Are You A Morning Or Evening Bather?

last month
last modified: 29 days ago

Several recent comments on porkchop's post about fixing yourself up made me think about this:

Do you prefer to bathe/shower when you get up or before you go to bed? I shower in the evening because like to go to bed clean, and so I don't want to wear my PJs all day, since I want them to stay relatively clean too.

So which are you - earlybird or nightowl bather?

I shower every morning. Year round.

If I do something extra sweaty during the day, I will shower again when I am done. I don’t often shower right before bed.

In the winter, I bath whenever the mood strikes me. I love reading in the tub. Or just soaking. I seldom take a bath in the summer, though.

    I don’t own PJs. 😳

Evening. I run around all day, plus the barn several day a week. I like going to bed clean. Plus the days I put on fresh clean sheets are bonus for sleeping well. If I'm home all day or did very little I sometimes skip a shower but I always wash my feet, hands and forearms well if I do that. I live in flip flops when I'm not in boots and I can't bear the thought of getting into bed with dirty feet even if it's not visible. I sleep in oversized t shirts. A fresh one each night.

I mostly shower in the evening as I like to go to bed clean, but sometimes I shower in the morning, too, especially in the summer as I tend to overheat while I'm sleeping. If I take a bath, it will be in the evening after I shower, for extra relaxation. I use the bath more to soak, so I want to be clean before I get in the bath.

@wildchild2x2, I agree about the extra special feeling on nights when my freshly showered body gets into a bed made with clean sheets. If I didn't feel wasteful overusing natural resources, I would sleep on clean sheets every night.

I've lived in this house for 43 years and have never taken a shower. I take a bubble bath every evening with the latest book I'm reading. I have a selection of Teals bubble baths.

I shower every morning - I only have a shower before bed if it's really hot outside. Haven't used a bathtub in years - that's a personal preference, not a judgement, btw.

I read somewhere that older folks should only bath or shower every second day. Fragile skin, and all that. No way I'm not having my daily shower, though I do try to keep it fairly short.

I'll do either, morning or evening depending on what I'm doing, sometimes both in one day.

Always, always shower. I tried taking a bath years ago in epsom salts, supposed to be relaxing. I was so bored. I kept yelling at hubby how long I've been in there, and he said 5 minutes, 8 minutes, etc. It was so funny.

Ever since I've been alone I've been switching the side of the bed I sleep on. Queen size. One side one week, then the following week put my pillows on the other side and sleep on that one. I only need to wash my sheets every two weeks. It does feel good, just getting in that clean side, and of course having the whole bed changed is bliss.

I used to be whenever. Then my allergist told me to shower before bed, especially if I spent any time outdoors. She said everything floating in the air is on your clothes and skin and hair. If you go to bed without showering now it's on your pillow and sheets.

We have lived in this house for 36 years and I've only ever taken one bath here. Right after we moved in, doing all the unpacking and moving stuff with 2 young kids, DH filled the tub, put a glass of wine on the edge and said relax. I think I sat in it 5 minutes lol.

Growing up, living with several people who take your bath/shower when the room is not occupied! I found having longer hair it was fastest to shower evenings. Actually now that I don't have longer hair I still prefer to let my hair air dry vs a blow-comb. I do enough to it I don't need that added to the routine.

Evening shower always. We have three showers and two tubs in this house, one of which is a jacuzzi that I’ve used one time in 8 years.

It used to be a regular morning thing. But since I retired? Not so much. Now it's more a function of when I leave the house. If I have a meeting in the am or a get together in the afternoon or a dinner or show in the evening, I usually shower before I leave. In the summer, it may be more than once if I've been working outside or extra sweaty. In the winter, it's usually only every other day as my skin already gets so dry. But my hair I wash or rinse daily.

Annie, same. Before retirement i always showered in the morning and again at night before bed. Now I don’t shower in the morning if i’m going ourside to work in my gardens or headed to Pilates or weight training. I’ll just refresh my hair with dry shampoo or a refresh spray if needed and go. In past years when I was doing a lot of running, I’d take a shower after the run. If I (or we) have something to attend later in the day, it’s another shower beforehand. I have often taken 3 showers in one day, depending on what was I was doing.

For me, baths are for relaxation and showers are for cleaning and washing hair.

    Showers: Evenings

Baths: Morning or evening, depending on the day; sometimes both in the same day. (I.LOVE.BATHS)

    Fun bathing facts

back in the day people bathed for health reasons. Sitting in a tub of water was for your health hence the possible quote from Elizabeth I that she only bathed about once a year. Showering was a mental health thing. They dumped cold water on your head from a height to shock your system in the 18th and 19th century, It was a potentially fatal process. People in the past washed instead, using shallow pans of water. Elizabeth I spent a fortune on fancy soap and linens for washing.

I shower in the Evening. Since I dont do much these days I might wash instead of shower most days as my skin is very fragile. When I was a kid we would go to my grannie's farm in the summer and ran around in the dirt all day. We washed our feet every night in pans of water with soap before we went to bed.

I might add that even though I have never taken a shower in this house we've lived in for the whole 43 years, when we travel, I always shower because it grosses me out if there is a tub available, thinking of all the naked people sitting there before me.

No set time since I'm retired - it depends on what I'm doing and what I'm planning to do. Occasionally mornings, sometimes afternoons, more often in the evening, because I find a hot shower before bed can help me sleep.

Not a bath fan myself - I can't even recall the last time I took one - and I'd put a clean washcloth/towel down to sit on 😁

I learned a little saying about keeping clean when you can't or don't want to bathe fully: just clean your 'pits, piggies and privates' 😏

A single crumb in my bed will drive me crazy - like the princess and the pea 😄

I don't fully wake up until I've had water pouring over me. Even on days I don't shampoo my hair, I always stand under the shower and get it wet. I used to be a fairly advernturious traveler, but I never liked "roughing it" without a hot shower.

I take a bath EVERY night before I go to bed. I cannot imagine going to bed feeling sticky. The only time that I take a shower at night is if we are on vacation. and a tub is not available. I wash my hair every morning by leaning over the bathtub. I am very much a creature of habit. I lay my clothes out before going to bed. I put on fresh clothes every morning.

For most of my life I took a bath or shower in the evening. As a kid we had a shared bathroom for 6 kids, 3 girls and 3 boys. The girls took baths and night and had a vanity with a sink in the girls bedroom to use in the morning for brushing teeth and washing our face. The boys took showers in the morning.

That routine changed to getting a shower or bath in the evening. For most of my adult life I worked with animals and/or owned horses. When I got home after holding 150 dogs or cats or cleaning the corral or riding I was generally too dirty to sit on my furniture, so it was time to get a bath or shower, change into PJs and make dinner.

I just retired 6 weeks ago so I don't know how this new phase of life may change my routine.

Since I spend most of the day working outside I'll shower just before dinner time, but if it's an extremely busy day of garden chores I'll use the 10 jet jaccuzi tub to work out the kinks.

Yeah - I work with kids in a recreation setting mostly doing arts & crafts, and sometimes outside getting dirty and sweaty, so there's no way I'm going to bed like that!

My mother refuses to shower, requires a tub bath every evening. My sister who moved in with her last year (dad died in 2022) has remarked that a tub bath is "sitting in your own filth." Mom is in her mid 80s, isn't all that much filthy by my reckoning, leastwise not from strenous activity. I imagine the daily tub bath is a relaxation thing.

    carolb_w_fl_coastal_9/10 thanked dadoes
  • 28 days ago

The concern for me, dadoes would be the chances of slipping/falling getting in and out of the tub.

Grab bars were installed during the whole-house renovation in preparation for sister's relocation. The house has three full baths, the other two are shower stalls (also with grab bars). Mom argues she could slip/fall in the showers just as well as in/out of the tub.

I shower every morning before getting dressed. If I get sweaty later in the day (as with after exercising or a gym visit), I'll take another. I live in a mild weather area, temps are comfortable and not humid so other than on the hotest of days, one doesn't get hot and sweaty from normal daily activities.

I can't remember the last time I took a bath. I don't go in hot tubs either, I don't find the sensation of being in hot water comfortable.

I shower before bed. That could be early in the morning or at night depending on if I am working or not. But I cannot sleep well if I am not showered. I am very active and sweat everyday, I cannot fathom getting into my nice clean bed without washing my hair and everything else and just, wallowing in the filth. yuck. If I am working, when I get up in the afternoon, I take a little "half shower." That is, just jump in for a quick refresh, and that dampens my hair JUST enough for me to blow dry it straight and neat.

I do not like baths. Or the idea of them. I do not think one can get truly clean in a bath.

Baths are as dirty as you make them! Shower before or after if you are grimy. Definitely a handheld shower.

.Fill a tub with warm/hot water, get the room steamy ,open the window, turn on the jets, recline in the tub, and relax. Ahhhh. 🛀

eta No hotel baths for me, though.

Dirty water? Maybe if you were a construction worker or a farmer. I'm very clean and really don't need a bath every day. My water is clear as a bell when I'm done, and I have mounds of bubbles that also leave the tub squeaky clean-looking.

    Thinking more on this….

I shower upstairs to get really clean, using a handheld adjustable sprayer for the under carriage. Quick!

I shower in the downstairs shower if I’m worn out and need a spot to sit down. Semi-quick and relaxing.

The bathtub for total relaxation. Slow and easy.

They say it’s next to godliness. 🤷‍♀️however it is done.

The second home we bought not quite 10 years ago has a large jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom. Neither my wife nor I have ever used it, not even once. It's been used for bathing visiting little grandkids not yet old enough to shower.

I have to remember to turn on the tub spigot every few months to keep the drain trap full and the valves functioning.
