Not necessarily. Check viability by gently scraping the surface of the rhizome or roots. The tissue should look light colored and somewhat moist. If it is, rehydrate the rhizome in a bucket of water overnight, then plant in moist potting soil. Make sure the rhizome is aligned in the pot horizontally with the eyes or growing points facing up. Keep somewhere warm, in bright light and keep moist. It should sprout but doubt it will produce a lot of growth this season.

If the tissue of the rhizome and roots is brown, very dry and fiberous, then the chances of revival are low.

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) The skin of the rhizome looked wrinkled, and the entire rhizome had very little weight. It did feel fully dehydrated. I will make the heroic attempt at recovery, but I do feel that this is not something that should have been sold.
