Your mom's room is traditional on the left side and contemporary on the right side of the room. I thought selecting a traditional rug for the right side might bridge the gap.

Using the window wall for centering, would your Mom consider making two distinct zones? She would position the sofa, with its back to the dining area, to create a seamless sense of separation. Like this: (not furniture, just arrangement) using two rugs.

I don’t like the division between seating area and dining area, so to unify them you could do a large rug that encompasses both areas. Some carpet stores will seek broadloom carpet and then bind the edges for you. Typically in our area around $2-3/ linear ft.

Other ideas are to use the blue in other areas, such as pillows and draperies. Rearrange some of the accessories in the bookcase and possible add a coffee table of some sort.

Before addressing rug color, consider moving the dining table slightly away from the buffet/hutch. Add a chair opposite the sofa in the living area to form a 3-point conversation grouping ( sofa/loveseat/chair). A coffee table or hassock with a tray for drinks will complete that area. Now if a rug is desired under the dining table it should match the rug in the living area. Make sure at least the front legs of living room seating sit on the rug. Dining room rug needs to be large enough for chairs to still be on the rug when pulled out. That leaves two areas with rug, and no rug on the ‘aisle’ between the two areas.
If it were meI would not have a rug under the dining table.

I like the muted blue and tan rugs suggested here! They add so much to the room. I also like the proposed new window treatments and opening the view behind the loveseat.

Be sure rug is large enough and the love seat is pulled in. Suggest choosing lighter shades (to offset the dark), in a style that is both contemporary and traditional (like the room) and keep in mind the wall color.

A large square ottoman will ground the LR area and in general feel more balanced/cozier.

If she is interested, it would be nice to pull in the DR a bit more. A blue centerpiece and a runner (+ placemats or white table cloth when dining) would be nice additions.

I agree that two coordinating rugs would be a nice idea- to differentiate the areas. Except, since there needs to be an ample walkway there to the sliders, etc.- having an additional rug in that spot might be in the way. Also don’t need tripping hazards. In any case, I think having just the one rug to define living room area, as your mom has it now, works fine to give definition to the two areas.

Ignore the flowers and vase on the rug. Those flowers were supposed to be added to the dining room arrangement... but AI had other ideas. ;) I think an ottoman style coffee table would be nice there.

No room dimensions were given, but those look like six-foot sliders with three feet between, plus the flanking walls, so this space is perhaps 24 feet wide. Other than custom-made or bound carpet, area rugs don't generally come that large, so using a single rug to span the full width, while unifying, would take some doing. I used one rug in the living area only, large enough to avoid cutting the room in half visually, then added a second loveseat facing the sofa to suggest separate areas. (I would probably choose a less country-style coffee table than AI did, but I left the one it supplied.)
