As the mother of 3 boys and 2 girls, all who love legos, I am inspired by this amazing storage solution! We love old homes, and have owned a 200 year old beauty with a similar "before" basement. Truly brilliant solutions to the limitations older homes can sometimes present, and great preservation of character!

Love your work the house is gorgeous! Rooms are classy, vibrant and fun, your home put a smile on my face. Such clever use of storage throughout, but the lego room is astounding. How have you sorted your lego, in sets?

With a husband and two boys who adore Lego I read this article with interest. First, kudos to the architect/owner - what beautiful design/colour and use of space! However, the title of the article led me to believe there would be more Lego incorporated throughout the house ... coming from a family of Lego maniacs, I was a bit disappointed (but still thrilled with the beauty of the home on its' own). We are only just finishing our own reno - our large basement which housed thousands of Lego pieces in neverending Ikea shelving and bins has now become a showpiece - I decided if I can't beat them, I would join them. We purchased beautiful glass display cases and the sets they work so hard to build can now be displayed as works of art (which they are) and not be just dust gatherers. We used a lot of glass and the colour from the Lego sets (and loose pieces also put into jars to act as book ends) really gives punch to the room. It is now a really cool place to have friends over (if you are 11 anyway!)This was a very timely article - can't wait to show my husband and boys.

Thank you for sharing. Do you have some photos of the actual Lego making areas as well? We constantly build, display and rebuild from it, the display needs to stay by the crime scene:-)

The "dining-room" table is for the larger build in place projects that take time - the smaller desk for any smaller Lego projects. My husband dismantles whatever isn't currently being played with or displayed (in the basement or our son's bedroom) and returns it to its original boxes. These are stored in a large Ikea shelving unit in our storage area (approx. 8' high by 6' wide) - then it is available to our son (or my hubby) whenever the urge strikes them to build something. And for playing with the Lego - we have that large carpeted area if my son wants to set up guys and make stop-motion videos with them.

I have saved this to return to and admire; what a fabulous space! It is a crafter's dream room. But I can't help but think about the dangerous, dangerous juxtaposition of a craft area and a bar. Drinking and crafting...there is a deep dark vortex in there from which one might never return...and from which one's friends might never leave...mimosas, anyone????

Describe a little more about the slide out storage compartments downstairs. It looks like the shelves are also lids to the storage bins. But after looking more closely I see a few bins are filled above what looks like the shelf. So I guess the bins are actually open. No lids. They slide into the grooves of the cabinet. Is this the custom built storage or IKEA?

Now I know what my grandson Michael may be when he grows up! At 5 and a half, he is a Lego fanatic! He builds the most amazing things! Thanks for sharing.

I love the Lego organization, but how do you organize so many Lego's? My 5 1/2 year old already has 40+ sets of Legos and I'm about ready to pull my hair out.

Hang in there, Mandieport! I have 2 boys, now 9 and 7. They still play Legos all the time. They have been getting Legos for every single birthdays and Christmas.. You can imagine "the collection" Our organization system still works pretty well. It took about 2 weeks to create that but it's well worth the investment. Building toys are awesome for kids and lifesaver for me when I work at home.

Hi, Bridget; It is 14 by 14 craft drawers which comes with 3 drawers. In the photo, I had 7(3 on top and 4 on the bottom) Now we have 9 drawers. Over time it grew more.. You can buy those drawers from Target or craft stores like Michael's or Joann fabrics. It is supposed to be for scrapbook paper. It is perfect for the Legos because each drawers actually come out easily to organize or find something. My boys are now 7 and 10 and they still love Legos! I also have a clear drawer divider(from Target) for some of the drawers to organize special pieces. Let me know if you have any other question! Happy new year!

i would like to build a similar wall unit for fabric storage. What I need to know is what do you use under the bottom shelf to raise it up off the floor? Is it a 2x4 frame? And do I need to put a back on it, or can I use the existing wall. If existing, then how do I attach it to the wall?

I'm interested in the wall unit too and would like to look into making them for my Lego room. I'm guessing the wood boards were bought then a table saw was used to cut the grooves and painted over with a semi-gloss paint?
