Ai suggested paint color. What Ben Moore gray color would this be? Thx

last modified: 25 days ago

I asked Ai to put a light to med gray on my house that does not have lavender or bluish undertones (and that is not tan). This is what it gave me. I love this but when i asked ai to suggest names of similar colors, it gave me dark gray colors. would Storm, Thunder, or SeaGull Gray (all BM) look similar?

I did and it keeps giving me names of super dark paint colors- none look like this. I want a neutral gray thats not cold or too blue/silver/lavender…. this seems to be what im going for but looking for paint name suggestions if anyone’s put something similar on their exterior shingles.

The color in your photo looks like a warm gray. Is that what you want?

BM Wish that Jan mentioned looks nice and similar to your photo. Know that colors can really lighten up on the exterior.

I guess we can assume when the op posts an inspo, that is what she wants. The photo of what she keeps finding too dark......dd not post?

YOU WANT this - warm and not dark

All three I mentioned ( earlier post ) above are warm soft gray, NOT dark

You must test any you try on all four sides of the house, and in a large swath...........near the white of your trim, because your eye sees color by comparison : ) and especially against white. Then look at all times of the day.

If you find a few shades you like, look into their undertones and compare paint chips next to each other and be sure to test a few in large areas and look at during different times of the day. Your roof may also have an effect. https://nishthasadana.com/12-best-benjamin-moore-gray-paint-colors/?utm_source=Pinterest&utm_medium=organic

I see a stain on white cedar shingles. Going with a match for Revere Pewter.

AI is NOT a designer and nothing beats going on line and looking at houses in different colors which BTW is what AI does ,no magic just searches the internet faster than you can

Yes. The photo is my house after I asked Ai to paint the shingles according to what I was looking for. Now Im just trying to take this photo and get paint recs. Revere Pewter could be a good match - but I have that all over my house and it pulls a little green. I'll try it on my exterior and see how different it is outside in natural light.

AI is stuck in the same color space as the lamest, oldest color visualizer. We built our own AI to deal with it, but no matter what, color in online images is a process of elimination.

Look up Martha's Bedford Gray house. She has a collection with Fine Paints and it's include. But here's a list of colors from other brands that are similar. I included Revere P for reference.

If AI suggested you this color, then ask it what color is it.

That looks very close to the color of my house. Sherwin Williams has a matching program with Certainteed siding, and should have a color in their system called Sterling Gray, code is CT-214.

She did say, "I love this but when i asked ai to suggest names of similar colors, it gave me dark gray colors." And that's typical. Every single public AI model out there can keep the convo rolling but its input and insight about color is reconstructed from probabilistic language on every single turn in that conversation. So it looks reasonable... until all that very confidently delivered probabilistic guessing has to translate to in real life paint, materials and finishes. And then it implodes.

What's left is AI conjured pixels of color, displayed on an uncalibrated device, that will only ever exist in robot generated RGB world.

It reminds me of BM Pashmina.

As to Revere Pewter " But I have it all over my house"

What if your home was white on the exterior and white on the interior? The problem would be ...............what? : )

You could also try Ben Moore Gray Huskie (1473). I used it in a room where a cool blue gray was not wanted. It is very nice, warm and not dark.

AI is providing which colors to try based off of photos of exteriors of real houses - paint looks lighter on the exterior of a house - it can look much lighter depending on which direction the sun is hitting the house.

    BM Thunder:

BM Thunder on an exterior of real house:

Same house in the next two photos -

FYI - the house receives quite a bit of shade based upon comment under next photo:

    BM Sea Gull Gray:

Sea Gull Gray on the exterior of a real house - notice all the different colors depending on which part of the house you view:

BM Storm (not to be confused with BM Storm Cloud):

All of the paint colors provided by AI do look darker - however, they all are much lighter on the exterior of a real house.

Here are two examples showing how much lighter a paint color looks on the exterior of a real house:

The house below had shade across it when the photo was taken = the color looks more like the swatch below:

One paint color you might try that hasn't been mentioned in the above comments is SW Mindful Gray:

Another color you might want to look at - when the owner had the house painted, Capricorn by Frazee was used (darkened by 50%) - SW now owns Frazee (the owner said that SW has the code number to make the color if you want to test it):

The color in this photo of the house looks very similar to what you want for your home:

In the photo below - Capricorn (as mixed) is on the left side of the house. The owner wanted a darker color - however, she didn't like the one shown on the strip below Capricorn (she assumed that the strip shows the same shade - just darker - directly below the color you're viewing). So, she decided to have the paint store darken it (which doesn't always work either) - which is shown on the right side:

I also thought about BM Revere Pewter - but then I looked it up on an actual house and thought it might be too light for you?

    AI states SW Repose Gray

SW Repose Gray will be very light on an exterior. It has an LRV of 58. That's why I suggested SW Mindful Gray instead in my previous comment. I think Mindful Gray painted on an exterior surface will look more like Repose Gray does on interior walls.

Siding is Repose Gray - shutters are Dorian Gray - trim is Alabaster:

I just took a screenshot of the original post photo and did a Camera search on Google, got a few possibilities using AI but it will take sampling most definitely

research the gray tone paint and inquire with AI.

Get a whole bunch of paint chips to narrow down to 8 colors. Order those 8 colors in the larger Samplize sample. Narrow down to 3 colors and test those 3 with real paint on all side of the house.

Narrowing down my off-white exterior paint color ...

Will suggest you take your image to a Benjamin Moore paint store and try color matching chips for yourself or get the store manager to help you with matching to the image.

I suggest you NOT trust anything but a sampling on the house. Better to spend 500.00 sampling BIG areas, that repaint all four sides

This is NO as in c.o.o.l

Lori A. Sawaya: "AI is stuck in the same color space as the lamest, oldest color visualizer."

Google Banana Nano Ai can be accurate in rendering paint colors. One must carefully specify the surface to be painted and the paint (e.g., "Benjamin Moore OC-20 Pale Oak"). It may be more efficient to select paint colors from the website and then ask Ai to render them on the surface. Of course, one should test an actual sample.

    • Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray (SW 7015): A soft, universal light gray that shifts beautifully in daylight and features minimal undertones.

Great warm gray but will read very light on the exterior. Much lighter than what your inspo photo shows.
