Our group is called FOTESS which stands for "Friends of the Eart Simple Swaps" and we do have the requirement that you apply to be a member. We have been a group on Houzz for quite a few years. Most months we have a swap - which we try to keep rather inexpensive to participate in ("Simple") and occasionally we have a month where we share information about our gardens or plans for what we might plant next.

This is a month without a swap. If anyone is a gardener and interested in participating in the group regularly, you can contact me (Jeanne) to find out about membership. My Houzz name is sandlapper_rose. In order for me to contact you here, you will need to have your screen name set up so that others can send a message to you through Houzz.

I live in North Carolina and our summer continues to have up and down temperatures. I have already purchased seeds for Fall-Winter gardening but depending on temperatures, we'll see what get planted when!

What are some things you like to plant in Fall-Winter? Do you do certain things to get you garden adjusted to Fall and colder temperatures arriving?

Sounds like fun, Heidi! You are creative.

Hope everyone had a good Labor Day Weekend. Just a quiet one here. I drove to a local barbecue place and picked up some yummy things for my lunch. Cooler weather the past few days so that was nice, too.

August game prizes are on their way and should arrive tomorrow.

    Just checking in.

102 here today. We've had 44 days of triple digit days so far this summer, and no rain to speak of.

Hard to think about planting any fall stuff. I do have some seeds I want to plant when our temps cool off some.

Ruth, your summer sounds worse than mine. Oh dear, I know you are ready to be out of that weather pattern.

I have my aerogarden to use and tried planting pansy seeds in it yesterday. The book I looked at said to keep them in the dark and they should sprout in 7-10 days. Have no idea how this will work in the aerograden and typically I don't have luck with pansy seeds so we'll see. I know it will be hard not to keep checking them every day and things usually sprout quickly in the aerograden. I may take a brief look over the weekend and cover them again assuming nothing has sprouted.

Hey everyone! Happy to see some checking in this month. It's been very hot here lately but it seems this week we do have some welcomed shattered showers possibly.

I noticed last week my potted heatless jalapeno plant was not looking good even though it was moist and mulched. I finally decided to pull the plant and found all the roots had been eaten by small snails! I did not expect that. Oh well, I did get a year and a half out of it. The long green eggplant is coming along nicely and has a handful of small eggplants on the plants.

Jeanne, that's great you have been using your aerogarden so much! Share pics later if you get some results.

Ruth, happy to hear you are already growing the white yarrow in your garden. Would love to see pics later when the yarrow is at its best. I am not sure what season that is!

Heidi, looking forward to seeing pics of your garden project!

    Some photos to share ......

Picked some paprika peppers today out the garden.

Louisiana Long Green Eggplant growing in the garden.

Honeynut butternut squash starting to grow. These are a lot smaller than the regular sized butternuts.

Some sweet potatoes we had started to sprout vines so I put them in water. Its way to early to plant these, not until spring. So will just see how it does till then! 😂

One last special photo for the day! An abandoned baby possum we found in the yard. We think she's so pretty.

This is my new flower garden. The top picture shows the layout better, but I replaced the taller edging with the short edging in the lower photo. I plan to line to the pathways with hostas.

In the top photo you see what's left of my previous flowerbed and now I'm trying to figure out what to do and how to do it. Heidi

Annie, we still have her! We named her Ginger. She lets me handle her and loves eating small pieces of sweet potato for a snack. We have been feeding her puppy soft canned food. She has already grown in size since we took her baby pic. Here's a pic of me bathing Ginger. She is the best smelling possum in Louisiana! 😂

Below is a pic of my recent seed planting of Mandarina Lemon Balm. The tiny plant is coming along. I have not noticed an orange smell yet, maybe it's just suppose to taste a citrus tone. I hope so, would make a nice tea.

Heidi, you are working on a big garden project! It's coming along nicely. Keep us updated. 😊

    Good morning everyone 😊 ☕

I wanted to give everyone a heads up Dollar General has the garden stuff 50% off right now! They had garden containers (plastic and ceramic ones) and small hanging baskets with lining at my store. I bought a nice small hanging basket for only $1.25. If you go, let us know what you got! 🥳

Hi Ginger! Wanna have a play date with my kitty Annie?

New garden project. Hostas are planted along the edging except where it will be full sun and in those places I have yarrow and coneflowers. I have always dreamed of looking out this window and seeing a sea of coneflowers, but it was always too shady. My friend gifted me "2" coneflower plants which turned out to be about 5 when I divided them. It's cool and wet here so all the transplants can have a calm relocation.

I got to the Dollar General sale! I bought spring flower bulbs and planted them. I've had luck in the past. For the 50% off prices, I'm taking the chance.

I have to do some research on brown-eyed susans. I have 3 kinds, but I'm not sure which are perennial or annual.

Heidi, happy to hear you were able to go to the Dollar General garden sale and picked up some spring bulbs! Let us know how they do later. Earlier in the year I saw at the DG they had onion bulbs in a bag there, my first time ever seeing something like that at DG. So I bought a bag to see how it does. It's stored in the refrigerator crisper drawer at the moment until it's time to plant. Happy to see the DG is offering more variety in the garden section!

Love the garden pic of your garden project! Thanks for sharing with us 😊 I would love to see pics of your yarrow later in the garden.

I'm watching an English mystery series. I have to rewind a lot to understand the British accent and because I'm looking at the flowers!

Nice to see some have been posting and your garden looks great, Heidi.

Annie, I'll look forward to seeing your October Swap.

And how cute to see Ginger! Years ago we took our Girl Scouts to a nature sanctuary type place and they had an adult oppossum that was tame and let all the girls pet it.

About a week ago I pulled up the last of my tomato plants and the one remaining pepper plant. The tomato plants were still producing. Maybe I said before, when the weather was really not, the skins on the tomatoes got tough. By then I had eaten enough cherry tomatoes anyway!

Meanwhile, indoors I never had any luck with the pansy seeds I planted. They were a year or two old so manybe they don't age well. I put in Swiss Chard seeds after that and they are growing well. I think at some point I'll take them out of the water and get them used to soil and then plant them in my raised bed garden. Although my balcony gets lots of sun in the summer, by fall it's only useful for dormant or shade loving plants.

Out in my raised bed I've planted the following seeds:

    • Bloody Dock
    • Spinach Merlo Nero
    • Autumn Giant Leeks
    • Ruby Red Swiss Chard
    • Robin Beets
    • Yellow Granex Onions
    • Lettuce Merveille Des Quatre Saisons

I still want to put in carrots, radishes, and dill.

I took a picture of my lemon verbena and basil that were still growing so well and how the bed looks now that it has been cleared of some plants and with bare places where the seeds are planted. I'll try to pull them up and add the pictures.
