Your guy 'Quietness' is a hit here already, Moses. I just got an own-root band of it in May and it's already sprouted 3 basals, doubled in height to over 2', and given me at least 6 lovely, fragrant blooms, with more buds yet to bloom. Wow!

Quietness is geat: black spot fighter, repeats quickly, lovely bloom, moderately fragrant (to me, but others say strongly), and winter hardy to its tips. It will get some late season black spot, in September, but it is light and of no significance, IMHO. Quietness does have one flaw, the blooms are not long lived. Petal drop comes too quickly, but the blooms never wilt or fry in intense heat. The bush form is graceful, too.

Like everything so much variation. Delish has been removed from my garden and my friend’s garden this year for complete defoliation, it was saved from the garbage by another friend who sprays. Quick silver defoliates here at least 50%, it is not in my new garden. Moonlight romántica is half covered with blackspot in my garden right now, but it is brand new so I will give it another year. Delta Gamma is spotless.

With our level of blackspot I think we need to just keep testing them in our own gardens because there is no guarantees.

Here, a lot of roses (including DeeLish) recently experienced defoliation from spider mites - a combo of me not venturing into the garden much to eyeball the foliage during really hot, dry (but humid) weather, and preceeding root uptake of a neonic. Black spot not a big issue, though.

I've found spider mites to be a plague at times, much less so if I keep up an aggressive overhead watering program, especially during hot, dry, high humidity summer weather. This I do in the evening to maximize water evaporative loss and provide prolonged moist foliage to suppress the mites who hate wet foliage. Of course black spot becomes rampant under such conditions when foliage is wet overnight, hence the need for me to grow rock solid, tough roses with excellent black spot resistance.

I have found Tetrasan 5 wdg a powerful miticide. It's a granule/dry power that comes in several packets per package. That way freshness is maintained. It is a translaminar systemic only, does not kill adults, only nymphs and eggs laid, but renders female mites unable to produce viable eggs, so the population of mites crashes soon enough. Reapplication is not recommended until at least 2 weeks after the first treatment. Only two sprayings per season are recommended, too. You only need to spray the leaf surface....a great advantage. It's translaminar on the leaves.

The dosage rate is .08 oz. to .16 oz./gallon water (8-16 oz./100 gallons water), that's about .5 to 1 teaspoon per gallon of water, or so. With heavy infestations, a nudge up in dosage seems OK.

I've been using Tetrasan 5 wdg for many years, but not every consecutive year. I like its ease of application, short duration (sprayed only twice a season... early July and again in early August or a bit sooner....that's it). It is pricey, but my original purchase seems still to be working well many years later.

Yes Moses from blackspot, sorry I should have specified. Spidermites are such a rare problem here they do not cause me much trouble unless we experience a very prolonged drought. All my watering is done with overhead sprinklers and I think it really helps with the spider mites.

That's a shame, Dianela. Sorry for the turn of events with your Dee-Lish bushes. What are you planning to replace them with? Peach Melba? Madame Anisette?

Have you looked into growing the Ping Lim rose, True Gratitude, as a tall shrub instead of as a climber? I'm giving it a try as a tall shrub. It all depends if it wants to grow incredibly long canes, especially basals, but also laterals, and only bloom at their very tips.

This is what my Quick Silver is doing as I am trying to grow it as a shrub. It makes 5'+ growth, which takes forever to eventually bloom. I think its days are numbered here. However, its blooms are cast iron durable, quite large, often to 5", and lovely. They make a statement.

Moses my plan id to probaby replace them with Fiji. Perfect 4 to 5 feet tall plant with minimal prunning, zero winter die back here but no idea jn your cooler zone. Huge upright blooms and spotless foliage. Her one flaw is the lack of scent.

Have not grown any Ping Lim roses yet, I regret not grabbing the True Passion I saw ar lowes a few months back.

My one and only Fiji, own root from J&P is a real gem. No black spot, no winter die-back, nothing but beautiful blooms that just keep on coming.
