I'd definitely go with a lighter backsplash and simple. Also, simple pendant lights with glass shades all the brighten up the space. Would you consider replacing the hardware on the cabinets to brushed nickel or silver tone?

Most important is how long is the area where the pendants will go over and how high is the ceiling?

example of smaller scale pendants.... need ceiling height though. Many rods come in 6", 12" and longer... if on a cord they can be shortened in most cases to what you wish and same as with a chain.

Simple subway or linear tiles all in one color would work best with no decor in the backsplash.
