

The room has nice features. New appropriate size sofas or chairs will help turn this into a more usable room for family and entertaining. .

I'd make this the dining room. You need a walkway from the front door through the room.

How many people do you want to seat? For TV or conversation or both? You say you don't use this room much. How do you want to use it?

although you haven't answered any questions. I would mount the TV on the wall where the three framed pictures are now.

and get rid of the console underneath it. Move the sectional to that wall.

even though you will have your back to the TV with the small section of the sectional, you'll still have the larger sofa pice to sit on and watch.

Get a couple mall swivel chairs for the otherside of the fireplace window area for conversation. IF you can separate the sectional, place one piece along the wall, the other in front of the fireplace.

Group all the framed are over the fireplace, instead of putting a few on every wall.

No need to add any decor on the TV wall. The floors are beautiful!!!!!

I'd have a sofa facing the fireplace and two swivel armchairs flanking it. That will allow you to watch TV. I'd be tempted to add some color with the furniture. I think blue looks good with dark wood.

@Emily wow thats some mock up! some great ideas there , everyone breaks my chops with the round mirror! i would utilize this room more if it had a little more sitting space i think, when the guys come over before we head out to dinner we used to met up here but too cramped we moved the meet up to the basement family room

@Lyn Nielson the sectional comes apart but not in a finished looking way, the dimensions are 76x76. thank for the floor comment, it was quite a bonus ripping that carpet up years ago. i did them natural, it was too nereve racking trying to pick a stain plus i did was to give some contrast to border. i saw them in the original amber look and wasnt a fan. its just me with some occassional comapy ...it could become primnary tv space but it isnt now

@Sigrid funny u mention the blue, the original look of this room was blue walls with the dark trim with the amber floors.

You might consider relocating the sectional to another room, and replacing it with 4 comfortable swivel chairs. Place them in front of the fireplace and place a round ottoman or coffee table in the middle. Keep the TV on the wall it's presently on, and when you want to watch TV you just swivel the chairs. I've done this layout 2 or 3 times for clients, and they love it.

I like that you will create a good set-up so you and your guests can hang out on the main level rather than having to use just the basement for entertaining.

Seeing the floor plan and your seating requirement for 4, I like 4 comfortable chairs (swivel) around a coffee table with ottomans that fit underneath it.

You could do 4 swivel chairs instead of the sectional or a sofa, etc. It’s an option.

But if you would like to keep the sectional, or part of the sectional- and if you would like to seat more than four people- consider just flipping the current furniture arrangement, if possible; so then, the sofa or sectional would be in the room’s (feng shui) “command position” - versus, the current (not so good feng shui) scrunched up position.

Along these lines:

Much more expansive feel- plus a clear view of the entry. I ’scribbled’ the ”art”- and as you see, I am not Picasso ;) but you get the idea of having some art there. The swivel chairs can be placed wherever they work best for you.

Below: It was not my intention to place the tv in front of the fireplace. I was trying to place it on the wall to the left of the door. It’s ok if the tv overlaps the window. You could also place it in the corner in front of the two windows. A low tv console or a tv lift cabinet would work.

Btw, although I like this striped rug in the visual, it’s a bit too large- as it extends too far into the walkway.

It’s a great 1930’s house. Beautiful wood floor, and I also love the sconces over the fireplace- very nice. Congratulations!

such great recomendations here, i particulary the swivel chairs and/or the loveseat opposite the tv really opens up the room and keeps me from having to reloate the TV, thank you all for the great input

It’s patterned after the Kate & Laurel Glenby Arch wall mirror. You can find it at Home Depot or Bed Bath & Beyond. Make sure the dimensions will work there.

Emily's suggestion is the way to go! The furniture she chose is much more proportionate and keeps the t.v. out of the traffic path.

I love Emily's suggestion. The only tweak is I'd look for an apartment sized sofa instead of a love seat. Love seats tend to be shrunken down versions of large sofas and they can feel oversized and bulky. An apartment sized sofa may be slightly larger than a loved seat but it is a sofa design in it's own right and is more likely to have more appropriate proportions, smaller arms, less bulky pillows. I find them more inviting for two people to actually sit one whereas love seats seem more inviting for only one.

Personally I don't love the style of the chairs, and I'd pull the grouping together more, out of the walkway from the front door, but AI cleaned up the room by eliminating some of the extraneous details. As I mentioned previously, i love this arrangement and so did 3 of my clients!

Sectional are very hard to place in a room. So, sell the sectional and buy yourself a sofa and a couple of chairs instead. They will offer greater flexibility. You can physically move them around until you find a layout that works well for you.

You have a TV in this space so how many seats for TV watching do you need. What does the 1930's have to do with the space since no TV then. For me this is the entry to your home so should have a purpose and if not TV watching then a totally diffrent use . In my one home where we had a LR sort of not used I served dessert and after dinner drinks in that space to utilize it. A sectional another item not in 1930s .I like the 4 chair idea but not for TV watching. Those curtains do nothing for the space and neither do those blinds .

I think the OP mentioned that the home is a 1930s vintage just to give us an idea of the style and vibe of the home. Homes built in those days were much smaller than they are now, they had a lot more architectural interest--proportionate moldings, true divided light windows, arched openings, separate rooms for entertaining/dining, etc. And yes, very important--no TV room, as practically no one had a TV then. So you either add on a TV room, or watch TV in the living room, which is totally doable. I think the 4 chairs would work for TV viewing if they were on swivels.
