UPDATE: Guest room transition to trundle - know a good one?

last modified: 8 days ago

This small guest room has worked well with a queen bed, nightstands, dresser, chair. It's DGD's chosen room but DGS is out of a crib so this room will need 2 twins and they'll share for visits.

I'd love 2 permanent twins and a night stand but there isn't a way that I can see - closet door swing makes it too tight A trundle seems necessary. This is a very recent decision so have not shopped in person, only looked online a bit and that all looks like junk.

Does anyone here have a trundle set up they are happy with?

BTW, that dresser/chest is up for debate. It was my grandmother's, I wanted it for sentimental reasons but it's a beast and I'm this||close to letting it go for something else.

(who is it on the other board that always yells at people for not having a floor plan? 🤣)

Have you looked at Potter Barn Kids/Teens?

See if Bassett has trundles. I purchased two twins and one queen for our rental. Well made, sturdy and were not that expensive. IMO PB is overpriced.

Could you switch the closet doors to sliding doors, so the door swing isnt a problem? imlike the doors you have, though.

When DD was young, we had a trundle that was its own…unit? I don’t know what to call it. She had a regular mattress on a frame, with an iron headboard. The trundle slid under the main bed, on wheels.. I don’t know if that makes sense!

@dedtired I had wanted quality bifold doors, real wood and possibly louvered but was voted down. It may be revisited in the future. My experience with sliding closet doors is they are inconvenient for access.

@Allison0704 it doesn't look like Bassett has trundles. For the most part I agree about PB being overpriced for furniture but I've also had our solid ash bed from them for 20+ years and no complaints.

@chispa PB is one of the first places I looked. Initially I thought this corner unit would work but it would have to be pulled away from the window wall and not really in the corner.

West Elm has a few trundle choices that might work. I had really hoped for 2 twin vintage/used headboards to keep the cost down 😕

@Sueb20 I had something similar when I was young. I think what you mean is it wasn't a set but like buying separates. I haven't looked for that yet - off to see....

It’s a hi- riser! I one many years ago. They made fitted covers and bolsters so it was sofa like when the extra bed was stored underneath,

Have you considered putting the two twins on opposite walls? There is enough length to have them against the walls with a table for each on the window wall or maybe both beds on the window wall with the table between them.

We created a setup with a long midheight shelf unit as a headboard, and a bed with a popup trundle below. When we need the trundle, we just pull it out, and push both beds to the ends of the ”headboard”. The trundle can pop up to the height of the bed, and we can put a king matress pad and sheets on, or they can be separate with their own sheets.

@cyn427 (z. 7, N. VA) both beds with heads on the window wall would send my OCD into overdrive with an uncentered window and one bed partially blocking it! Not sure what you mean by "on opposite walls".

@bpath that sounds like a nice set up - does the pop up portion feel as stable as the bed?

This is the one from Article is the nicest looking so far.

I'm team switching closet doors for quality sliders and not having to set up and take down a trundle each visit.

Having sliding doors on the closet would make the room easier to set up for two twin beds - however, I have one guest room that has a long reach in closet with two full sized swing doors and it is so much nicer to use the closet with these doors vs. a slider (had one in college).

I've seen corner twin beds that can go all the way into the corner that would work nicely in your room.

If you go with a day bed and trundle, make sure it is one that will hold a thicker mattress + adjusts to a full height twin bed + is completely separate from the daybed. You may want/need to separate the beds more when they are sharing the room.

A daybed like the one below allows for 9.5" mattresses to be used for both the daybed and the pop up bed = both beds are comfortable.

I was surprised that the prices aren't very expensive (this one below was on sale for about $450 on Wayfair - based upon review, it's built well). There are TONS of styles. You also can purchase a daybed that you like + add a stand alone pop up trundle bed (as long as you double check measurements).

I like your grandmother's dresser/chest. I'd keep it. I have a bedroom armoire + a few other nice pieces of furniture that belonged to my Nana- I'll always find a place for them!

I thought this article from Elle had some good suggestions - I like the jenny lind bed with roll out trundle as it just seems classic, but its not inexpensive

I have pop up trundle beds in both my homes. No one has complained about sleeping on them, and the same guests keep returning, so it must be okay. The users have been kids, teens, and adults.

I dislike my painted metal daybed for multiple reason, but haven’t found a replacement yet. (But I only think about it just before and after guests so I haven’t looked very hard.)

It’s a pain the neck to make up the upper, daybed part. It’s hard to tuck in sheets and blankets against the back and foot.

The paint chips off the metal, and the metal has marked up the wall.

I dislike the thought of sleeping so confined and surrounded on three sides (and I’m not tall or wide). I feel badly expecting a guest to do it, but again, I haven’t heard any complaints. I guess they use the pop up part if they're like me.

I would love to replace the upper daybed for a plain frame that the trundle will still fit under.

The other trundle set up is just a frame and a pop-up, no headboard or footboard. That doesn't bother me but YMMV.

In one of the trundle bedrooms, I removed the sliding closet doors and hung curtains. That gave full access to that closet, and it added color and softness to the room. Your room looks too lovely and sophisticated for that, but I thought I’d mention it as an idea to riff on.

In conclusion, I’m of little help because I can’t suggest where to buy the beds. One was a hand-me-down from a sister, and I can’t recall where I bought the other 18 years ago. A three sided daybed limits placement in the room, and are harder to dress. Metal beds mark up walls. I did get the best mattresses that would still fit under the bed.

I'm not sure how a trundle will help as it will still block the closet when the bed is out, no? I'm thinking of something fun for the kids...this from wayfair.

Sliding doors are a no - not a change I would make. But as I said, quality, solid wood bi-folds I would consider.

@hhireno you've covered some of my concerns and it does help to hear your experience. About your bed marking the wall.... have you tried putting the sticky felt pads on the back side of the metal where it hits the wall? I have them on the backside of all my headboards and they work perfectly, unseen. It's the kind you usually put on the chairs to keep them from marking the floor.

@la_la Girl thanks for that article - lots of good info. The Jenny Lind is beautiful and looks well made.

@dani_m08 my brothers had corner beds where one slid under the shared corner table but I have not found one to buy and I don't dare throw yet another project at DH. My list is LONG! It still wouldn't work well for this room due to the window. I have scoured Wayfair but I'm being picky and prefer no visible fasteners. That alone ups the cost and is one reason I like the one from Article.

I'm going to re-think this. The wall space where the bed is now is 11' 1". The door swing intrudes 2' so let's call that 9 feet (108") for 2 twin beds and a nightstand between. Beds with headboards are probably 42", so 84" of the 108" leaving 24" for a night stand. Using a smaller night stand would give a few inches of breathing room and not have the bed farthest from the door shoved up against the window wall. It's tight but do-able - right? And if the closet doors change to bi-fold, that buys another foot. Maybe I can manage this without a trundle?

@Annie Deighnaugh I missed your post while I was cogitating! That is a cute bed. The only issue is I'm trying to think longer term and that would have a short shelf life.

If you can do the two twin beds, that would be best. I also went from queen to two twin beds, then they had a third child and I went to bunk beds. Now all are grown up and it has morphed into hubby’s junk room, no beds.

    DLM2000-GW thanked Sherry8aNorthAL

DLM, I hear you. But for $300 you could do it for the short term, especially since at some point I'm thinking neither you nor your DGD and DGS would want to be sharing a room.

    DLM2000-GW thanked Annie Deighnaugh

@Sherry8aNorthAL I'm probably safe on no 3rd child but never say never, right?!

@Annie Deighnaugh that's very true about cost vs timeframe - I'll have to consider. There's a 6 yr age gap and by the time DGD is reluctant to share with her brother, she'll be old enough to either sleep in the basement guest area (and might prefer it!) or sleep in the other main floor guest room and her parents sleep lower level. Right now they all want to be on the same floor. It's always musical beds when they're here because someone gets a cold and depending on who, sleep locations change sometimes nightly!

Do they need separate beds? At hotels the kids often share the queen bed with their sibling.

    DLM2000-GW thanked roarah

@roarah For a night or 2 it might be ok but because they live so far visits are usually 2 weeks 3x/yr.

When DD moved out of her crib we bought a white 'wrought iron' daybed with pop-up trundle for her room. I didn't have any issues with marks on the wall - the bed was heavy, on carpet and didn't move or shift. I didn't have a problem changing the sheets and blankets since I had room to reach from both ends of the bed. To simplify making the bed I bought a white eyelet comforter with matching bed skirt. The bed skirt went between the mattress and the top of the mattress support so it completely hid the metal trundle.

We put a large addition on the house and made a second en suite bedroom on the second floor for DD. Her old room became the guest room and we continued to use that daybed for another 20 years. The mattresses were upgraded and we often had adult guests sleep there. About 10 years ago DS took it to use in his DD's bedroom until he bought a set of bunks for the girls. The paint was still in pretty good shape considering how old it was. The only areas that chipped were where the metal daybed was pushed back unevenly and hit the side of the bed frame.

In our current home I am thinking about donating the double bed and art deco furniture in our small first floor guest room and adding a daybed with pop-up trundle. Or a Murphy bed is another possiblity. In the 9 years we've lived here the bed was only used when DH had Covid. There's another guest room on the second floor with a queen bed and full size bathroom and sitting room if we have guests.

I'm flunking out on getting a pic to save I have bought two of these bed frames from Am$%#@ and they are sturdy. They are a nice simple design and priced well. I have not purchased one with a headboard before. This headboard is also only 38 wide.

Our DD also had the white wrought iron twin with the pop-up trundle. We bought it at a local furniture store. I remember sleeping on the pop-up once in her room after her tonsillectomy. It was quite comfy. I didn’t find changing the sheets difficult, especially compared to our boys’ bunk beds which were a pita. I like the look of two twins better if you have the space.

"Do they need separate beds? At hotels the kids often share the queen bed with their sibling."

Oh man. My bro and I would *never* share a bed. On those rare few occasions when Dad would spring for a motel room, Mom and I share a bed and Dad and bro shared the other one. No way would they *ever* have let bro and I share a room, let alone a bed. They'd be afraid we'd kill each other before morn.

That's why I like the 2 separate beds at 2 separate levels so each has their own distinct space. I can also see the bunks where the lower is a double and the upper is a twin in case a parent has to bunk in with a child....as DLM implies there's all kinds of switcheroos going on each night for whatever reason. And as a kid, I'd think the upper was way cool.

@Annie Deighnaugh my DGD had a lofted bed a couple of years ago and liked it well enough - until she didn't! Decided it was too scary to be up there. This was not a bunk bed, there was a desk and storage beneath so she slept on her mattress on the floor quite a while till a new bed was purchased. And DGS is too young to be on a top bunk yet. The twin beds will do just fine!

@Jilly that last room - wow! Love the look of those headboards but I dunno about real life. I keep going back to look at each one for different reasons.

We have a pair of twin Wesley Allen pull out trundle beds—purchased for our lake house when we expected our grands to bring friends; they didn’t, so the trundles were seldom used. This pic is years’ old when we first moved in. The other bed sits parallel on the other side.

Our youngest had several sets up previously mentioned - corner table with twins, then moved to a daybed with trundle (heavy brushed nickel iron). No marks on the wall with either. Pulling out the trundle was not that easy with a rug in the room, and we did not pull the trundle up for guests.

I squeezed in a pair of twin beds and a very small bedside table in our rental cottage. All the bedrooms have bifold closet doors. The second twin is not shoved against the window wall, but it is just enough for housekeeping to change the sheets easily. It is tight, and twice I've seen the table moved next to the closets and the beds shoved closer together when children were there. It doesn't really give them room to play, so not sure why renters decided to do this. Bedroom is 13' x 9 '. We did not want to do a bunk bed due to liability, and room also works for adults without a bunk.

Saw this online earlier. Would you consider, if they fit, on window wall like this:

Then the closet doors would not need changing?

We have twins with headboards similar to deeinohio’s and a dresser in between in the guest room at our lake house. Thet’re only a couple of inches from the walls. I pull them out at an angle into the room to change the sheets.

@ljwrar I did consider that but the window is in the way - or rather the curtains and I'm not ready to part with them yet. To avoid the curtains the whole unit would need to be pulled out from the corner defeating part of the purpose.

    @deeinohio that's a cute bed look!

@Allison0704 if my window was centered I would consider that for sure. But having one headboard on the wall and the other againt the window - and not even balanced on the window - it would forever feel off kilter to me.

@porkandham I'm sure that's what I'll have to do with the bed closest to the wall - not a deal breaker.

Heading off to napland - DH succumbed to preschool germs as soon as we got home from our visit and has been sick ever since. I avoided it, sleeping in the other guest room the last week, but scratchy throat started last night and today it's all down hill.
