Is it just as inexpensive to use vertical siding vs horizontal siding?

We are building a Victorian home on Mackinac Island. My husband wants to use a combination of vertical and horizontal siding. It seems, in all the photos I see, that siding is normally placed horizontally. Is it cheaper that way?
