I have an always had wood floors as well as dogs of all sizes and haven’t had scratching/ gouging problems.
I currently have Santos Mahogany, which is extremely hard and has worn like iron, but it is very reddish, and I have selected a white oak for a house I am building now. (None of it engineered.) The trick is to pick a "hard" wood species if wear and tear will bother you, most pine would be a bad choice, but oak would hold up well.
Wood is so much easier on feet and backs!

You say you don’t like vinyl? Why is that? Are you basing that on “old-time” vinyl? Because the new LVT’s look just like wood but won’t scratch! Great for dogs in the house.

We had chestnut floors and they were fantastic. Our hickory did well but there’s too different levels. Our old floors were great, the house ed currently live in is hickory and awful.

Right, the new LVT looks great. I'm tempted, and might end up going with it. It's somewhat impossible, but trying to also go a bit more natural. Starting to hear rumblings of health concerns with the vinyl and paint fumes.

Plastic floors have a lot of issues with install and wear. They are just landfilled in a few years. If you want several lifetimes of wear, you want non toxic porcelain tile. Period. It has the lowest lifecycle cost of any flooring material.

We've had hardwood floors and a 110-pound lab. We trimmed the dog's nails as soon as we could hear them click on the floor. In 8 years the dog never scratched the floor. Our only scratches came from mother-in-law's walker.
