No offense, but what you have is ....'Weird", or you are needing to rotate the rug. Shrinking the rug, tricks your eye into shrinking the already poorly proportioned space.

Not rotating the rug… but I’ll think about the other. I still have the rug I just replaced so I can overlap them and see how it would feel.

We can't help those who dig heels in. Tape a perimeter around the planned furnishings and decide later.Rotating the rug, would HELP you to decide the issue. so up to y.o.u.

This is why we call it planning. or the look before you leap.

It's the method that avoids the extra work of returns, and the disappointments in result.

It's always "math first" no matter ten billion visuals online and just as many possibilities in selection.

Glad you can return the rug you just bought! I would hold off in buying a new rug until you've really figured the layout and purchased the other expensive pieces like new couch and chairs.

One thought, if you're having a contractor in to do some millwork for the fireplace wall, you could see about the costs of removing the raised hearth? That would gain you some much needed space. I think this can be done relatively inexpensively provided it is just decorative and that you can match or have some leftover flooring. I'd have the same contractor recess the frame tv box into the wall as well.

Be sure to check building codes before you decide to remove the hearth. Even if it's a gas fireplace, some of them do require a non-combustible surface of 12" from the glass.

^^ A FLUSH hearth still meets any fire code., you'd have to deal with the front face below the fire box and unfinished ?

Jan, I was referring to Meghan's comment, which seemed to suggest getting rid of the hearth all together. She mentioned matching flooring, which prompted my comment. Of course a flush hearth could work and might take up less visual space.

Depending on the age of your fireplace and what kind of order it is in, you may be better off replacing it? We just purchased a Valor one for about $7,00 CDN.

Nice! It looks so much better without the tv over the mantle and without the word "art". Can you move the couch back so it is only 30" from the wall? How does it feel?!

I can’t move the couch back any more because walking out of the kitchen already feels like ur gonna walk into the couch. But so far I am loving all of the changes!! Than you everyone. I wish that picture would work because I love it but I think it needs to be bigger and vertical or a mirror….

Did you give any thought to flipping it with 55 inch frame tv on wall between kitchen and dining room?

I did… that wall is only 59” wide including the trim so I think it would be too big for that wall. And then I couldn’t do a console to balance the right side because it’s the walkway. Also I like seeing the tv from the kitchen now haha.

I figured out how to put art on my current Samsung which is ultra thin so I am prob just gonna get a flush wall mount for it and maybe do a custom frame 👏. Saving money haha. It’s a nice tv from 2021… 60 inch

Ordered wall mount and going to make the frame for tv… suggestions for these spaces now?? I am thinking love the mirror to the wall by door and get a slim entry table… kinda like tree where I moved it but at a loss for the other wall where mirror is now… unless I move the console table back after I get a diff one for under tv

Perhaps the wetlands picture where the mirror is now and nothing under it… and then a mirror on fireplace mantle would be a good balance

That’s great you can use your current tv, but I’d make the picture significantly less bright so it is less screen saver like. I don’t think I’d bother framing it.

I wouldn’t add any decorating until you have the big pieces. And don’t put any furniture where you have the mirror as that adds to the crowded feeling of the space. Less is more here.

Are you going to look to redesigning the fireplace wall?
No mirror there, it won’t reflect anything worth reflecting. Art works for now.

I am thinking the hearth is not cosmetic tho due to the height of the fireplace… but I am going to redo the tile and add some white molding on the wall up to window tops at some point in the near future

I took the blinds off the lower windows….think it brings the whole window together instead of making the uppers look so harsh and horn like. Opinions?

Would this be too big?? If sitting on mantel it would go right to the top of windows…. And would leave about 8.25 inches of mantel space on each side. Can anyone figure out how to paste it into my pic above?

Yes it is new! It proved very hard to find a 10 foot wide rug so until I can do a custom one in the future it’s gotta be a 9x12
