Yes the sunflower blooms don't last a long time and do hang down if they are big. But they are such bright happy looking flowers while they last. Where my grandson lives there are fields and fields of sunflowers.

First I'll do today's Bingo word which is ROSE.

I actually went out to work on my raised bed garden yesterday but it sure was hot. Everything in my garden except the pepper plants seems to be surviving just great. I did trim some of the plants back. Filled up one fairly large plastic bag with trimmings and got the bed watered. I was able to pick some tomatoes and the plants are full of blossoms once again. The peppers had half dozen or so ready to pick but the plants look kind of done in. We will be getting some rain along with very hot weather so I will keep an eye on them. I suspect they will need to be pulled up later this week, but we'll see. The unbelievable thing was that the stems had grown to the size of a branch on a tree, way bigger than my thumb. Never saw peppers do anything like that before. The basil plants are huge as well as the lemon verbena. My yellow canna keeps blooming all the time. The rosemary is getting some light on it now so it should increase in size. Meanwhile getting a salad size cutting of lettuce every 2 days in my Aerograden. Not bad for indoor gardening and one raised bed outdoors and a few plants on my balcony. We are in for extreme heat again and humidity to go with it. Rain will be here at least some of the days coming up. Today it looked like a bad storm was rolling in but it just barely wet the ground.

Sharon has mailed her swap. That was quick. I had some birthday cards to make and am doing a patriotic swap so I've been busy catching up on those, the garden and general housework. Even with my smaller place, there seems to be no end to that.

Posting TWO BINGO words today. LILAC and PETRICHOR. My older daughter suggested the second word to me. Petrichor is the smell you notice right after a fresh rain.

Here's another word for our geography place game: Cinnamon.

I found out that NC has a community called Cinnamon Ridge.

We'll see what you come up with. The answer needs to be a city or town (or perhaps a geographic place like the original name from where the town developed). We have also beeen counting things like a feature you might find that is tourist worthy for someone visiting an area. I think Lemon Law which was mentioned by 2 members is the only one I have not counted so far. I think most states have them and not really related to a city or town name or something of geographic importance.

Still seems to be very busy here. Yesterday was just one thing after another and by late afternoon I was totally worn out. Hope you got to see the eclipse on TV or another way. They set up a broadcast in our movie theater of it being shown by a high powered telescope, but unfortunatley that was one of the things I didn't mnage to fit in yesterday.

Sharon....chuckle, chuckle....I found a donut place, CINNAMON CIDER DONUTS here in Southern CA.........it must not be very good as it is only given 2 stars. It is in Oak Glen in San Bernadino County, which is maybe an hour and a half away. It is Apple country....Cider country. Oh my, I have not been to Oak Glen in years.

Now I can not help myself. 2 stars on CINNAMON CIDER DONUTS gets my attention. There is one review and I am going to post it for ya all.

"I am not picky when it comes to spending money on sweets. But this?! Um... I am unsure why there is so much hype on this donut.
First of all, maybe because it was on weekend, parking in the lot is $10. My first no good sign.
Secindly, size of each donut is about 1.5 inches in diameter. Covered with sugar.
Thirdly, whoever is cooking, VERY SLOW.
Fourth, taste? Just go to any other donut shop but here. I would rather spend my money on Crispy Cream donuts then this place 100X!!!!! Oily... basically socked in hot temperature oil.
And... is there supposed to be apple taste? I am unsure but it's just a lump of dough.
If you are going to charge more than a dollar for this, then at least make it unforgettable donut taste. I would have my 3 year old to cook and would taste better than this!

Wow, that donut place and the review it received, would make you curious. They lost me when I heard they charge $10 for parking! Sounds like a tiny donut, too, more like a donut hole.

When I researched cinnamon and NC there were lots of cinnamin roll places noted in NC. I haven't tried any of them. But yes, Have had some great cinnamon rolls over the years.

The other cinnamon comments where great to read as well. I'm fascinated with what places are associated with words on the Bingo list. I'll add another early next week.

I went to check my garden this morning and picked some more tomatoes.I never thought the pepper plants would improve during all this heat, but they were standing upright and the leaves were looking so much better. Likely will still be picking some for at least another week or two. My basil is beautiful. I have several types growing. However, I don't use it for anything - just enjoy the plant iutself and the fragrance when I work in the garden.

Our Garden Club meeting this morning was very interesting.

The presentation was on pairing Rosemary, Sage, Basil, Mint, and Bay Leaf into delicious ice cream recipes.

We got to sample six different homemade ice creams.

They were all delicious.

No rain and triple digit temps here. Looks like it will continue thru August and maybe into September. We're trying to water enough to keep important stuff alive. I gave up on the beans.

Pepper plants still look good but still no peppers. This is the time of year that Central Market is roasting fresh Hatch peppers. They make and sell Hatch pepper everything and I love them, so I'm okay with peppers.

I'm still trying to keep three tomato plants alive hoping they will produce in the fall, but right now they look pitiful.

Ruth, your Garden Club sounds like fun! Very interesting herb ice cream flavors. I am always looking for good ways to use fresh herbs from the garden. Thanks for the mailout update!

It was very hot today and is suppose to be very hot again tomorrow. I pulled some pinto beans I was growing that was not doing good with this heat. It was my second planting to see if I could get another batch of beans but did not work out. I got about a pound and half in spring of pinto beans from the first crop. My peppers seem to be tolerating the heat. I transplanted indoors four small sprouts of my recently started dwarf tomatoes into individual containers as it was getting crowded in the one container it was in. I did plant Louisiana Long Green Eggplant in late spring that is just now starting to flower and is doing good in the hot weather. Looking forward to a Fall eggplant harvest!

Oh my Ruth, those ice cream flavors sound interesting to say the least.

Good morning! I pulled 2 more Bingo words today, then back to one a day for awhile. Today's words are: LEMON and ORIENTAL LILY.

As long as LEMON is on our mind, let's use LEMON to see if we can find a town or city in our state with the word LEMON.

I found LEMON SPRINGS here in NC. Lemon Springs is an unincorporated community located in the southern part of Lee County. The community derives its name from a natural spring in the area that was known for its clear, lemon-colored water. Now that's an interesting way to get a name for the community!

What unique ice cream flavors, Ruth. Your garden club sounds like fun. In September the senior center will have a plant exchange so I will dig up some of my shasta daisies to share. Always manage to find things to bring and maybe bad that I return home with some, too. Space is not plentiful here.

Here is a new BINGO word: WHEELBARROW. Has anyone planted in an old wheelbarrow? I never have, but I've seen some pictures where people do that or maybe plant in an old wagon or the basket of a bicycle.

The wheelbarrow/bicycle basket/wagons are popular here. I don't like container gardening so it's not my cup of tea, but they are cute. I also like the barrels cut in half, turned on the side and the flowers grow as if they are the water flowing out of the pot. Heidi

Heidi, I forgotten about the barrels and I've seen large pots or jugs on their side with flowers spilling out. So many creative ideas!

Now, for a picture of what Annie sent to me: Lip Balm right inline with good garden scents - mango, coconut & pear, etc. With the AC running so much I've definitely had some dry skin lately, lips included. Also a card that Annie made and lavender and mint seeds and some fabric bags that can be used to store herbs or make into a sachet. Thanks so much!

Jeanne, I sometimes see a wheelbarrow planter but have never tried one. I was going to put boots and a hat on an old one that we had but I believe hubby put it out in the trash before I could find old boots.

We will miss the windbreak of trees that have served for 50 years, since I was a kid. It's very expensive and such a bold difference. If I had a quarter for every car that drove by to see my yard...and they're still driving around (small town life). My dad is leading this project since he and mom built the house in 1977. It's stressful to have him at my house all the time so I went to his house (formerly my house) and planted flowers. Then the city said they were going to bore through/under the flowers by the street at his house for a new water main. Well, it is done and the flowers survived. There are 2 more projects to remove a fire hydrant and a water main so those sections will be disrupted, but that's good news for me!

I received happy mail from Ruth today! 🥳 She sent a yellow lemons and green watermelons decorated summer themed card for the shapes and scents of summer. She also sent wonderful summer seeds of Sugar Baby Watermelon, Lemon Drop Peppers, and Cherry Falls Tomatoes! All look tasty! Love everything 🥰 I definitely want to plant the Cherry Falls tomatoes in a hanging basket as pictured. I am always trying to make space for everything! Thank you so much Ruth!

I love love love Sugar Baby Watermelons. That's the kind I always buy if available. Watermelon is probably my favorite fruit, so it was my first thought for summer shapes. I do have trouble getting any fruit I try to grow. Critters always decide to chew on it before it gets ripe.

And of course I love lemon everything. I have grown the Lemon Drop Peppers before and they did great.

The Cherry Falls tomatoes is the one that has been doing so good for Jeanne. I plan to try it next year.

Hope others who try Cherry Falls tomatoes have good luck. Mine are still growing and producing fruit. The only thing I notice is with less rain and more heat the skin on the outside gets thicker than it was earlier in the year. Never any disease or insects on the plants.

I've been busy with trying to get my apartment more in order, doctor's visits and procedures and then next week 3 days of computer classes. Trying to get some work done in my raised bed garden, too. I had deadheaded my daisies but the foliage wasn't looking great so now they are trimmed almost all the way down to the ground. I will dig some up for a plant swap in September and then I'll see the remaining ones bloom next year. Never a dull moment, it seems.

I am excited to grow the Cherry Falls this upcoming spring next year! I hope mine does as well as Jeanne did.

Next month for chat and pics sounds good to me if no one wants to host. 😊👍

My dwarf tomatoes are coming along. At the pace they are growing I will be able to transplant into the garden next month. Hopefully the heat will be a little better by then. I got two definite sprouts on my recently planted Orangelo Thyme and possibly more that I cannot say due to being small sprouts. I will try my luck again at growing garlic and plant some rounds in the Fall.

Annie, I am happy to share my Cherry Falls pack with you. I will only be using half the seeds and will save seeds again after harvest next year. I will drop an envie in the mail to you this week for it. You should get my earlier envie for the swap this week.

The luau today was so good. I came home tired after my class so I was certainly glad not to have to cook dinner. I had never been to any kind of luau before - so not a trip to Hawaii, but great nonetheless.

I have been reading up on herbs lately and learning their uses. Is anyone familiar with the herb yarrow? Have you grown it or know any old family uses for it? Looks like it makes pretty flowers. I think I will plant some!

Thought I would comment about strewing herbs. I found out about them when I prepared a talk about herbs several years ago.

Strewing herbs are certain kinds of plants that are scattered (strewn) over the floors of dwelling places and other buildings. Such plants usually have fragrant or astringent smells, and many also serve as insecticides or disinfectants. Their use was widespread in England during the Middle Ages through to the 18th century.

Can't say I've ever experienced a floor with strewing herbs but certainly a good idea long ago.

I think we have 7 words that haven't been pulled yet. I'll keep picking 2 each day.

From my list that I use to follow along with Bingo, I think those were the last 2 words waiting to be picked. Just so everyone knows I use a random number generator online to pick the words - I just list each word with a number here on my end to begin and then off I go each time with the computer doing its thing. The selections are random.

I just posted a heading for September: general discussion and photos with a bit of emphasis on preparing the garden for fall and winter, things we want to plant during those cooler/cold months, winter sowing and whatever else garden related that comes to mind. No swap and no game so come by to chat with us. No that I have the raised bed I can do more Fall-Winter gardening. I still have a few plants on my balcony and I try a few things out there. However, it doesn't get as much sun so I'm still learning what might be good choices for that area. Not much that I have out there will continue to grow over the winter, but many re-emerged in the spring for me last year.

Cherry Falls tomatoes are still producing. I have pulled out about half of the plants though at this point. The plants don't give up but the extreme heat and many dry spells cause the skin on the tomatoes to become tougher. I will definitely plant some again next year. I'll have to check on planting dates for the things I hope to plant for fall/winter. Growing here is different even from growing at my house in Cary.
