As long as the base is the same as what you have and you do not go over the wattage you can change them. You could try LEDs to get better lighting and save a bit of money on your electric bill. Not sure what you mean by classic Edison bulbs are pretty classic and IMO should never be a choice for lighting in this century .I cannot see how shades might be added maybe take pic to the lighting store to see if possible .

FYI for anyone that wants to convert a light like this to one with shades. They are called socket extenders with a shade ring. They are a threaded bulb socket that screws into your existing socket that also has a shade ring so you can add shades to an pendant light.
