what don't you like about them? Dated? Remove them all together.

Sell them, as is, and replace the blinds with something that suits you.

Cloth valances are not a current design choice. IDK if wood are either. I have wood. I love them. No one would ever talk me into in the name of 'updating' getting rid of them. Because of your question I am guessing you love fabric valances. I understand that. The reason I would leave them vs muddy them up with paint is their style. I think the scallops are a huge dating part and paint will not camouflage that. Perhaps reupholstering would be a better option. A nice clean edge would look more modern.

You could raise them up by mounting them just under the crown molding, barely touching the top of the window trim. That easy change would give a slightly more modern look. Valences are still popular in historic houses, but not in newer houses. You might be able to have these remade into faux Roman shade valences with a couple of simple pleats.

If you love the fabric, the valences could be remade into pillow covers or reworked into a throw.

Just wondering between the dark paint color + blinds + the darkening valance…do you have any interest in removing? Maybe take down and step back to see the difference and give it a day or two. How many windows are there?

If still wanting valances, suggest using a simple design and fabric.

I think it is a more simple decision… if you still like them.. keep them… if not explore replacing them with a fresh new look..knowing that a big change will probably lead to the need for more changes

Valances have not been popular for a very long time and I doubt they are making a comeback any time soon. Will simply suggest that you temporarily take them down to see if you like your room better without them.
