Feedback on redesign of entertainment room. Furniture placement

last month

I am

redesigning and purchasing new furniture for my entertainment room as it's seriously overdue. I realize right now what I have in there and you'll see that in the photos, is oversized and clutters the room up.
My new thought is to put a love seat on the wall with the small window to the right as you look into the room, on the opposite wall when you walk into the room on the left would be a very shallow console with a TV. On either side of the love seat about 3 ft away from the love seat wall would be a round chair I think they call them Cannon that swivels and has a foot rest. The love seat would be a wall hugging recliner but we really don't want to recline we really want the foot rest and maybe a slight recline. I think this would work and I think it would open up the room more but just curious as to others thoughts on this maybe something I haven't thought of. The room is 10 by 14. The loveseat would be in the 14 ft wall and TV on the other 14 foot wall. Here are photos pardon my mess! Looking straight into the room you are in the entryway so putting the TV and console there where the sofa currently sits. I think the plan I have creates a better set up for TV viewing and by replacing the sofa with two chairs I think should help with space. I know it's not great to have a window opposite the TV but we currently have the big window opposite it and is rarely an issue and should be less so with the small one.

You all have really helped me pull this together. The photos really help me "see" what is possible. Any thoughts on that entertainment center? I will be getting new end tables so no need to match what I have now though I love how simplynatural was able to encorporate what I already have into the photo. I think as I said I will start with the sofa and chairs and then get the other pieces as I go along and can afford them.

My Digby is 70" and because it has narrow arms like the Finley, it is extremely comfortable for two people. Not at all squished. There's even room to turn sideways to face each other to have a conversation. A swivel chair is a great idea for when there's another person in the room. A barrel swivel will have nice eased lines and feel like it's not too big in the room.

Emily and simplynatural what program did you use to create those sample rooms?

I used both chatgpt and gemini for this one, plus rugsdirect.com's rug visualizer to add the rug and Microsoft's Paint to add the art. The AIs (chatgpt and gemini) are good for making technically beautiful renderings, but left to their own devices their design choices are very "safe", homogenized, unimaginative, and they don't always interpret instructions very accurately. I like to choose my own rugs and art, at least, and sometimes other elements too. Then running the image through the AIs once more can smooth out any imperfections in my hand-editing and make the rendering pretty.

I have tried AI in the past and it could never get what I asked correct. I will try Gemini. Did you just put in the.dimentions I guess I need to learn how to use it to put in what I want. Thanks again! I am looking at a 70 inch recliner at West elm. They are hard to find.

  • last month

I don't tell it dimensions; I just upload the original photo (in this case, your first one), then tell it what changes I want. Sometimes it takes more than one pass to get it right, and sometimes it never does. I think you can upload multiple photos (of a room and of a sofa you're considering, for example) and tell it to put the sofa into the room, but I've only done one two-photo edit so far, so I don't know how it scales the sofa to the room.

As for finding a mid-sized recliner (in the 70-inch range), your idea of joining left- and right-arm recliner modules from a sectional seemed like a good one. Those modules are often around 36 inches each.

So as it turns out I cannot get what I want with the Finley so I think going with the Maxwell by flexsteel which is 69 inches. I moved things around in the room to see the modified space. You can see with the sofa that is there is 80 inches and too big for adding 2 chairs but with the smaller 69 inches I think it will be fine. I plan to get smaller end tables and tall lamp in corner also adding the curtains as was suggested. You can see the rug I had fills the space better with this set up so may mot need one much bigger. I did not put the rug under the furniture yet but will. I need to decide on chairs and plan to get longer entertainment stand.

Did you mean to post a photo?

  • last month

OMG yes! So sorry I was interrupted when I posted and forgot to go back

The loveseat will be a chair and to the right another chair. I measured and it should work. Thinking smaller side tables too. Should the chairs be the same? Would it look odd if they were different?

  • last month

For some reason the site is not accepting the photo.

I will try again tomorrow with a new photo

I think there must have been a software upgrade. I noticed a different format in the Stories section, and, from my phone, I cannot see what I am typing as I type it. The upside is that it is forcing me to review everything I post before sending. Anyway, that might explain your difficulty posting your photo.

Where the computer is I would put the other chair with a smaller

coffee table and the sofa is about 9 inches smaller

  • last month

What size is the rug you have there now - 5x 7? If so a 6 x 9 should be a good size.

  • last month

This is what the maxwell looks like it's very similar to this and the LS is 69 inches. I am thinking of this color as well. Can the two side chairs be different or should I

    keep them the same?

  • last month

Take the advice of a designer over mine, but whether or not a pair of chairs should match or not comes down to whether or not they will be used as a pair. I don't understand if you are placing them together side by side or on opposite ends of your loveseat/sofa.

  • last month

I want to add that currently matching furniture isn't "in", but I think a pair of matching chairs next to each other carries such an inviting feeling that they always will be a good thing, even if not "in". And to contradict myself, just because you "can" stuff two chairs into a space, doesn't mean you "should" stuff two chairs into a space. Before you buy, put two chairs you already own in that space. Live with it awhile. Take pictures with one chair vs two chairs. My understanding is that most of the time it will just be you and hubby on the sofa/loveseat. You will need chairs only when "company/family" comes. See how you feel about just bringing chairs in from another room for those occasions. I am doing something similar in my living room. When extra people visit, I'll borrow a couple chairs from the dining room.

If the chairs are different sizes, they can be different fabrics as long as they coordinate. Maybe one solid and one in a subtle print that brings in the colors of the sofa and the other chair.

  • last month

Thank you both for your thoughts. They will be one on each side of the sofa but one could be smaller like a barrel swivel and the other a more typical side chair. I don't feel they would be stuffed with the smaller sofa. I just wondered if two different styles would just look mismatched and "off". I know to not match is maybe an in thing but still needs to I don't know if the word is "intentional" ? I know people who just put things together that I would never think to put together of think would go with each other but they look great.. I tend to play it safe but that can be boring. I must admit just moving the furniture around in a different configuration makes it feel like a new room even with the old furniture.

  • last month

Just because a thing is in now doesn't mean it always will be. If you like a certain chair and two will fit nicely, I also would get two matching chairs. I don't see the harm at all. It gives you the option of placing them side by side someday.

You could do either two matching chairs (if their scale allows both to fit without making the room feel crowded), or two different chairs.

Some differences are more successful than others. I like this one:

The shared upholstery color relates them, but the clear differences in scale and form make the choices seem intentional rather than "close, but not quite". The lighter scale and open arms of the second chair keeps the room feeling open.

    Here's one I don't like:

Same color upholstery again, but having both fully upholstered makes the room seem more crowded, and to my eyes the shapes fight. Contemporary and traditional can mix, but in this case, the contemporary chair on the right seems out of sync with the rest of the room. If two of the right-side chair were used, that might work.

Simplynatural I agree I like the first one. The other seems too crowned. I think I gave up on a reclining LS or sofa. I did feel the 63 inch LS was a too small in the space but don't want anything over 75 inches and it's like finding a unicorn. There are larger LS with consoles but I don't want the home theatre or basement look. So now I am thinking just a regular sofa about 70 inches and i will get two poofs to put our feet up which we can move out of the way when not in use. I might look at kateinparadise's Digby as she said it was 70.

  • last month

I like the way the Digby sits. It's not too deep and it has a tight back. Everyone has a different idea of comfort though. It can't hurt to try.

@simplynatural that carpet is so inviting. Where did you source it? And I love the way you combined caramel and cream with the deep rust.

    This is the rug:

It's not cheap--but it's on sale at the moment, with free shipping as well. (Hurry, though; that's today only.)

  • last month

So I found a sofa that I like even better than Digby,it's Dillon by hydeline and it's 69 inches. So my compromise now is to put a recliner chair on the side by the window so need to find one that will compliment the sofa.mI like the idea you had of doing a cream fabric. I like the chair with wood arms you put on the right simplynatural where did you find that?

  • last month

Not sure I will buy from overstock but they had a photo

  • last month

I also found this and love the idea but might not fit with the loveseat style. This is what happens to me. I see things I like but they don't necessarily go together lol It come in caramel leather but also light grey which I thought was cream

  • last month

Was thinking of this where you had the ckair with the wood arms it's only 28 inches wide

  • last month

@simplynatural Thanks for the link for Barbara. And it's on sale! I think the rug brings the room to life with all the neutrals in it. It ties the wood tones to the cream walls and creates a focal point exactly where it is needed.

  • last month

I like the sofa but will the color work? It looks to be a reddish-brown leather. Maybe you can find someone that sells it where you can get a color sample.

I agree with Emily that the chairs can work with the sofa. (I like the blue, actually, if you want to go that direction with colors.)

Here is a floor plan for the room with the Dillon sofa and the blue recliners. (I looked up the dimensions.) It shows both rectangular and round tables by the sofa, so you can see which you like better.

Notice that the limitation regarding the chairs is not so much their width as their depth. They probably won't be able to recline much, if at all. As long as the footrests rise first, independent of the backs' tilt, occupants can still have their feet up. If you want the backs to move too, you could try turning the chairs a little straighter than shown and sliding them outward, so they could perhaps recline into the space between the tables and the side walls..

The blue line is a 5x7 rug, which fills the space between sofa and TV console exactly, but doesn't go under any furniture. The dashed line is a 6x9, as recommended by Emily. To my eyes, the 6x9 is better because the fronts of the seats are on it. People in the chairs have their feet on the rug rather than right on the edge of it. But that's your call.

And, for what it's worth, here's a floor plan for my illustration:

    This rug is an 8x10.

The smaller chair I showed (with the wood arms) was drawn in by AI; it's not an actual product. I did a very quick search for something similar, but didn't find anything as graceful. Maybe a more thorough search would find something better.

Thank you all so much so You think the blue might work? Interesting. The sofa comes in many colors and yes I can order a swatch. So you think keep both chairs the same? We went looking in an actual store today and my husband really liked this chair but not sure if this works with the Dillon and it only comes in the blue and a light brown leather but I may be able to get AI to find one similar in cream fabric. My only concern about the wood one which again I really like is how well it will hold up. Also the space by the window is bigger than the space opposite since that is where the entry is so might the wooden option seem too small for the area by the window where the loveseat is currently? I am open to the two same chairs though. I did do a search for side chairs with wood arms and that's where I found this one.. Sorry I do obsess. I am so afraid of making a mistake. Thank you for the renderings!

I can and may change the end tables. They are older and one has damage to the veneer on top but they are good Thomasville tables. Also will get new lamps eventually and love the idea of tall

one in the corner. BTW my H is 6 ft so likes the idea of resting his head when he falls asleep watching TV 😂

I guess I could do 2 blue but my walls are cream with yellow undertones so thought I needed to stay in the brown family.

Ok I found this one what do you thinki? It's similar to the other wood armed chair I posted in blue but this is cream and from what I have read better quality.. So I could do two of these or should I do a different one by the window. The thing is this is leather not fabric as it does not come in fabric will that throw things off. If I do the layout of the second rendering that simplynatural did then I think I need. swivel chair for the one by the window. Hang with me please I am almost there. Solid on the Dillon LS

I think the second rendering makes sense

But Would have a smaller end table on the left side of the sofa

Chat gptput this together using simplynatural suggestion of a cream chairs and one with wood arms I do like this. The only difference is the chair with the wood has a high back. How does the spacing feel?

    last modified: 28 days ago

If there was a chatgpt rendering (^), it didn't load.

I found this swivel recliner on Wayfair that could perhaps work for the window-side chair. I like the lower back than most recliners have (check that it would be comfortable for your six-footers, though). I do wish the arms were a little wider and the fabric had more texture. (It does in one of the photos.) I like that the swivel ring doesn't show much in this picture, but it shows more in others. It's so hard to tell online exactly what you're getting!

    https://www.wayfair.com/baby-kids/pdp/carters-by-davinci-ethan-swivel-recliner-in-performance-fabric-davv1093.html?piid=87681315

As far as the more open, wood-armed chair for the entry side, I like the shape of the blue one better than the tan one. The high back wouldn't be my preference, but if you want recliners, high backs are hard to avoid.

    Barbara McKeon thanked simplynatural

If these are chairs you sit in regularly, sitting in them before purchasing is a wise idea. Just looking at a chair online can be so deceiving when it comes to comfort.

This.is the rendering themat chat gpt did using simplynatural 's original. It shows a recliner by the window. If I can find a decent quality recliner that swivels I might do that and keep the low profile wood arm chair by the entryway. I agree try before you buy! My H is 6 ft and wants the recliner to be high enough for his head. It's the reason I am not going with a barrel chair. It was a compromise since we are not doing a recliner loveseat. I am trying to keep the high back down to a minimum

Barbara, has your H sat in chairs to know how high the back needs to be? I ask because my H has made a few declarations he later realized were gut reactions not based on experience or testing. But we had already spent the money and had to live with the mistake.

    Barbara McKeon thanked kl23

I have found that Pottery Barn has several stylish swivel recliners with high backs. If you have a store close by you may want to check them out.
