Help Choosing a Warm White for Our Coastal Home

We are building a coastal home along 30A in Florida, and I would love some advice from those of you who have experience choosing exterior whites.

We selected Benjamin Moore White Dove about a year ago and have always envisioned a warm, creamy white exterior. Unfortunately, while we were waiting for our final construction plans to be completed so we could submit our full HOA application, the house next door submitted an application to repaint their home White Dove. Our HOA prefers adjacent homes not be the same color, but we are hoping they will still allow us to move forward. If not, we will need to explore other options.

Our house faces northeast, and our exterior doors will be Therma-Tru Barley, a warm, darker wood stain.

Our goal is a white that feels warm, creamy, bright and coastal, similar to White Dove. We don’t want anything that reads noticeably gray, dingy, too dark or stark/cool.

These are the whites/off-whites available to us between the HOA’s current and previous approved palettes:

  • Benjamin Moore White Dove
  • Benjamin Moore Simply White
  • Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee
  • Benjamin Moore Seapearl
  • Benjamin Moore Dove Wing
  • Sherwin-Williams Alabaster
  • Sherwin-Williams Pure White
  • Sherwin-Williams Oyster White
  • Sherwin-Williams White Flour
  • PPG Delicate White
  • PPG Garlic Clove

If White Dove isn’t an option, which of these would you choose for a northeast-facing coastal home with warm wood-stained doors?

I’d especially love to hear from anyone who has used one of these colors on an exterior in a coastal setting or on a northeast-facing home. Thanks in advance.

Great point! It’s is infuriating and we are spending a lot of money to NOT have our first choice. I’ll continue the fight.

Looks like you have at least 10 other whites to choose from? Hmmm ….

“Our goal is a white that feels warm, creamy, bright and coastal…”

Do test Alabaster. Pure White is neutral and nice but possibly too light/stark for exterior lighting. It can be surprising how these can lighten/brighten on the exterior. The BM Swiss Coffee we used on a previous home looked very white. Narrow it down to 3 or 4 and TEST.

You quantifiably do not have a problem. BenM Swiss Coffee might as well be White Dove when applied exterior. The quantifiable difference between the two is extremely small. You can compare factual color attributes outlined in pink.

BenM Swiss Coffee is comparable, you're not making any concessions with it.

However, I think they did you a favor; I would choose Oyster White out of the options available (outlined in orange). It has the most chroma (orange star). And that is what you want in that region. I specify color in Phoenix, similar intense sun situation. OW is the only white on that list worth testing IMO. We have done exteriors in BenM Swiss Coffee and it always shows up more white that homeowner expected because the chip and even the Samplize shows up warmer and creamier than the reality of painted exterior walls.

BM Cloud White isn't on your list of approved options, but I would same it.

    It's creamier and warmer.

It is cleaner than BM White Dove.

Thank you so much for this amazing guidance! Curious, is there a trim/column color that will complement Oyster White well?

Literally thousands of colors. Factors to consider are roof color, window, color and any fixed elements like stone, brick, pool decking or even pavers. Specific brand and HOA restrictions narrow the list from there

"White" exteriors are trending in FL right now. 7 to 10 years ago it was "gray", which looked ridiculous with many of the older faux-Mediterranean style homes in my area of FL.

Every new build or remodel in my neighborhood is painted "white", including mine! I ended up with BM Seapearl, because my neighbor went with SW Pure White.

The "whites" will look quite similar or different depending on orientation, other major exterior materials and landscaping.

I'm on the exterior color committee now and we haven't turned down a single color, even if the same as the neighbor! No one cares and we want to keep everyone happy as they invest a lot of money to update their homes. Makes a big difference when you get 6 normal people on the committee!

My Seapearl looks nothing like the chip color on your rendering. On the house it is much more yellow. You have to test several colors on all sides of the house. Get the larger Samplize samples to start.

And not that I would know anything about this ... but paint stores can sometimes put the "wrong" label on buckets of paint, so when the HOA comes around you can point to the label and say it is a different color from your neighbor! ;-)
