Ruth, you have a nice variety of peppers growing! Please let us know how you like the peppers and your favorite. I have never tried those pepper varieties.
I have one heatless jalapeno plant that is still going from last year's planting. It looked healthy at the end of the year so I dug it up and potted it to bring inside for the winter. My first time overwintering a pepper plant. It did good and was put back outside when the weather got warmer still in the container pot. I have gotten a handful of peppers from it so far.
I am also growing two paprika pepper plants and five sweet pickles pepper plants. All currently have peppers on them. 🥳 It took several attempts to get the paprika pepper plants to grow (first attempt no sprouts and other attempt young plant was disturbed by garden critter).
Anyone else growing peppers this year?

How is everyone reacting to the parasite issue in the news? How terrible! I bought some lettuce and cucumbers from the grocery store and will throw that away even though I've eaten some of it once or twice already. I heard today that you might get sick 2 weeks after eating something. Of course I'm still eating the peppers and tomatoes I grew myself, but finding it harder to give the tomatoes away so I'm sure some of those will need to be thrown away. I might put my aerograrden up once again and grow my own lettuce for awhile. I think the tomatoes will stop producing in another week or two. Really too hot to sow anything new outdoors until fall - then I'll start some fall/winter crops.

Jeanne, I did see on the news about the parasite issue too. We will stop buying lettuce for now until the weather gets cool again. They had stated the concern is during spring through the summer.
Annie, thanks for the update! Will keep an eye out for both. The garden can be unpredictable at times! Are you doing any container growing?
I am on my second attempt to plant dark green Italian parsley. The first sprouts became leggy then died. I am growing in a frog planter I recently purchased at an estate sale, placed at a kitchen window that gets morning sun. Would be nice to have fresh parsley in the kitchen.
What herbs are everyone growing this year?

Ruth, you have a nice selection of herbs growing! I had to look up the Papalo. I didn't know what that one was 🤔 Do you have a favorite herb or one that you use the most?
I love the smell of fresh herbs! I am growing peppermint, ginger, turmeric, lemon balm, greek oregano, and common thyme. There is a mint jelly recipe that I am considering making with my peppermint. I just don't know if a peppermint jelly would be good?
Has anyone tried or seen any type of jam, jelly, preserves or marmalade with any herb(s) in it before?

I dropped Nicole's envie at the post office this morning.
I love almost all herbs.
I probably use the garlic chives more than my other fresh herbs that I grow.
I buy cilantro a lot for our taco's and quesadilla's, but it doesn't grow well for me in the summertime. I use a lot of dried parsley, but it also doesn't grow that well in the summer for me.
....( Has anyone tried or seen any type of jam, jelly, preserves or marmalade with any herb(s) in it before?)
I've only seen mint jelly served with lamb in restaurants that I can remember. I'm sure there is lots of kinds if we looked for them.

How about Rosemary, Thyme, Basil or Lavender jelly??
Herbs growing in my yard....Thyme, Rosemary, Oregano, Garliv Chives, several flavors of mint, Marjoram, Sage, Basil......out here most of these herbs are year round for me. I am curious, are you all able to grow, for instance, rosemary all year? I would think TX and LA would be a yes.
- 24 days agolast modified: 24 days ago
I will mail to Heidi on Monday. It has been so hot lately that I'm running behind on a lot! I wanted to pull up my tomato plants today (but of course it's too hot for me to work out there) because there are no longer blossoms on the plants and way too many tomatoes and I haven't been willing to water the plants more than every 2-3 days or picked the tomatoes even that often, so I think it's best to clear them out. I have some seeds to grow once the temperatures cool down a lot. It sure has been a difficult year for gardening. My peppers, herbs and flowers are still good, although I need to cut all the spent blossoms off my daisies.
Annie, yes rosemary grows all year here. I have that growing and parsley, lemon verbena and several varieties of basil. The parsley is the only one that I have on my balcony, the others are in my raised bed.
I went on a bus trip to the planetarium in Chapel Hill yesterday. Nice to get away and see something different. It was the first planetarium that opened on a college campus in the U.S. (1949, I think) and one of only a few in the country at that time. I don't think I will do any type of travel this summer other than something like that. Just can't deal with this high heat much anymore.
We didn't have anyone signed up to be hostess for August or September. I will go ahead and post for August. Anyone want September?

Annie, we can grow rosemary here year round. I miss having rosemary in the garden. It's a wonderful herb to have on hand for cooking and smells great! It's on my list of plants to grow again. What kind of mints are you growing?
Jeanne, the heat is awful here as well on some days. Yesterday I was ready to go back inside as soon as I stepped out the front door. Good to hear about your trip to the planetarium. Thanks for signing up to host for August!
Anyone has any summer garden pics to share? Would love to see your garden flowers! 🏡
Re: Rosemary, Thyme, Basil or Lavender jelly?? Those all sound very interesting Annie! I have never made any herb jelly before but I definitely would like to some day. Those herbs all have wonderful strong scents to make a good jelly!

Annie, I know you stated not all the mints have a flavored scent, but I was curious about the chocolate mint? Any chocolate smell for that one? Sounds like it would be a good dessert mint!

Catching up......
Annie, rosemary and most of my herbs are perennial. Sometimes if winter is colder than normal, they won't survive. A few reseed and a few have to be planted every year.
Do any of you grow fennel? It's supposed to be perennial, but I've never had it last more than one season.
( Do we have any other mint growers here? If so, what kind of mints are you growing? I love mints!).........I've grown various mints over the years and agree with Annie. To me they don't smell like the name implies. I believe the only two varieties I'm currently growing is spearmint and Vicks Plant (Plectranthus Tomentosa). I have some scattered around inground and some in three pots. One year I had Mojito mint and for some reason I really liked it.
Nicole, I have never made pepper jelly, but I hope to make that recipe sometime this year. I want to try and make it with a little heat and different color peppers. Hopefully using Jalapeno's from my garden.
It is very HOT and dry here. Lots of triple digit temps.
I pulled my cucumber vines and some of my tomato vines. Nothing is producing right now.
Not sure of what I'll plant next.
We're having to water a lot just to keep plants alive.
I'll try to post pictures from my phone of stuff blooming. I still have plenty of flowers even if they aren't doing that great.

Ruth, thanks for posting pics from your garden. 😍 You have a lovely assortment of blooming flowers! I really like the color of your shrimp plant/tree bloom. Nice to see you have many pretty blooms with the summer heat right now!
Re: Do any of you grow fennel? I have never grown fennel before. It looks like an interesting plant though! Ruth, do you do anything with the fennel bulb or foliage for eating/cooking?

My Shrimp plants were gifted to me by a sweet friend years ago.
I have never found anything on the Fruit Cocktail Shrimp plant that I was sure was seeds.
I've never looked for seeds on the red one. The red one is hardier for me than the fruit cocktail one. It could be the location.
I will try harder to figure out how to harvest the seeds this year. If I can find them I will be happy to share.

Love the flower colors of the first pic and crape myrtles are popular in our area too. I've always liked the crape myrtles in the community yards. It's a favorite here!

Sharon, thank you for hosting July.
First picture is Texas Rock Rose.
Crape myrtles are popular here also. I have eight total. Five different varieties. All in the pink family with the exception of one lavender color.
The bottom pictures are datura. I thought I planted Black Current Swirl. It's a double/triple purple. These look like the ones called Box of Chocolates, which I don't remember having seeds for. I haven't grown datura in a few years.
