I’m trying to decide whether a coffee table or ottoman works better in a small living room.

A coffee table feels more practical for drinks, snacks, books, and remotes. It also gives the seating area a more finished look. But in a smaller room, a hard table can sometimes make the walking space feel tight.

An ottoman seems more flexible because it can be used as:

A footrest

Extra seating

Hidden storage

A softer center piece

A casual coffee table with a tray

The downside is that an ottoman may not be as stable for drinks unless there’s a tray on top. A coffee table is more useful for daily surfaces, but it might not offer the same comfort or storage.

For a small living room, would you choose a coffee table, storage ottoman, nesting tables, or no center table at all?

The room has a lot of potential. Since it will be used for cooking, dining and entertaining, I would focus on creating a comfortable layout with enough space to move around. A good dining table, comfortable seating and storage pieces can make a big difference. I would probably start by collecting ideas and comparing different furniture styles that match the overall look you want to achieve
