Here’s looking at you, kid!

Pareidolia is the psychological phenomenon where your brain perceives familiar patterns—most commonly faces—in random, vague, or inanimate objects.

I have a throw rug in my mudroom that has a pattern that looks like a St. Bernard dog, and a Viking.

My husband can’t see them. 🤷‍♀️

What’s looking at you in your house?

    I see both!

    Woof woof, I see it.

Interesting to know there's a word for the phenomenon. I often see faces in cloud patterns and sometimes in fluffy, non-dense leaf canopies of trees. When the sky in the background can provide a lighter color to highlight the perceived pattern.

Forearmed with your viking and dog, I can see them in that rug. The only thing I have looking at me in my house is my actual dog! lol

    Right away!

The floor in our guest bathroom has lots of things going on…several dogs, including one with a bird pecking its head. There’s also Elvis, Abe Lincoln, an angry man raising his arm, cat and an old lady. Seems I just continue to discover things.

Not very much where we live now, but most of my life has been living with terrazzo floors and textured plaster walls, so I've been seeing faces and many other things in those as far back as I can recall.

I once had an Ob/Gyn provider who had a tapestry hanging in the waiting room. It was abstract images, and one looked a whole lot like the external body part in question....at least to me. I always wanted to ask reception about it, but was afraid they'd give me a blank expression. 😄

Oh, Ally De, I hear you!

In the kitchen window, I have salt and pepper shakers, and a pepper mill that I use for quick use at the counter. They always remind me of something but no one else has ever mentioned it to me. Am I the only one who sees something?

    Roxsolid....

    🤣

I also see Sherry's fish (looks like a Pike), and your dog and Viking. I also see ET, but he needs to be surrounded by stuffed animals... 😄

Yes, I see a jackfish in Sherry’s post, too.

Seems that once you see the image you cannot unsee it. I have 4 of these little gremlin guys in my large rug. One at each corner. I do see the happy dog & fierce norseman in your rug. I also now can’t unsee what’s in your kitchen window. 😉

We have a stone surround behind our wood stove which we topped with hand-hewn beams from the old house, c. 1790. The beams had holes and pegs to hold them together, one of which the carpenter used on the end. It wasn't until we turned on the light for the first time we found the man in the mantel.

I also have subtle swirls in my bathroom floor tile and I do see a cherub in one.

At dancing, they have a natural wood floor and in the graining, I see an ET watching me dance with the big slanted eyes and the overly large head.

I think it’s fascinating, that people see (or don’t see) different things. I see everything mentioned.

    What do you see here?

I had to take this photo just now, excuse the flash. (Can’t sleep,

I didn’t want to put the light on to wake my husband)

I’m not going to say what I see, yet. It’s titled, but that doesn’t really help.

Usually it’s one of three interpretations. Children usually all agree on one.

I see everything mentioned. In Michele's, I see an old buzzard or bird with a white beak, looking to the left.

I once painted a powder room with a faux finish with a rag. There were numerous images in there, the most obvious was the head of a horse.

    Michele, I see a cat.

I see a cat, a foot/ankle, and there is something else that will come to me if someone else says it.

    This is fun. 😄

LOL pretty funny comments. The marbling in my bathroom floor always gives me entertainment. I don't take my phone in there anymore. ITKYK. Sometimes there is a dog head, sometimes not. It cant disappear, am I just more "creative" sometimes?

I was thinking about this theme about a month ago. It’s always fun to see faces in patterns or textures. Of course now I cnnot locate any of my hidden face photos.

I grew up in a house with knotty pine in a couple of the rooms. Frequently on Sundays, my parents wanted time out so insisted on nap time for everyone. I seldom napped, but when not reading would look for faces or animals in the knotty pine. We also had a wide view of the sky.

You folks seem more imaginative! Fun!

Petalique, i used to have a knotty pine den. There were so many faces in that wood.

This is the upholstery on one of my chairs. Its always looked like Space Invaders from the game. Either that or mushroom clouds.

Every kid has said some sort of animal. Adults who see animals must be young at heart I guess. 😉

Some people have said a boat in rough seas. I see a house up on a cliff, all lit up at night 🤷‍♀️

    It’s titled ”Root”.

    Great topic Roxsolid.

The Christmas street lights in my city looked like a diagram of the female reproductive organs. DD saw it immediately when she visited. DH never saw it and couldn't even when it was explained.

I have to admit though, when we were in Arches NP, they suggested looking for animals in the stone formations...a lion, an elephant... but I kept seeing a certain part of the male anatomy!!! Freud anyone? Reminds me of the old joke about the psychiatrist showing his patient ink blots and in each one he said something like...two dogs mating, two people having s*x, etc. The doctor said, "You seem to have an obsessions with s*x." And the patient replied, "Hey! You're the one with all the dirty pictures!"

😄 Annie, when we visited Fundy Bay I was told the same thing. I could see a bear sitting on a rock, but I also laughed at what he was looking at.

Haha Roc… I can see that, although I can’t see much in Michele‘s artwork. My initial impression of it was a pile of rocks so maybe I’m not far off if the title is root.

Rox - after looking at your first picture I realized I have a cousin of your Viking in my tribal rug. Although I really have no idea what my little creature resembles. It reminds me of a toy my brother had in the 1970'3 - a wind-up Mr Machine Robot. But that's a real stretch.

There's another creature in the rug - my grand daughters says it's a piggy puppy

    sitting on a box.

This is why eye witness is such junk. Any two people looking at any scene is having their brain fill in the spaces. None of us see the same thing. Ever.
