Turn off notifications on this site - not on phone or in email

last month

Is there any way to turn off site notifications? Like - the little bell at the top of the page (on a computer browser). I mistakenly - well, I didn't think it was wrong at the time - posted on the Wordle thread a while back and now every single time someone posts there, I show "notifications" on my browser/my account page.

They are driving me BONKERS.

I have a little red 1 next to the bell. I just ignore it.

Unfortunately, this is one thing I can't ignore. I clear all notifications immediately - whether on my computer or on my phone. It's beyond irritating for this thing to be telling me I need to look at something.

What happens if you ignore? Is there some sound accompanying it?

    I can't ignore.

At the very bottom of the thread is a place to click to turn off notifications. Heres a screenshot.

Go back to the Wordle thread and scroll down all the way to the bottom. You will see a message that says: Click to switch off email notifications about new comments . Click on that message link and no more notifications. You can do this with any thread.

No one has said one thing you might want to know. If you visit the thread again any other time after clicking off for the notifications, it'll turn it on, and it will start all over again. Don't revisit the thread, after you turn it off.

@rob333 (zone 7b) - While I see thr ”click to stop” returns after going back in, when I click it again it says somethjng like ”you already requested to stop notifications.”

I’ll let you know if I get a notification after the next person posts on chain reaction game.

Regardless, notifications on a thread should be opt in not opt out. Doesn’t really affect me though as J don’t pay attention to that bell. The only alert I care about is a PM, and I think those should go to my email. Not 100% sure ss I haben’t been messaged since I turned the fearure back on.

You don't see the notification as though you never opted out?! Weird

In the old days, of you missed it first go-around, it was over with. You were stuck forever

Notification is turned on up-front for any thread I start ... which I can then toggle off immediately, or at any point later.

Notification gets turned on if I reply to a thread someone else started, and I can turn it off immedately by refreshing the thread to get the option, or later.

The option to turn off remains on threads for which I've already toggled it off ... the purpose being that if I click it again to turn it off, the function then changes to an option to turn it back on ... thus providing a way to re-enable notifications on a thread for which I've previously turned it off.

So strange, i never get notifications unless my screen name is specifically mentioned in the comment.

And I only have the 1 notification. I don't know who or what it is about because I never tried to open it.

@rob333 (zone 7b) - You’re correct, dedtired posted to the thread and I got a notification despite having previously opted out. Stupid!

I received three notifications on this thread for the replies from dedtired and murraysmom and foodonastump that followed mine. I opted-out from notifications before posting this so shouldn't receive any more no matter who replies to the thread. I've never received notifications for my own replies that I can recall. I'm referring to notifications via email.

The bell up-top currently isn't flagged. It shows one notification if I hover my mouse over it, for a reply 14 days ago (which I read at that time) to a thread that's more than 5yo that I didn't start but to which I've replied and on which I've left notifications enabled.

You can go to "Your Houzz", then Advanced Settings, and turn off all kinds of notifications.

I received two "thank you" notifications (via email) from Offie Myffy for my replies to this thread, even after opting-out on it. I don't consider that an irritation or problem. The bell isn't flagged.

Same as dedtired. Somehow a million years ago I figured out how to turn everything off, except if I am specifically tagged - which I believe was functionality added after I opted out of everything under the sun.

I get not liking to see alerts, particularly if they aren't even accurate. I once put a piece of tape over an errant alert light in my car, also a million years ago. Kinda hard to tape off that stupid alert bell here though. 😆

@woodrose77 - I had looked at settings. All sorts of emails to opt in and out of, but the only thing I saw for notifications was whether or not you want notification when someone you follow posts. That’s it.

Food, did you look under "Advanced" settings? I'm on a PC, and it could be different if you're on a phone, or using the app.

  • last month

I wonder if it's different whether you're logged into gardenweb or houzzzzz? Or on the app or in a browser. You might need to explore different places to find the correct spot to turn off notifications. I don't use the app, am on a laptop using chrome on the gardenweb site. Upper right says "your houzzzz" and if I click on it and go to advanced setting, then scroll down to this "User Activity Notifications" where I can customize notifications and turn them off.

I don't know if it's different according to which site you're logged into, or not. I stay logged into gardenweb.com all the time.

I forgot that you need to scroll down to find all the things you can opt in or out of receiving notifications for.

I access this site through gardenweb, but when I go to my profile it switches to houzz. If I then edit that url to try to force gardenweb, it again switches me back to houzz.

Under the advanced tab under the user notifications settings I can only edit email preferences, not notifications, with the single exception of notifications about people I follow.

This is the same for me everywhere: Phone/mobile site, phone/desktop site, phone/app, laptop. Here are shots from my laptop:
