They look completely different. You have a design choice to make.

So this is Cedar Impressions. The vinyl has more texture on the face than can be provided with the cement shingles from Hardie.

Hardie Shingles Below The texture is provided by the appearance of the individual shingles rather than the face of the shingles. You might want to read this article as to why they selected the Hardie Shingles.

Real Shingles Neither of your choices have the appearance provided by real cedar shakes.

I think it is a good idea to keep exterior finishes to a min. Post pics here of the house and the choices then we have some context.

Beverly, thank you kindly for the images and informative detail re cedar impressions and hardie shingles.Real cedar is not being considered due to the high maintenance required. I appreciate your thoughts however it still seems to be a difficult choice between the two.
As our home is a tall 2 story we feel the 7” is a better scale for three sides. Our preference is to emphasize texture and dimension that would complement a full off white rock face (with scattered grey chip sparkles)brick front. The color of the brick is very close to Snow in Cedar Impressions and Arctic in Hardie shingles.

The brick on the front of our home is remaining (described in previous comment). We would like to choose a low maintenance material for the rear and 2 sides that would compliment the front and elevate the total facade while providing great curb appeal to both sides and half of the rear visible from the street.
