Darlington Rose from April & Ashley

Last year, I bought a bunch of roses from April & Ashley late Fall, and somehow one of them was left behind in one of the barns and didn't make it into the ground. My father passed away shortly after the roses arrived, and it was pure chaos in my life. The left-behind rose was Darlington, and it survived all winter in a small plastic nursery pot with no attention.


Most florist roses are not particularly hardy or disease-resistant. But Darlington is a little survivor. It is the most beautiful hue of cream with a hint of light pink and has been extremely hardy in my garden. I loved it so much that I ordered a couple more this year. This was the bloom I found on it in March, after I found it abandoned near a compost pile, where it had been left all winter in the pot. In a way, it has become my symbol of survival, of overcoming grief, and of the fact that there are rainbows after storms in our lives. The blooms in person have more of a cream color, but this photo was taken during a vivid sunset.

    I bought roses from Heirloom, Rose Farm, David Austin, April and Ashley and Edmunds last year. The only vendor I had an issue with was Edmunds. The bare roots got lost in the mail and they came to me so dried out half died. I bought them on sale so they refused to give me a refund.

    Grace Rose Farm's potted roses have been good quality but they are super pricey. April and Ashley are more affordable but most are grafted. I have had good luck with Heirloom but they are smaller and they don't have the rare varieties of April and Ashley. I have also have good luck with David Austin but they shatter more quickly than the florist varieties.

    They had a promo to share your stories about your roses. But this is a true story about Darlington. Many of my other florist roses did not survive this harsh winter.
