Comments (19)Hello pjmcintosh54, Marie Here. I am a Hunter Douglas Dealer, and there are videos on youtube for all the types of HD products. May I suggest you watch a couple of them to decide which ones best suit your design style, then call a local rep to come out a measure, as well as show you the various types of fabrics available. Truly a gorgeous product, it actually adds value to your home upon resale. Here is the weblink for Silhouettes, you want to also check out Pirouettes and Luminettes for your windows. Silhouettes are horizontal lines (squares of fabric), Pirouettes are most costly but have the same look as Silhouettes but give you the option of opening somewhat when vanes are lowered. Luminettes are vertical slats with overlay of sheers - very elegant look, open and close just like standard drapes. All are available on motorized and/or remote. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw32pG4ewkA&list=PLD54048B3A178FB55&index=10&feature=plpp_video...See MoreWindow coverings
Comments (7)Beautiful doors. Because of the way they open and their broad expanse, you will need to get window coverings that completely clear the doors. Cellular shades, accordion shades, and Roman shades might all work if mounted high enough to clear the doors. They'll need some sort of cornice to look really good instead of stop-gap. The doors do have an area above for mounting window treatments near the ceiling. For a job this big, I recommend consulting a window covering pro. Check your door manufacturer's website, too, for ideas that they know will work with their doors....See MoreNeed help with shallow (1/2 depth window) depth window treatment ideas
Comments (66)I bought Bali cellular blinds before I realized the windows in our latest home are very shallow. I've never bought a house with shallow windows, so I didn't know there was such a thing! When the blinds came in, I thought I had to return them. But then I was able to mount it anyway since the brackets that came with were L-shaped with 1 screw hole for the top and 2 for the back. So I was able to just put the 2 screws into the back of the L-brackets. Since the entire blinds was pretty light (it's 36" x 45"), the 2 brackets were enough to hold up the treatment. (Depth of the window. The treatment can only be mounted right inside the moulding. It looks pretty wide in the picture, but it's actually only about 3/4" wide.) (Side look of the cellular blinds.) (From the front, you can't tell it's protruding. This is in a bathroom, so it is always closed but provides tons of lights and privacy.) I have since ordered 2 Bali Roman shades. Since the roman shades are slightly heavier, I used 3 brackets instead of 2. Again, the brackets were only drilled using the 2 back screws of the brackets. (Here's how it looks from the side of the Roman Shades.) (Shades when down.) (Shades when up.) I bought all these Bali shades from blinds.lowes.com. My latest issue is, I just ordered 2 Bali roller shades for the office, after the success of the above blinds. I didn't realize Bali roller shades require 1 3/8" of mounting depth! And the brackets are not L-shape; they are flat and can only be mounted on the top, which I don't have the room. I don't want to do outside mount since it'll not look as good, plus I didn't order a long enough shades (I can return them, but then I really like roller shades in the office). I do like Tina Mizhir's idea so I may try that!...See MoreWindows painter shut and Need screens for 1924 windows
Comments (29)Don't replace the historic windows! I just restored all of the windows in my 1850 Gothic revival. I restored the windows back to their original operation and lined the interior side of the window tracks with flocking and felt. ( NO DRAFTS) All Still available. I made storm windows from poplar with Lexan inserts. Our house is 2500 square feet, 2 story and it has a 1956 Cousins and ferns Gas furnace that still operates great. I'm not on a budget and my largest heating bill for the past two years was 200.00. (north Central Ohio). In the day, A lot of windows got painted shut because it was easier. What takes one day to paint a bunch of windows would take three days if painted in the proper sequence. All of the windows can be opened, all can be restored. There is a sequence to open this type of window. I can help if you're interested. This picture was taken during restoration and I had just started on the bay windows. Vinyl or any replacement window just looks out of character. I cant believe people just blindly recommend replacing windows. Regards...See MoreHeather Merenda
